Installing webmin
September 11, 2010 02:10PM
I have just done my first Debian install on my Dockstar. Everything went pretty well, no problems, except that when Debian booted up, for some reason, it got a different DHCP address from the built-in dockstar linux. It took a while before I realized I hadn't bricked it.

My question is this: I changed my /etc/atp/sources.list to a site more local to me: as follows:

deb http://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/debian squeeze main

When I try to apt-get install webmin, I get a message saying "Unable to locate package webmin". Do I just have a bad repository, or are there additional lines I need in the sources.list file?

Webmin hasn't been part of the Debian distro for several years (see http://bugs.debian.org/343897), but there seems to be a .deb package available on the project's home page. I have no experience with it myself.

This is always the case for me. It's normal.
Not sure about the webmin part. Why do you need to reinstall it?

Thanks for the info. I was afraid I had configured something wrong. I am very new to this and was wanting to install webmin to see if it offered features I could use. I comes installed standard on Turnkey Linux, which I have used a couple of times, so I figured it was worth investigating.

I found this information from
http://www.webmin.com/deb.html

It works find for me.

If you like to install and update Webmin via APT, edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file on your system and add the line :
deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib

cd /root
wget http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc
apt-key add jcameron-key.asc
apt-get update
apt-get install webmin

Hi - I'm a genuine total noobie - new to debian, new to linux (and new to dockstart)... I've learned a lot in the past few days... but, i'm still quite ignorant...

I installed webmin and it works fine - it's quite an interesting tool; but every time I reboot debian/dockstar i have to start it manually (issue '/etc/webmin/start' from root). this is somewhat of a pain. I know there must be a way to make it startup on boot - i've tried the 'link' in webmin itself but 'no joy'.

Does anyone have any suggestions or links.

Thanks,

- Ray

Have you looked at the webmin entry in the Bootup and Shutdown module? Is Webmin set to start at boot?

This is a pretty old thread :)

Anyways, here is a quick webmin tutorial I just put together - http://blog.qnology.com/2014/11/debian-on-pogoplug-tutorial-webmin.html
