Pogoplug V3 OXNAS - USB 3.0 on mPCIe - Main thread

I swear the XFCE Mint is much less flaky than Cinnamon, but the ThinClient is 32-bit and that was the only 32-bit on hand.

Let me get three variables knocked out for tomorrow, and try this again. It's rare 5 spare computers can't help, but I'll run personal errands and get a tight ship running tomorrow afternoon hopefully.

OK, I've just tried it.

In Mint, plugged in a brand new 16GB Ultra Fit. And use the menu

Accessories--> USB Stick Formatter.

Formatted it as Ext4 and it came out one partition for the whole disk.

So the question is why does your stick have 2 partitions after you've formatted it?

Hey Joey, bodhi,

Just wanted to pop in and check things out, wow some awesome stuff going on here guys. I've got a new v3 pro still in the box. It's just waiting for me to get some free time!

Back to work (wage slave) and nursing a cold = lots of nap time for me lately. I hope to regain more energy moving forward so I can get involved in this stuff again.

Almost certainly pilot error here but I'll re-do everything on a better machine tomorrow, with Mint XFCE 64-bit.
All I know is, G-Parted formatted Ext4 but wouldn't let me label it. So I labeled it afterwards and apparantly Partition Magic is running amok.

I got over that last month, and right now whole towns nearby have their schools closed this week because of three illnesses at the same time, and that doesn't include all the colds and flu from Spring Break and all the college students bringing sickness home from all corners of the world. Just splurge on orange juice and nap for days. Vape-O-rub on my nose helped a lot and tons of kleenex, lots of eucalyptus cough drops. Just the lowest, meanest, ugliest cold I had in ages.

Hi Jeff,

Yup! Joey made a lot of progress here. I think we are close to verify it working. Kernel spun up the drive, and lsusb showing all good stuff.

Simpler to use the Mint Menu

Accessories--> USB Stick Formatter.

Joey,

When all dust settles, perhaps do a throughput test with the hdparm utility.

Here's where I'm at now:

root@DebianPlug:~# mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
Says it's owned by 999 and won't change read/write. Now the RDP is failing that connection too. Bummer, something's askew.
Again I could be wrong but something is kicking out RDP session as well as knocking the JoeyUSB3 folder off the LAN, which never could overcome Read-only. I'll take a break, try to dig up my UltraFit receipt...

So close, yet so far. I've got to get a few bucks and get up to BestBuy, at least have a 2nd opinion - and no UltraFits this time. :-)

That's what I saw when accessing Pogo using RDP and right-clicking the JoeyUSB3 folder and going down to Properties. It had 999 for each of the different "owners" kind of thing. The Pogo is off at the moment, but I could get a screenshot if you're interested. So the 2nd dropdown of "owner", groups set that to sambashare and try to change from read only to RW and you get that error message.

Don't use RDP at the moment.

Us SSH to login and do everything at command line.

Right, I'd only went there if I knew it was over my head, about to poweroff and looking for any clues.

Cool, made my way to BestBuy and got a SanDisk Ultra 32GB Red stick. This should help.

-update same formatting problems as before when using Pogoplug to format Ext4. At least it's unlikely the USB sticks are so bad.

Is yours setup Bodhi? Let me know if I can be of service.

Those two USB 3.0 sockets, I can tell you this, if you plug a USB tester into one of them it can be of great help. Mine sure has been. It should only monitor power which means it'll light up if the power is properly on. One of the USB-to-Molex adapter cables I got from Malaysia are somewhat poorly connected, and a meter showed where to jiggle the cable right. As well as help me see the connectors on the molex were backwards. If/when this gets figured out, I can solder it nice and permanent. Anyway I'll be nearby.

No luck. I went ahead and I swap the Molex black and yellow wires before plugging it in, it would not start the box at all. Could be the connector is already correct.

Back to the drawer for another day :)

It looks like we don't have enough power. The card must be drawing too much power upon power up.

