My Cloud Mirror Gen2 u-boot
July 05, 2017 12:04PM
As a follow up from this post could a My Cloud Mirror Gen2 user please try to kwboot the attached u-boot?

You will need to decompress it first using gzip:
$ gunzip u-boot-a38x-GrandTeton_2014T3_PQ-nand-uart.bin.gz

You will also need to use a patched kwboot binary (amd64 / arm):
./kwboot -f -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b u-boot-a38x-GrandTeton_2014T3_PQ-nand-uart.bin -s 0 -q 1

The timing is not perfect you may have to try multiple times. Follow these instructions if you cannot get your MCM Gen 2 to kwboot.

Yeah, welcome to the club! kwboot isn't predictable sadly.

Okay, so this proves at least that the WD u-boot sources are correct and you can kwboot the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 (so you have an unbrick option if you manage to corrupt u-boot on nand). Both good news.

I'm not entirely up on why the MCM Gen 2 can't boot Debian. Is it because u-boot is missing saveenv?

According to peacemaker's instructions, the MCM Gen 2 is identical to the EX2 Ultra, except with less NAND flash (256MB instead of 512MB).

mcmg2, have you tried peacemaker's instructions to boot Debian on the MCM Gen 2?

Alternatively, could you try the below instructions with bodhi's mvebu rootfs for USB booting? I've attached the MCM Gen 2 DTB to this post.

setenv bootdev usb
setenv device '0:1'
setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/armada-385-wd-mcmg2.dtb'
setenv load_dtb_addr 0x1000000
setenv load_initrd_addr 0x2900000
setenv load_image_addr 0x02000000
setenv load_dtb 'echo loading DTB $dtb_file ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_dtb_addr $dtb_file'
setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'
setenv load_image 'echo loading Image ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/zImage'
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial"'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'echo Booting from USB ...; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; usb start; run load_image; run load_dtb; run usb_set_bootargs; bootz $load_image_addr -  $load_dtb_addr'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_bootcmd; reset'
run bootcmd_usb

Please post the log output if it does not boot to login prompt so we can diagnose what's wrong.

Edit: you don't need to run kwboot with sudo if your permissions on /dev/ttyUSB0 are correct. Check the owner of the device and add your user to the group (it's usually something like dialout) so you can run it as a normal user. Once adding yourself to the group, you'll need to log out of the GUI session or SSH to localhost for the group changes to take effect. Or you can just reboot.

Re: My Cloud Mirror Gen2

All,

You don't need to boot with zImage. It is simpler to boot with uImage and DTB append to it. Booting zImage has advantage, but need to be figured out. Booting with uImage should get it working quicker.

And make sure you follow the instruction in this thread very closely:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,32146
to create the rootfs.

Re: My Cloud Mirror Gen2

mcmg2 & hmartin,

On this WD Mirror Gen 2, you need to boot the same way as the WD My Cloud EX4100.

On your new rootfs Debian-4.9.0-mvebu-tld-12-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 on USB, append the Mirror Gen2 DTB to uImage. Assuming the USB drive is /media/sdb1.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.9.0-mvebu-tld-12  zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-385-wd-mcmg2.dtb  >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.9.0-mvebu-tld-12 -d zImage.fdt  uImage

kwboot, interrupt serial console and,

setenv bootdev 'usb'
setenv device '0:1'
setenv load_image_addr '0x02000000'
setenv load_initrd_addr '0x2900000'
setenv load_image 'echo loading Image ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'echo Booting from USB ...; usb start; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; usb start; run usb_set_bootargs; if run load_image; then if run load_initrd; then bootm $load_image_addr $load_initrd_addr; else bootm $load_image_addr; fi; fi'
run bootcmd_usb

I'll upload the patch for hmartin to build a new patched MCM2 u-boot for you, mcmg2. It is needed so that the bootcmd will not be wiped out, and the USB rootfs will be active for the kernel to mount it.

On this WD Mirror Gen 2, you need to boot the same way as the WD My Cloud EX4100.

That isn't the problem here. u-boot is not picking up the USB stick:
(Re)start USB...

       scanning usb for ethernet devices... 0 Ethernet Device(s) found

There is an 8GB USB stick plugged in and formatted ext2/3/4. It is detected by the WD firmware during boot:

...
EXT2-fs (sda1): warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

Did you end up making any modifications to the u-boot sources for EX4100 to initialise USB? On the EX2100 we don't have this problem.

