Looks like preboot tries to execute preboot_c ... Can you paste the output of fw_printenv ?

This is part of the netconsole starting command:

preboot_nc=run if_netconsole start_netconsole

If you want to start netconsole (which is probably not needed, since you have serial console), then the preboot env should be:
preboot=run preboot_nc

Reset this to disable netconsole start

fw_setenv preboot

When you want to activate netconsole (when serial is not connected), set this in Debian before rebooting:
fw_setenv preboot 'run preboot_nc'

Usually it is 700 MHz. You can try running at 850 MHz which is stable using the file from the following post: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,16017,17548#msg-17548.

Hi Bodhi!

HELP Please!

I flashed 850 MHz Uboot, and my Pogo p24 died. :(
I have serial connection, but nothing showed.

800MHz uboot was fine. (Why I tried 850???? always searching maximum...Krrrrr. :) )

I only execute this command :
./nandwrite /dev/mtd0 uboot.spl.2013.10.ox820.850mhz.mtd0.img

without the
/usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0x0 6

command before!

Did I do something wrong?

Is is totally dead or are there any way to recover?

@robert,

Bad news if you don't see anything on serial console. And yes, always need to erase before writing to NAND.

Quote
Instruction in 1st post

6. Erase 6 blocks on mtd0
/usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0x0 6

7. Flash encoded spl stage1 to 0x0
/usr/sbin/nandwrite /dev/mtd0 uboot.spl.2013.10.ox820.mtd0.img

Fortunately, there is a way to recover: You can to boot with SATA.

1. Connect SATA cable to the Pogo V3.
2. Prepare the HDD with SATA version of SPL and u-boot, and with your current rootfs . See shv's post here:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,16017,17297#msg-17297

I am not using SATA booting so don't have a completed instruction for you.

@shv,

Perhaps you can post your SATA boot step-by-step instruction or log?

Thank you very much for very fst response!!!!

It was my fault not to erase uboot before flash.
( I will have "Punishment" for it. Sorry for bad joke (just I've finished -and shocked by- Dostoyevsky book tonight :) )

Thanks for pointing to Sata boot. I will try! and refer.

Great book :)

You should keep the log of the installation in case you need to repeat it when installing new version. It helps to go over it before installation to refresh memory.

Re: 2013.10 U-Boot for Pogoplug V3 (OXNAS)
February 06, 2015 05:29PM
@Robert,

First, I think you've missed the u-boot envs file. u-boot envs text file should also be in the HDD. That's what I remembered, but it was a long time ago that I looked at WarheadsSE procedure. The booting was not successful because the default envs were used. Hence the error:
Failed to read valid environment from disk, using built-in default

Second, if you could not make SATA booting to work with WarheadsSE files then perhaps you should use shv's files to flash new spl, u-boot images to the HDD. You also need u-boot envs file. The procedure is same as WarheadsSE's describe, but with new set of images. See my post above for that.

You're doing it correctly (all you need is to boot successfully with SATA into ALARM, and then recovery is a sure thing). Using WarheadsSE old installation is indeed great for rescue purpose.

I'm attempting updating my 1st PogoPlug Pro with the latest U-Boot and have run into an issue. I followed the instructions at the first post, but skipped step 9 and 10 because I still have the stock firmware installed. Now when I boot I can no longer interact via my serial console. @Robert,
your boot environment looks OK for the old WarheadsSE booting procedure. It looks that you don't have the right rootfs on partition sda2 (ext3/partition name rootfs).

Nevertheless I want to recommend you to use new uboot. Bodhi already pointed you to my post: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,16017,17297#msg-17297.

The device must support 512 Byte sector size either natively or by simulation.

Step1: prepare mbr partition table:
sda1: rootfs including boot files (ext4) with partition name rootfs
sda2: linux swap partition
sda3: data (ext4)
Step2: Extract the content of the archive http://pogoplug.cwsurf.de/ox820-sata-uboot.tar.gz to your rootfs partition

Step3: Prepare SATA booting by adapting and executing the following script
#!/bin/sh

# uncomment line below and set to the correct disk
#disk=/dev/sda

if [ -z "${disk}" ] ; then
   echo "You must uncomment/set the 'disk' variable"
   exit -1
fi

workarea="/boot"

stage1File=$workarea/u-boot-spl.bin

perl <<EOF | dd of="$disk" bs=512
    print "\x00" x 0x1a4;
    print "\x00\x5f\x01\x00";
    print "\x00\xdf\x00\x00";
    print "\x00\x80\x00\x00";
    print "\x00" x (0x1b0 -0x1a4 -12 );
    print "\x22\x80\x00\x00";
    print "\x22\x00\x00\x00";
    print "\x00\x80\x00\x00";
EOF

if [ -f $stage1File ];then
        echo "Writing stage 1"
        dd if=$stage1File    of="$disk" bs=512 seek=34
fi
Step4: Boot with serial cable connected and adapt the boot-env settings to your needs

@rayknight,

You've missed this instruction:

Requirements:

The starting point could be one of of the following:

1 .Your Pogo V3 is already running Debian rootfs with Arch kernel
2. Your Pogo V3 is already running Arch rootfs with Arch kernel
3. Your Pogo V3 is already running the latest Debian rootfs from Latest Linux Kernel 3.xx and rootfs Pogo V3 thread (or you plan to run this rootfs after installing U-Boot)
4. You are running stock kernel, and have gained SHH access to the box, and have downloaded u-boot-tools and mtd-utils (fw_setenv, flash_erase, nandwrite …) to work with NAND mtds. And plan to run a USB rootfs that came from any of the above 3.

