Boot problems with GoFlexNet – kernel command ignored, USB not available
April 02, 2017 06:02PM
Hi!

I'm trying to get Debian running on a Seagate GoFlex Net. For this I setup a serial connection to the GoFlex and booted an up-to date version of Uboot to load the Linux image.

The initial problem was to find a working USB thumb drive. With the first couple I tried loading files did not work. Only after a number of attempts followed by USB resets did it succeed. Any ideas why certain drives are problematic?

Even now, with a drive, I cannot Linux to run. The proper command line is not passed to Linux. At least not reliably. Additionally Linux does not seem to see the USB drive as a valid device for its root filesystem. It finds and initializes the USB hub and the thumb drive but does not show it among the valid boot partitions.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions in solving this.
Below are the full logs of the whole boot process.

Best regards,
Baldiun

Balduin,

First, let me say that you're doing everything in a nice way :) kwboot the box with serial console and load u-boot envs from disk. It's the safest way to install u-boot: alway kwboot first if you can.

Problem is with your USB rootfs. Make sure you followed the instruction in the kernel/rootfs thread very closely.

1. Step 4 should be skipped because you are booting with FDT kernel, and the new u-boot.

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

So reverse that step by restoring original uImage. Mount the USB drive on another LInux box and (if it was mounted as sdb1):
cd /media/sdb1/boot
mv uImage uImage.goflexnet
mv uImage.orig uImage

2. And doublecheck that this USB rootfs partition is labeled as rootfs.
e2label /dev/sdb1

3. umount and sync
sync

Try booting again.

Btw, USB drives that are used for booting should be of high quality, such as Sandisk brand.

Lot of generic or low quality brand USB flash drives tend to have problem with uboot. And doing a few "usb reset" might help with those. Better yet, I have added this env that will help in those cases:

usb_ready_retry

Set it to the number of seconds that you want uboot to wait for the drive to power up.

Ahh, my fault. I read these instructions as "step4 is optional with newer versions of Uboot" and figured it would not hurt to append the DTB.

After restoring the plain kernel image the boot works now :-)
Thanks a lot for your help!

Could you please elaborate what exactly went wrong there? As far as I understand the process Uboot will load the kernel, the initrd and the DTB to ram and then boot the kernel passing the other two and the boot cmdline as parameters. Why does the concatenated DTB disturb this process and why was the kernel able to initialize the USB subsystem but not boot from it? During my previous attempts (somehow using the wrong cmdline) the USB drive was likely mounted as /dev/sda and this was what the kernel was supposed to use as rootfs.

BTW, there are still some USB-related I/O errors during the boot-up sequence but they don't seem to have any negative impact. A full log is at the end of this post. Never mind the DHCP failure as I did not connect the GoFlex to a network yet.

For me it was quite the opposite. I tried with a Sandisk drive first and failed miserably. It would take like 10 reset cycles just to load the very small DTB let alone the kernel and initrd. Now with a Transcent drive I have no problems with Uboot only those errors the kernel reports during bootup.

Been there, done that ;-)

I found other posts around this forum that mentioned the option and even setting it to values near a minute did not really help with the Sandisk USB drive. It doesn't seem to be a problem with powering up but rather with reading. When I connect the same USB drive to my laptop it works flawlessly and fsck cannot find any problems or bad sectors. Maybe the FlexNet's USB hardware is a bit picky...

Best regards,
Balduin

The bootargs from the appended DTB was used by the kernel to boot. When the kernel sees the appended DTB, that is the copy that takes precedent. Remember, this appended DTB approach is temporary in order to phase in the device tree slowly and allow old u-boot to work with FDT kernel, so it is not supposed to be merged with the separate DTB.

I could have coded the DTS in more resilient way and allowing the rootfs to be mounted even in this secnario, but I purposely avoided doing that. The reason is it will mask the mistake (both separate DTB and appended DTB are used). It's best to let it fail, and we will see the error right away.

Since the bootargs for rootfs is root=LABEL=rootfs, any drive that has partition labeled rootfs is used for mounting. This has the advantage that regardless which drive (sda1, sdb1, ....) the rootfs is on, it will work. sda1 is only used when there is no such bootargs to guide the kernel where to find rootfs.

That's the first time I heard reports about a Sandisk flash drive that failed to be recognized by u-boot!

It is not exactly powering up or reading. This error occurs during the drive is "spinning up", i.e. the enumeration process.

But whichever brand works for you is great, all we care :)

Re: Boot problems with GoFlexNet – kernel command ignored, USB not available

Hi bodhi,

thanks again for your invaluable help. Direct advice is really great when you're new to a field like I am here :-)

Ahh yes, that makes sense. I did not realize that the bootargs are part of the DTB as well.

I absolutely agree with this, but it's always best to understand one's mistakes :-)

Sorry, you got my question wrong. When the kernel used the attached DTB it tried to boot from /dev/sda1. This failed even though previously in the boot process the USB drive was properly detected. From my bootlog in the initial post

I assumed that this drive becomes available as /dev/sda (since there is no other disc in the system) and could still serve as the rootfs which the kernel expects to be /dev/sda1.

There always a first, I guess :-)
It actually is recognized but I have a hard time loading anything from it. For the records and your entertainment, here's an example session:

I "solved" the whole issue by using another USB drive so no need to bother with this. Maybe it's because the Sandisk is rather old. It's a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro.

One question from my last post remains open. Even with the USB drive that works with Uboot I see a couple of errors from Linux. The system seems to boot up fine regardless of those erros. Should I worry about them still and maybe try to find yet another drive?

Edit: I think I can answer that last question myself now. The errors are serious and for some boot ups Linux cannot make it through. Even if it does boot up any access to the USB drive may result in similar errors and worse

This system sure is picky about the USB drives it cooperates with :-/

Re: Boot problems with GoFlexNet – kernel command ignored, USB not available

Balduin,

That's abnormal. Either you have power supply problem, or the Sandisk thumb drive needs to be reformatted. Try wipe out all partitions and recreate rootfs partition.

I dont think uboot is that picky.
