I was wondering about the other Kirkwood device I Have. It is Iomega’s Ez Media & Backup Center.
I made several unsuccessful attemps to install newer kernel on it...

Here is the console boot output:

I can boot into Debian wheezy clean in USB stick! but not into newer kernel..... It boot with manufacturer provided kernel(zimage form) only. Kernel wouldn't boot and give message like "Bad Magic Number". well i tried to find proper arcnumber but my lack of knowledge, met with failure.
Any help info would be appreciated.

Berryshake,

Is your machine this one http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Media-Backup-Center-35541/dp/B007A2JNGS ?

From the boot log, it shows this is Soc: 88F6282 A1 CPU. It is not in the mainline, and I don't have a patch for it. It also does not show up in the arcNumber list yet. So if you can find a patch for this, then we go from there. Perhaps you can find the open source from Marvell website.

That product page says: "Dual core CPU at 1.3GHz with 128MB DDR3"

That's not a Kirkwood.

Marvell Armada, maybe. If those specs are right. ;-)
But the bootlogs indeed seem to indicate Kirkwood. Hmm...

It is Armada.

I think the spec is wrong. This machine equipped with single-core processor. Maybe the CPU is the same as the ZyXel's NSA325 on it.

I think it is more like the Topkick than the NSA325. Since you have serial console, you could try the Topkick arcNumber to see if it boots.

Yes I have sereial console.
As a Uboot noob I have a question. Current;y, this device only boots with zImage kernel. Its original Uboot environment said 'kernelimage=zimage' , so I had changed Uboot parameter like as below, to boot from USB stick...

bootcmd_usb=usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/zimage; bootm 0x40000

It only boot with zImage format Kernel, of course. So I converted Bodhi's uImage kernel to zImage whenever I tried.

How to boot from uImage Linux kernel?

.

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?
April 28, 2014 10:18PM
That's not necessarily true. You can boot with uImage and uInitrd if booting Debian kernel. So I would change the bootcmd_usb to either:

boot only with uImage
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; bootm 0x40000
or to boot with uInitrd
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000

As long as you don't save it with saveenv, it will be reverted back to orginial value upon reboot.

// Bodhi

Thank you for the great advice. I really appreciate it. I'll try to modify U-boot's environment variables.

hi

I have iomega ez and I used Kernel linux-4.10.9-kirkwood-tld-1 package with lenovo ix2-ng.dts

I used instruction on 4b to build uImage but no uInitrd because there is no initramfs-4.10.9-kirkwood-tld-1.

so I boot with uImage only by

setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; bootm 0x40000

here is my serial output, what should I do next?

What you should do is the create a new rootfs on USB:

Updated 20 Feb 2016:

This Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 is to keep in sync with kernel Linux-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1.

Basic minimal Debian Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

The Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 has everything you need. After booting into this 4.4 kernel successfully, you can then proceed to install linux-4.10.9-kirkwood-tld-1 package.

You can use the lenovo ix2-ng.dts. But you need to boot with uInitrd.

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sdb1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

here is another bootlog, I already have debian wheezy on usb so I just updated kernel.

I am not sure I am on right track.

Sure, you are right on doing this. Installing the new kernel on top your existing rootfs.

The next step is to ensure the USB rootfs will be mounted correctly (since there are SATA drives in the box).

1. Mount your USB rootfs on another Linux box and label it rootfs. Asuming it is mounted as sdb1

tune2fs -L rootfs /dev/sdb1
sync

2. plug the USB in the Iomega, power up, interrupt serial console, and

setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; setenv root=LABEL=rootfs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'

and then boot

boot

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sdb1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?
May 23, 2017 10:14AM
Let's try this:

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 rootfstype=ext2'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'
boot

iomega ez,

That did not make sense to me :)

Try:
setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end)'

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?
May 25, 2017 12:35AM
iomega ez,

Sorry I was too cryptic.

Let's try this to see if the root device will be mounted correctly (I added double quotes inside the bootargs).

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "$(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end)"'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'
run bootcmd_usb

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Try:

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $(bootargs_mtd) earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; printenv bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'
run bootcmd_usb

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?
May 25, 2017 03:51AM
Try:

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "$(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $(bootargs_mtd) earlyprintk=serial"'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; run make_usb_bootargs; printenv bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'
run bootcmd_usb

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?

I see. So this stock boot really does not understand double quotes.

Let's try to run it in baby steps

setenv bootargs '$(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $(bootargs_mtd) earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; printenv bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x1100000'
run bootcmd_usb
