Are you running the latest kernel (4.1.0-kirkwood-tld-2)?

NSA320s - cannot connect two 3,5 '' HDDs
August 15, 2015 04:13PM
another problem raises, as I connect the HDDs.
any 2,5 '' HDD is working fine, but a 3,5 '' HDD is only working in the left slot.
all testet HDDs are working fine on other devices, so it's not on them.

using another power supply and using another PCI-E to S-ATA connector (from my NSA325v2) doesn't solve this.
I've decided to keep the 2,5 Toshiba HDDs because the speed doesn't increase as much as I expected by switching to 3,5 '' HDDS on NSA325v2 but now I have to, otherwhise the NSA320s isn't usable ;-(

any ideas?

Were both of the boot logs above from a power down status? i.e. removed power cord.

yes, first with two 3,5 '' and second with one 3,5 and 2,5 '' HDD
Re: NSA320s - cannot connect two 3,5 '' HDDs

Do this for the 1st case with the missing 2nd HDD:

After booted into Debian:
/bin/echo 47 > /sys/class/gpio/export
/bin/echo "out" > /sys/class/gpio/gpio47/direction

/bin/echo 49 > /sys/class/gpio/export
/bin/echo "out" > /sys/class/gpio/gpio49/direction

/bin/echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio49/value
/bin/echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio47/value
/bin/echo 0 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio49/value

And then check dmesg to see it the 2nd HDD comes up.

If the above did not work, regenerate uImage using the kirkwood-nsa310s.dtb, boot, and repeat the same GPIO commands.

yesterday I tried to connect the HDDs when the box is running and I saw the following:
on the one port on which every HDD is comming up, it's spinning up and you see in the logs that it's up ..
the other port .. is different ..
a 2,5'' HDD is coming up fine ...
all 3.5 '' HDDs doesn't spin up .. sometimes nothing is logged, sometimes it's detected shortly but after a
"EH complete" nothing more

It sounds like the 2nd port does not supply enough power for the 3.5" HDD. Have you tried to boot with either 2.5 or 3.5 HDD in the second port, but no HDD in the first port?

Anybody else seeing this 2nd port problem? If you have the NSA320S, please try with only one 3.5" HDD in the 2nd port.

@pengu,

This might be the same problem we've seen in the NSA325. Where the HDD2 needs to be brought up separately during boot.IIRC, believe this was the issue with 12V vs 5V voltage, which makes sense if the 2.5" HDD works fine.

There is such GPIO in the NSA320S DTS . And it's is a different GPIO from the NSA325's GPIO.

Boot into Debian with both 3.5" HDD installed.
/bin/echo 33 > /sys/class/gpio/export
/bin/echo "out" > /sys/class/gpio/gpio33/direction
/bin/echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio33/value

If this works, I will update the NSA310S/320S u-boot before releasing.

root@debianNSA320s:/sys/class/gpio/gpiochip0# ls
. .. base device label ngpio power subsystem uevent
root@debianNSA320s:/sys/class/gpio/gpiochip0#

root@debianNSA320s:/sys/class/gpio/gpiochip32# ls
. .. base device label ngpio power subsystem uevent

BTW: idt still doesn't power off

tried with NSA310s and NSA320s dtb, same result

OK. Then we'll have to make it available. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that the 12V voltage is the problem.

@pengu,

Please try this u-boot with two 3.5" HDDs installed.
kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2014.07-tld-4-test3.nsa310s.mtd0.kwb -p

U-Boot 2014.07-tld-4-test-3 (Aug 18 2015 - 03:40:53)
ZyXEL NSA310S/320S 1/2-Bay Power Media Server

/bin/echo 33 > /sys/class/gpio/export <- device or resource busy

same with this U-Boot

Edit

when using NSA325 dtb, it's no longer busy

/sys/class/gpio/gpio33 isn't there so I have modified this

no error messages but the HDD doesn't spin up

This test version tries to explicitly power up the 2nd HDD, so you should try "ide reset" in u-boot prompt. Let me know how it goes. The GPIO 33 could have been the wrong one to use.
