Transfer rootfs to SSD

Transfer rootfs to SSD
June 01, 2016 03:42PM
Hello,

I thought I'd read a thread that details how to transfer rootfs to hard drive. I need to do this because of the some of the services I want to run.

I want to do this to SSD.

But I can't find the thread at all. I've searched the forum and via the internet's search engine.

Any help, anyone, please?

The SSD will be placed in a enclosure and connected to the pink pogo via USB cable.

Good or bad idea?

Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot. I'm familiar with that link, which I used to backup the rootfs now stored in a safe space.

You're suggesting I simply restore the backup to the SSD. No problem

Questions; would I need to re-install the packages I have done to the new SSD?

And if yes, would it make sense then to re-back up, and then restore the newer backup to the SSD?

As regards the SSD partitions. I read somewhere here wherein someone had three partitions, swap, rootfs and data. Is this advisable with my current setup, bohdi, which you're familiar with?

Thanks a lot, as usual; pointed and helpful responses from you.

Thanks a lot for that!

No need to. if you back up the current rootfs and then restore it then everything is there.

I would usually recommend using 1 partition on the rootfs drive (a rootfs partition with a swap file in it). Make life simpler.

But since you are using a SSD, which is a large disk, a 2nd partition for data woud be better. But now you will need to worry about booting with multiple partitions. If you have installed the new u-boot, then it is not an issue. But if you are running older u-boot then the envs must be setup to find the correct partition. See here for explanation:

If you don't want to deal with this little bit more complicated issue then just use 1 partition. But really depending on how much time you want to spend learning and get it set up.

Happy to say that I have done this. I created three partitions on the SSD; rootfs, swap and data. Deleted the tar files off the SSD when I was done, again it did not start with them. But after this, I have a running pogo with an SSD. Looks like I will need to install the software I had, luckily, I had not configured any. I think I will backup rootfs after everything is installed and configured, as this would be good for speedy recovery.
