Help unbricking IOmega ix4-200d
May 22, 2017 03:45PM
Help! I have two IX4-200D NAS boxes that are currently useless. The original hard dives are gone and have been replaced with larger 4 TB Seagate NAS Hard drives. I'm fairly new to this and was hoping someone could provide assistance with installing Debian to get them back up and running. I have my console hooked up and can see the units boot in Putty but I'm not sure where to go from there. Thanks in advance and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to learn.

Connect serial console, power up. Please capture the entire putty log (from u-boot banner until it fails to boot), and post it here (in code tags).

Thank you Bodhi,

I have tried reading through the different threads but I am having trouble piecing it all together. I'm not really sure where to start. I think most people on here have a decent knowledge of the process but this is all new to me. Can you help me get going in the right direction or point me towards some resources that will get me up to speed with what I need to know to tackle this project?

Thanks,
Derek

I think my biggest issue is that I'm trying to do this from a Windows machine and most everything I am reading in the threads are linux.

Derek,

It is true, everything here is written in Linux. And they are all command line instructions. But you went pretty far in that you have connected the serial console with Putty and can see what going on in this box. Your log showed that it is booting with stock kernel. So it is not bricked! Our goal is always getting these box to run Debian. And it is doable.

1. You need another Linux system running to install new rootfs and use it to learn Linux. So you could either download Linux Live CD and boot with it on your Windows PC. Or better yet, install a full Linux system such as Linux Mint on a different partition in the Windows PC or on a different USB drive boot with it. And not touching your Windows system. But you can make it permanent by installing on a HDD partition on this Windows PC (and select to boot it in BIOS menu).

I would use 2 USB flash drives, one to put Linux Mint ISO on it using Windows. And boot it up. After you booted Mint installation ISO, plug in another USB drive (about 16GB or 32GB). And then install Mint on it. So you always have a real Linux system to play with.

2. Download the Debian rootfs Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 tarball in this thread:

Updated 20 Feb 2016:

This Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 is to keep in sync with kernel Linux-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1.

Basic minimal Debian Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 137M
- install size: 398M
- a basic jessie rootfs.
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see note 2 below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, and sysvinit-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

And boot up Linux Mint, bring up Terminal app

- Become root (with su comand).
- Format a USB drive with one Ext3 partition (you need to learn which Linux commands to do this).
- Execute the tar comand as instructed in that section to extract the rootfs tarball to the Ext3 USB drive

3. After you have created the Debian rootfs on USB drive, come back here and I'll point you to the u-boot setup posts that others use to boot this Debian rootfs on the ix4-200d with stock u-boot.

------

So the first important step is to run Linux Mint or Ubuntu on your Windows machine. I recommend Linux Mint with Cinamon desktop. This is a good instruction to start:
https://itsfoss.com/guide-install-linux-mint-16-dual-boot-windows/

It was written for Mint 16, and we are now at Mint 18. So you will download Mint 18.1 here: https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php.

Thanks for the excellent instructions Bodhi. I used Linux Mint and successfully formatted a USB drive with the ext3 file system and created the rootfs. I'm ready for the next step.

Derek,

With serial console connected, and putty (Windows) or picocom (Linux Mint) running. Power up, interrupt serial console (type any key to interrupt it). And get the listing of avialable u-boot commands and u-boot envs:

help
printenv

And post the output of the entire serial console here like you did before.

This was the instruction from the thread Iomega ix4-200d U-boot needed.

Plug in the USB rootfs.

Interrupt serial console and copy/paste each line to the u-boot prompt:
setenv usb_make_boot_args 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:$(uboot_size)@$(uboot_start)(uboot),$(env_size)@$(env_start)(env),$(kernel_size)@$(kernel_start)(zImage),$(initrd_size)@$(initrd_start)(initrd),32m@0x0(flash) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'
setenv load_initrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv usb_boot 'usb start; run load_uimage; run load_initrd; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run usb_make_boot_args ; run usb_boot; reset'
printenv
boot

And pls post serial console log for this.

It seems to hang at the end of the posted console log below. I assume the unexpected "(" has something to do with it hanging.

Derek,

I think the rootfs was not created correctly.

Please create this USB rootfs again , and this time keep the log of how you did this on Mint terminal. And post the entire log here.

I could be wrong, but it sounded like the USB drive has some problems, i.e. no partition or the partition is dirty or damage, etc. Also, the ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell! message (quoted below) indicates this USB drive has no rootfs label (or damage).

Thanks!

However, now after rebooting, it goes back to the Marvell prompt. Also, what is uboot and should it be updated?
Re: Help unbricking IOmega ix4-200d

Derek,

What you did with these commands were to set necessary u-boot envs temporarily for bootting. Once it is working like now, you need to save them. The bold line is the command to save envs.

setenv usb_make_boot_args 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=orion_nand:$(uboot_size)@$(uboot_start)(uboot),$(env_size)@$(env_start)(env),$(kernel_size)@$(kernel_start)(zImage),$(initrd_size)@$(initrd_start)(initrd),32m@0x0(flash)'
setenv load_initrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv usb_boot 'usb start; run load_uimage; run load_initrd; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run usb_make_boot_args ; run usb_boot; reset'
saveenv
printenv
boot

So go ahead and power up, interrupt serial console and execute each command. Afer this, it will be persistent.

Dear bodhi

Hi, I have one of this NAS with the original software (after buy the nas to a fellow and restore the last firmware on it), it was running well but I decide to upgrade it with 4 3TB disks, it works for a while until reboot, then I lost the raid and everything in there (i have a backup :>)... so I decide install debian on it, or another linux distribution with gpt support, then I found this thread (and follow the instruction for the usb key), but don't work for me... can you help me..

This is the boot output

Rodrigo Arenas,

Please try again with earlyprintk in bootarg. Hopefully the kernel will give more output:

setenv usb_make_boot_args 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=orion_nand:$(uboot_size)@$(uboot_start)(uboot),$(env_size)@$(env_start)(env),$(kernel_size)@$(kernel_start)(zImage),$(initrd_size)@$(initrd_start)(initrd),32m@0x0(flash) earlyprintk=serial'

setenv load_initrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv usb_boot 'usb start; run load_uimage; run load_initrd; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run usb_make_boot_args ; run usb_boot; reset'
boot

And post the serial log here like you did above.

roarenas,

This is the problem. All other errors most likely are related to this.

The Iomega stock u-boot seems to be lacking in handling reallocation of images. In the Iomega EZ thread, the following addresses were used successfully:

Quote

0x40000 for /boot/uImage
0x2100000 for /boot/uInitrd

So try this revised envs:

setenv usb_make_boot_args 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=orion_nand:$(uboot_size)@$(uboot_start)(uboot),$(env_size)@$(env_start)(env),$(kernel_size)@$(kernel_start)(zImage),$(initrd_size)@$(initrd_start)(initrd),32m@0x0(flash) earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_initrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x40000 /boot/uImage'
setenv usb_boot 'usb start; run load_uimage; run load_initrd; bootm 0x40000 0x2100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run usb_make_boot_args ; run usb_boot; reset'
boot

Did the serial console output stop here? Typing <Return> repeatedly did not give you any prompt?

I tried the return repeatedly and nothing.
For exactly before loading the SCSI.
I really do not know what to do. :(
