the main reason to flash Debian (more like modding the u-boot bootloader to load the rootfs from an external/internal hard drive or USB flash drive as the integrated flash chip is tiny for Debian or Arch) is that you can then install Open Media Vault, that adds a web management interface and a plugin system to add functionality and turns the device into a nice NAS.

At least for me, and my Zyxel 325v2 (also a kirkwood SoC device)

and here the instructions to install OMV on top of a wheezy debian system http://forums.openmediavault.org/index.php/Thread/5302-Howto-install-OpenMediaVault-on-Debian-7-x-Wheezy/

Never used Open Media Vault but it does look like a nice GUI. How hungry is it on resources compare to webmin.

OMV isn't just a GUI. It has its own stuff.

It runs decently on my zyxel.
