ExpressCard-to-USB 3.0 power

I received this in the mail yesterday. Somehow the unit and CD survived one month in the postal system in no more than an envelope...

First of all if you have a spare laptop, getting an Expresscard adapter of some sort can extend/enhance its useful life. My spare laptop is screenless because it was in a car accident before I bought it.

So I plug in the 3 x USB 3.0 card and discovered there's so little power from the laptop's port it wouldn't power a USB mouse to have its light on! Bluetooth yes, USB stick, no. One symptom was, there would be Fresco Logic in the Device Manager list but when you plug something in that listing disappears.

Solution, a USB Y-adapter - one end goes to a USB 2.0 port and grabs some power for the USB 3.0-to-2.5" hard drive. Voila! It powers the other two. Now everything works plugged-in, mouse and USB stick (SanDisk!). What's also weird is that, if I remove the 2.5" hard drive from the Y connection, it still supplies power. Didn't know that.

Remember that USB 3.0-to-Gigabit LAN adapter I got, that's one of them. So this really expanded an old beat-up laptop incredibly. The native laptop has SATA I bus speed and 100mbps ethernet. With this one $9 expresscard hub, any two hard drives copy blinding fast and Gigabit ins and outs as well.

Any thoughts or comments much appreciated.

*due to my on-board hard drive's partitioning scheme (two Win7 primaries, one logical storage and one Ext3 partition) I can't squeeze a swap partition in or maybe I'd install Debian or Mint.
