kernel 2.6.35.7-dockstar should be good

You are getting the compile errors because you need to edit the source files and comment out (use // ) the lines listed in step 4) " # comment out the Following lines ..." - dont just add them at the top of the file.

i.e. search for each line and prefix with //

        pScrn->racMemFlags = RAC_FB | RAC_COLORMAP | RAC_CURSOR | RAC_VIEWPORT;
	/* XXX Is this right? Can probably remove RAC_FB */
	pScrn->racIoFlags = RAC_FB | RAC_COLORMAP | RAC_CURSOR | RAC_VIEWPORT;

You can start with my xorg.conf but you'll probably need to tweak some of the settings for your monitor.
If all is good the screen should turn green when you boot the dockstar with the display attached. Then you need to start up X11. Currently there is no easy way to have it plug-n-play.

vncserver :0 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16

The commands in /etc/rc.local run as root so the config will come from /root/.vnc rather than a user home directory.

If you want to run the commands as a regular user you would need to do something like:

su user -c 'bash --login -c "vncserver :0 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16 > /tmp/vnc.log 2>&1"'

Change "user" to the username of your account. The first time you run it it might prompt for a password so make sure you set that up before you put it in /etc/rc.local

FYI - I picked up a DL-195 device (SainSonic UG19D1) that was going cheap. It works with my 1920x1200 monitor and a basic fluxbox display is quite functional and Midori can render complex webpages full screen without too many problems.

Unfortunately the dockstar's usb port cannot supply enough power to run the device directly which is a little disappointing as it has not problems driving the Doublesight DS-90U LED backlit monitor. A powered hub or Y-power cable is an easy fix though.
The dockstar can only just handle an X11 fluxbox desktop with a few xterms and maybe a low weight web browser (like Midori). It doesn't have enough memory or CPU speed for apps like caffeine. Even if the dockstar could to decode and render the signal fast enough I think there would be too much USB contention for it to work (the dockstar only has a single USB port - the other 3 ports are a hub).

Let us know how it goes
> any difference between the chipset and the DL-165 DL-195?

I think:
DL-165 supports various resolutions up to 1920x1080 - it is slightly older and probably has better driver support
DL-195 supports 1920x1200

No practical difference between VGA, DVI and HDMI - they all support the resolutions you require if your TV has inputs. VGA will degrade with longer cables and is (more) subject to electrical interference. HDMI is good for longer distances and can handle audio+video (but your displaylink adapter only support video).

You want a displaylink DL-195 or DL165 chipset. Its hard to tell from the ads which chipset each one has so you would be best to ask the seller what chipset the adapter has. Sometimes they put they misrepresent the cheaper knock off products by putting misleading chipset names in the title and calling it a "model number". If that is a displaylink device then its an okay price.

If I were buying one in the EU I would probably purchase one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Multiple-2048x1152-1920x1200-DisplayLink/dp/B0038P1TP4

The Linux Displaylink driver was written by Plugable: http://plugable.com/category/platform/linux/ so their products are the safest bet and you might be able to get some level of knowledgeable support.

If you buy a DL-195 device that support 1920x1200+ it will probably be useful for many years - probably long after you have moved on from your dockstar project. I would spend the extra $$$ rather than get a DL-165 or lower device.

Yes, those adapters should allow your dockstar to run X11 on your 42" 1080p HDTV.

A few things to consider:
- the Linux/Debian display link drivers only support 16bit color (you'll probably never notice though)
- the drivers & xorg.conf config can be non-trivial to set up the first time
- the dockstar's 128Mb memory limits X11 - you can have a usable fluxbox desktop but don't expect miracles
- the dockstar's CPU is not fast enough to display hi-definition video through the adapter

Its possible some of these might have SIS USB2VGA chipsets that would work under debian but there is no way of knowing, and if they did work the output will be slow and jumpy. Best to find a displaylink device - they should be easy to find. One with DL-195 chipset is probably best, although it may be overkill for an old LCD.
