Can't boot v3 with sata hdd attached
December 10, 2016 03:28PM
Running a pogo pro with Debian, uboot.2015.10-tld-1.ox820 and kernel 4.1.0-oxnas-tld-1. The OS is running from USB plugged into the front port. I'm trying to use a hdd plugged into sata. The hdd has an msdos partition table with 3 partitions, ext3, ext4, plus a swap.

I could boot with the hdd attached prior to updating kernel from 3.x.x and older uboot.

I've tried using UUID for root in fstab without any change. It seems fstab has no effect, and the hdd gets assigned /dev/sda1, and it's getting defined as / somehow. The USB is one partition, ext3, and flagged boot.

I have updated the packages with an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.

Re: Can't boot v3 with sata hdd attached

JeffS,

This is a rootfs mounting problem that the default u-boot envs image, that you've flashed, addressed and solved. See the detailed explanation in the Wiki:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,19093

Basically, you did not really need to do anything manually after you have flashed the default envs image. It was not clear in the instruction, my fault for not updating the kernel/rootfs to make clear this point. I've put this box on hold for a long while so forgot to edit it.

Here is how to solve this:

All you need is the default settings that were there after flashing the envs image.
bootcmd=run bootcmd_uenv; run scan_disk; run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_exec; reset
bootcmd_exec=run load_uimage; if run load_initrd; then if run load_dtb; then bootm 0x60500000 0x60e00000 0x62c00000; else bootm 0x60500000 0x60e00000; fi; else if run load_dtb; then bootm 0x60500000 - 0x62c00000; else bootm 0x60500000; fi; fi
bootcmd_uenv=run uenv_load; if test $uenv_loaded -eq 1; then run uenv_import; fi
bootdelay=10
bootdev=usb
usb_custom_params=zswap.enabled=1
device=0:1
devices=usb ide
disks=0 1 2 3
ethaddr=52:3b:20:9c:11:51
ethact=mii0
if_netconsole=ping $serverip

load_dtb=echo loading DTB $dtb_file ...; ext2load $bootdev $device 0x62c00000 $dtb_file
load_initrd=echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device 0x60e00000 /boot/uInitrd
load_uimage=echo loading uImage ...; ext2load $bootdev $device 0x60500000 /boot/uImage

mtdids=nand0=41000000.nand
mtdparts=mtdparts=41000000.nand:14m(boot),-(data)
preboot_nc=run if_netconsole start_netconsole
scan_disk=echo running scan_disk ...; scan_done=0; setenv scan_usb "usb start"; setenv scan_ide "ide reset"; setenv scan_mmc "mmc rescan"; for dev in $devices; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo Scan device $dev; run scan_$dev; for disknum in $disks; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo device $dev $disknum:1; if ext2load $dev $disknum:1 0x60500000 /boot/uImage 1; then scan_done=1; echo Found bootable drive on $dev $disknum; setenv device $disknum:1; setenv bootdev $dev; fi; fi; done; fi; done
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts $custom_params
start_netconsole=setenv ncip $serverip; setenv bootdelay 10; setenv stdin nc; setenv stdout nc; setenv stderr nc; version;
stderr=serial
stdin=serial
stdout=serial
uenv_import=echo importing envs ...; env import -t 0x60500000
uenv_init_devices=setenv init_usb "usb start";  setenv init_ide "ide reset";  setenv init_mmc "mmc rescan"; for devtype in $devices; do run init_$devtype; done;
uenv_load=run uenv_init_devices; setenv uenv_loaded 0; for devtype in $devices;  do for disknum in 0; do run uenv_read_disk; done; done;
uenv_read_disk=if test $devtype -eq mmc; then if $devtype part; then run uenv_read; fi; else if $devtype part $disknum; then run uenv_read; fi; fi
uenv_read=echo loading envs from $devtype $disknum ...; if load $devtype $disknum:1 0x60500000 /boot/uEnv.txt; then setenv uenv_loaded 1; fi
usb_ready_retry=15

These are unecessary, and actually will cause problem in the multiple-partition configuration.
usb_set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10
dt_bootm=bootm $uimage_addr $uinitrd_addr $dtb_addr
dt_load_dtb=ext2load usb 0:1 $dtb_addr /boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb
dt_load_initrd=ext2load usb 0:1 $uinitrd_addr /boot/uInitrd
dt_load_uimage=ext2load usb 0:1 $uimage_addr /boot/uImage
dt_usb_boot=run dt_load_uimage; run dt_load_initrd; run dt_load_dtb; run dt_bootm
dt_usb_bootcmd=run usb_set_bootargs; run dt_usb_boot
dt_bootcmd_usb=usb start; run dt_usb_bootcmd; usb stop
bootcmd=run dt_bootcmd_usb;  reset

-----

Solution: in serial console, remove the extra settings using setenv without value to clear them, for example: setenv uinitrd_addr will remove uinitrd_addr.

uinitrd_addr=0x60e00000
uimage_addr=0x60500000
dtb_addr=0x62c00000
usb_set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10
dt_bootm=bootm $uimage_addr $uinitrd_addr $dtb_addr
dt_load_dtb=ext2load usb 0:1 $dtb_addr /boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb
dt_load_initrd=ext2load usb 0:1 $uinitrd_addr /boot/uInitrd
dt_load_uimage=ext2load usb 0:1 $uimage_addr /boot/uImage
dt_usb_boot=run dt_load_uimage; run dt_load_initrd; run dt_load_dtb; run dt_bootm
dt_usb_bootcmd=run usb_set_bootargs; run dt_usb_boot
dt_bootcmd_usb=usb start; run dt_usb_bootcmd; usb stop
bootcmd=run dt_bootcmd_usb;  reset

and then restore the bootcmd

setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_uenv; run scan_disk; run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_exec; reset'

And then boot
boot

Do these in serial console to make sure it boots correctly, and then set them permanently in Debian.

Thanks for the detailed explanation bodhi,

This u-boot stuff is all new, so bear with me. I followed your instructions and can boot with the hdd attached and everything seems ok now. I'm a bit unsure about setting them permanently though. If I understood what I read correctly, I would use the saveenv command from the serial console to write the changes made to the variables in memory to persistent storage. So I tried it, and so far so good.

I've made changes to the variables from the Linux command line using fw_setenv and from the u-boot terminal using setenv. Are both these methods doing the same thing, just changing the variables in memory? Is there an fw_saveenv command that would work from the Linux command line the same as saveenv?

I'm also a bit confused by the fact that I rebooted the pogo several times during testing, and the changes I made to U-boot var's seemed to stay put, even before I ran the saveenv command.

Here's a current list of u-boot variables. I notice the order seems to have rotated from bottom to top during the changing things process.

This is correct. But as I mentioned, since you have serial console, you can set them for this boot only (without saveenv). And then use fw_setenv in Debian to set them permanently. Just a good practice to do it in 2 steps.

No, fw_setenv is the same command as setenv+saveenv in u-boot. fw_setenv is permanent.

Your envs look fine! except that these are redundant.

> uimage_addr=0x60500000
> uinitrd_addr=0x60e00000

Because these 2 envs use explicit location.
load_initrd=echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device 0x60e00000 /boot/uInitrd
load_uimage=echo loading uImage ...; ext2load $bootdev $device 0x60500000 /boot/uImage

As you can tell, the default envs for the Pogo V3 is a little behind comparing to the Kirkwood default envs, in term of robustness. Those 2 addresses should be variables, but I never got around to update them :)