Note the requirements states that you need to run new rootfs that came from any of the first 3. This u-boot won't work with stock firmware.

Yes, there should be a way for you to connect netconsole and then either switch back to serial console, or change u-boot envs to boot the latest Debian rootfs. Let me take a look at the code to see which ip address was set in the default envs.

You can switch back to serial console by pressing a key very quickly when you see the serial console starts. Try pressing any key even before it starts and keep pounding it very quickly. It will interrupt u-boot and get to the prompt.

Thanks for the reply bodhi. However, after further web searches I believe I am closer to what I actually want. I found some posts on the Arch Arm Linux forums and then some pointers to github for Pogoplug_V3_Emdebian_Debian which also had directions for creating a bootable SATA disk. I can now directly boot the SATA disk I created. I will be studying the scripts and I should be able to figure out how to modify them to use the newer 3.17 kernel from your links and the Debian Jessie repositories to create a bootable SATA disk with a 3.17 kernel and Debian Jessie. Since I want to run from the SATA disk it seems that I didn't really need to upgrade U-Boot at all! I have 2 Pogoplug Pro's and a Classic B01 that I am modifying the case front to include an eSATA port. I even located a nice MassCool enclosure that includes a USB power cable with the eSATA cable and a USB 2.0 cable that works great to power the drive from the front USB port.

Thanks,
Ray

Hi SHV,

Thank you for help!
It is not 100% clear what to do, but I will try.
Situation reminds me to have a helicopter view for things to do, but with eyes patched. :)

Unfortunately I cant manage to work WarheadsSE steps. After 2 days very hard trial, I allway failed to start loading kernel or If it starts allways hang up. Something wrong with my rootfs. It is suspect my HDD has some special defect or else.

So I will tried the second advise: new uboot.

I did following steps:

fdisk /dev/sdc
o - emty partion table
n - Create part 1
n - Create part 2 - type 82
n - Create part 3
w - write

510 mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1
513 mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc3
514 tune2fs -L "rootfs" /dev/sdc1
522 tune2fs -L "adat" /dev/sdc3
518 mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/sdc1

Extract the content ox820-sata-uboot.tar.gz
copy /boot to rootfs partition
530 umount rootfs
531 umount adat

modify disk_create_shv - disk modified to sdc.
run it:
#./disk_create_shv

detach from PC and attached to Pogo

Tried to boot.

Looks like it's trying to read from disk but nothing's found...

Steps that worked for me:

- put u-boot-spl.bin (from http://pogoplug.cwsurf.de/ox820-sata-uboot.tar.gz) as stage1 to disk (assuming sdc from your output above):

dd if=u-boot-spl.bin of="$disk" bs=512 seek=34

- created ext4 partition as rootfs containing boot files
- untared rootfs from linux-3.16.0-oxnas-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2 to it
- copied u-boot.env, u-boot.img from ox820-sata-uboot.tar.gz to /boot
- renamed /boot/ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb to /boot/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb

./mkenvimage -s 16384 -o u-boot.env u-boot-env.txt

You might change things to 3.17 rootfs and kernel. This is how my current boot directory looks like.

Hi Morph027

Thanks for detailed steps!

I have some doubt please clarify them:
Regarding linux-3.16.0-oxnas-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2 file:
Q1: Is it sure not typo here? "- untared rootfs from linux-3.16.0-oxnas-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2 to it "
It is a kernel tar file not containing rootfs.
Mybe you mean Debian-3.16.... ? (But I cant find Debian-3.16 too...)

Q2: Also a litle confusing: The link shows tld-1 but the file is -tld4- to be download - is this a problem? or should not bother with it?

Q3: Where the mkenvimage is?

Sorry for many question....

Regards,
Robert

Robert,
Can you please upload the script which you used for step3?

The latest rootfs is Debian-3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 but this is not your problem because at least one of two prerequisites for SATA booting seams to be not met.

You don't need mkenvimage because you can use the serial console to adapt the boot env.

-shv

Does your SATA u-boot envs setup work with rootfs Debian-3.12.13-oxnas-tld-5-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (with step 6 in the instruction to set up FDT envs)?

Also should it work with Debian-3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 if you skip step 4 in the instruction (don't make embeded DTB uImage)?
