:) With a HDD inside the enclosure and no fan, this box is destined to be in a short life.

kirkwood thermal is in the kernel. But sometime it can not be used and i2c tool is needed.

Yes, it is likely needed because thermal will be an issue. It seems a case mod is needed, even a thermal sensor is in it.

I checked Marvell Kirkwood thermal driver. It doesn't do anything but monitor the temp of the CPU.

Using stock Debian kernel (stretch):
Linux mnemotest 4.9.0-3-marvell #1 Debian 4.9.30-2+deb9u2 (2017-06-26) armv5tel GNU/Linux
I ran my IX2-ng box for about 1 hour with your script:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1MiB &
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null bs=1MiB &

No problems with shutting down. Here is the temp readings:
root@mnemotest:~# sensors
kirkwood_thermal-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +69.0°C

adt7473-i2c-0-2e
Adapter: mv64xxx_i2c adapter
in1: +1.11 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +2.99 V)
+3.3V: +3.36 V (min = +2.96 V, max = +3.61 V)
fan1: 3087 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
fan2: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
fan3: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
fan4: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM)
temp1: +48.2°C (low = -63.0°C, high = +191.0°C)
                       (crit = +100.0°C, hyst = +96.0°C)
Board Temp: +46.0°C (low = -63.0°C, high = +191.0°C)
                       (crit = +100.0°C, hyst = +96.0°C)
temp3: +42.5°C (low = -63.0°C, high = +191.0°C)
                       (crit = +100.0°C, hyst = +96.0°C)

smartctl -a /dev/sda1 reports:
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 110 104 000 Old_age Always - 37

So nice and cool here and no problems. But if your box works with stock firmware, then it maybe isn't related to thermal issues? I dunno.

bodhi, sarcastic.mannequin

Thank you for answer. I ordered new more powerful power supply 3A/12V instead 2A (2 years old). I am going to replace it along with HDD and try again.

Well, I've got data which says otherwise. Currently my clients own 6 units. Oldest has about 3 years. Those works 24/7 for backup purposes. None of them died. I killed hard drive once because of swapping, ext2 filesystem contained ~ 10^7 files.

My plan is to rule thermal issue too. Put the disk outside, and install the fan to cool down the CPU.

Here they mention the temperatures of CPU and board. There must be another temp sensor somewhere.

could you suggest boot envs that check zImage then uImage so I can boot old debian7 with stock kernel.

I want to test network speed on debian7 with stock kernel. I am pretty sure that it was 2 times faster than debian8 with kernel 4.4.

thank you

I'd doubt that is the case. Similar network chip is used in all Kirkwood boxes and I did not see that much difference.

Did you test the pure network speed with iperf? or did you mean the NFS or Samba xfer speed are slower?

iomega ez,

How do you boot it? via usb?

Show me please ls -l /boot/

You can try load kernel to different memory places like:
I've had same issue with (stopping @ Starting kernel ...) with:
bootcmd2=ide dev 1;ide read 0x40000 0x800 0x1800; ide read 0x900000 0x2000 0x1800; bootm 0x40000 0x900000;

Try instead:
ide read 0x40000 0x5000 0x2000; ide read 0x2100000 0xA000 0x4000; bootm 0x40000 0x2100000

You might not loaded complete kernel or initrd, or by writing to 0x900000 you've overwritten something important in the memory.

Meaning:
ide read addr blk# cnt
Meaning:
ide read #memory_address_to_copy_to #starting_disk_sector #number_of_sectors_to_load
Sector size = 512B

Can you please try to do the stability test from this thread and leave it to one hour?
What performance do you get? How do you test it? What protocol, give us some details.

I use usb to boot debian.

I normally use hd-idle or hdparm to keep it cool. only my family use this device so normally it is on standby.

network test

samba read 75MB/s
samba write 42.9MB/s
ftp read 79.375MB/s
ftp write 46.521MB/s

I used to get about the same performance but now I am using jessie with 4.4 kernel. so I am trying to boot with old system to test network performance.

debian9 fail to boot

it just stops on starting kernel.

iomega ez,
Please look @ this message: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,35331,35423#msg-35423
And then you may try to modify:

iomega ez
## Loading Ramdisk Image at 01100000 ...
to point higher addres in the memory like I wrote in previous message.

iomega ez,

If it stops here without further output

> Starting kernel ...

Then you could add earlyprintk to see if you can get more output.

Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
boot

setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=spi_flash:0x7e000@0(u-boot),0x1000@0x7f000(env),0x1000@0x7e000(env2) earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; run usb_scan; printenv bootargs; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x40000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb $(usb_device) 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x40000 0x2100000'

now it boots ok