@mcmg2,

hmartin is right, tt seems this u-boot does not bring up the USB drive, does not have power! How many USB ports this box has? did you try other USB port?

scanning usb for storage devices... 0 Storage Device(s) found

@hmartin,

Use the patch I've attached in the WD EXT4100 u-boot instruction post:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,34103,35255#msg-35255

@all,

Try booting with uImage to make it simpler. zImage can be tried later if you need it.

It has two USB 3 ports on the backside: https://www.allround-pc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/WD-MyCloud-Mirror-R%C3%BCckseite.jpg

I doubt the other port will make any difference. Let me take a look at the u-boot patch you posted, maybe we can get USB functional during u-boot on the MCM Gen 2.

Edit: looking at your u-boot patch now. The MCM Gen 2 u-boot source is a bit different. It doesn't seem to be disabling USB power:
#if 0   //ALPHA_CUSTOMIZE, Casper marked, 20150525
        ulong value32=0;

        /* disable USB led */
        /* TODO: unplug USB power via uP */
        value32 = *((ulong  *)(0xF1018140));
        value32 &= ~(1<<(48-32));
        *((ulong  *)(0xF1018140)) = value32;
#endif

The whole section is wrapped in if 0, so this won't be in the final binary...

Yes, I am still working on u-boot for the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2.

However until we figure out why USB is not being initialized during u-boot, there cannot be any progress toward booting Debian from USB.

I am not really sure how to proceed from here. I do not own the MCM Gen 2, and according to the u-boot source, USB should be active. I (and maybe bodhi) will need to look deeper into the u-boot source to try and figure out how to enable USB during u-boot. Alternatively, you can try a different USB stick/port and see if u-boot is able to detect it at all. I didn't have this problem on the EX2100, USB works in stock u-boot.

If you're looking to have this solved quickly, I don't think that will happen. If you check the EX4100 thread, it was still weeks of debugging before we got things working. Western Digital publishes the GPL source code for the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2, so if you are impatient for us, you can always try to build u-boot yourself.

Re: My Cloud Mirror Gen2

After reviewing the source more and looking at the u-boot changes for ClearFrog, it seems that Western Digital has maybe disabled USB in u-boot. However this doesn't make any sense to me, since I assume MCM Gen 2 still allows for USB firmware recovery, and I do not see in u-boot source where they are enabling USB before loading the kernel/ramdisk from USB.

ClearFrog source has #define ENV_USB_ACTIVE "1" and in the GrandTeton source this is 0. I changed to 1.

Please try the following to see if USB is initialized:
setenv bootdev 'usb'
setenv device '0:1'
setenv load_image_addr '0x02000000'
setenv load_initrd_addr '0x2900000'
setenv load_image 'echo loading Image ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
run load_image

Edit: attached my changes to u-boot source if someone else wants to start working.

Look in the source GPL for where they allow to push the button to activate USB. There is a button somewhere on this box, I assume.

setenv bootdev 'usb'
setenv device '0:1'
setenv load_image_addr '0x02000000'
setenv load_initrd_addr '0x2900000'
setenv load_image 'usb start; echo loading Image ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
run load_image

We need "usb start" above.

I removed usb on port 1 and put back on port2 and tried to run load_imge.

mcmg2,

> I removed usb on port 1 and put back on port2 and

:)) that's what I thought and suggested before. Apparently, only one USB port is activated in u-boot.

You are good to go:
scanning usb for storage devices... 1 Storage Device(s) found
       scanning usb for ethernet devices... 0 Ethernet Device(s) found
loading Image ...
3921006 bytes read in 422 ms (8.9 MiB/s)

OK. Try the these at the u-boot prompt:

setenv bootdev 'usb'
setenv device '0:1'
setenv load_image_addr '0x02000000'
setenv load_initrd_addr '0x2900000'
setenv load_image 'echo loading Image ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'echo Booting from USB ...; usb start; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; usb start; run usb_set_bootargs; if run load_image; then if run load_initrd; then bootm $load_image_addr $load_initrd_addr; else bootm $load_image_addr; fi; fi'
run bootcmd_usb

The kernel has booted. But the DTB seems not to be the right one.

I have not seen the Mirror Gen 2 DTS before so not sure. Let hmartin help you. If you guys need to ask question later, I'll come back to this thread.

Implying I have any idea about hardware I have never seen ;-)

I built the file you linked to from Google Drive. I have no idea if this is the correct DTS for the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 or not. Seems like not!

Please try the attached DTB. It's for EX2U, but the hardware is similar enough it may work. Alternatively, try to boot with the uImage from peacemaker which includes the same DTB as attached.

I assume that you appended the DTB to the uImage?

Just to inform you, I am travelling for the next week and won't be able to work on this.