I'll to try either plugging in after booted, or with a separate power source (such as USB charger) for the USB power connector end.

Wow, the thought of too low power never occurred to me. I'm now trying an eCigarette charger, which is trying to format it again. I notice it never got formatted yesterday, it stayed at SanDisk's own Fat 32 (?).

I'm near the appalling possibility this takes full molex power, meaning 12v too.
Like usual, formatting it's seems to be stuck on:

Sure, that would be better than power it up after.

The eCig adapter didn't make a difference, so now i'm trying one of those Molex adapters that are used to power a 3.5" hard drive, with the 5 and 12v.

Joey,

This is a low level file system software error, not hardware. So your process to partition and format might have been faulty.

At the shell commandline (root@DebianPlug:~#):

umount /media/JoeyUSB3

Then enter fdisk
fdisk /dev/sdb

and then at the > prompt, execute these command: lowercase o to clear all partitions, lowecase n to create new partition

o
n

And then hit <Enter> for the rest of the questions to take default value.

Finally, when no longer any question at the > prompt, execute the last command: lowercase w to accept all changes

w

Proceed to format it

mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

and then sync

sync

Then mount the drive again

mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
mount -o noatime /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3

Nothing works. I have no idea if the unit is bad, or what. It gets to a point I've tried prepping so many ways, including formatting Ext3 instead of Ext4, and now using all four power connectors on the USB 3 unit. The last things I can think of physically would be to put an electrical insulator between the unit and Pogoplug circuit board in case anything is touching metal to metal, or maybe even if those were a 1/2 height like you said, i wonder if the mounting screws are used to also ground with boards.

Back to the page we bought this from, I see three items of interest:

* Internal FDD Power Connector for Supplying +5V Power to the USB Port
* Do NOT support MSATA slot
* Must connect 4pin power while using

Here's some highlight pieces from the last try.

root@DebianPlug:~# mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)
The file /dev/sdb1 does not exist and no size was specified.

mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist

root@DebianPlug:~# mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock
root@DebianPlug:~# umount /media/JoeyUSB3
umount: /media/JoeyUSB3: not mounted

No idea.

I wonder if something about this is set to read-only or something? Do you see evidence Pogo is writing to this at all? It seems to write labels if the directory is locally mounted but maybe a hair off the driver is missing or something.

At this point, the sdb1 partition was not automatically populated. So just reboot

shutdown -r now

Log back into Debian.

And then

fdisk -l /dev/sdb

If you see sdb1 listed like below (xxx are some numbers)

Quote

/dev/sdb1 x xxx xxx xxx xx xxG xx Linux

then go ahead with formating to Ext3

Proceed to format it

mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

and then sync

sync

Then mount the drive again

mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
mount -o noatime /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3

And then check the mount

mount

If it shows the /devsdb1 was mounted at /media/JoeyUSB3, then

cd /media/JoeyUSB3

And copy some files to it.

Re: Pogoplug V3 OXNAS - USB 3.0 on mPCIe - Main thread

This is what I see when rebooting:
root@DebianPlug:~# fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 28.7 GiB, 30752000000 bytes, 60062500 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x2bcdd776

root@DebianPlug:~#
It doesn't have the 1 at the end. So would I format like his?
mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb

-update - tried that and it's writing inode tables atm, one sec :-)

No it may have stopped at 34 out of 230:

root@DebianPlug:~# mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb
mke2fs 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)
Found a dos partition table in /dev/sdb
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
Creating filesystem with 7507812 4k blocks and 1880480 inodes
Filesystem UUID: de13380c-8b12-4fc7-878b-022f3d9063ff
Superblock backups stored on blocks:
        32768, 98304, 163840, 229376, 294912, 819200, 884736, 1605632, 2654208,
        4096000

Allocating group tables: done
Writing inode tables: 34/230

Yeah it's stuck on 34/230 so I'll let it sit here for a while. Pretty cool though to get past the previous issue :-)

-update- tried it again and it appears 27 is the highest number it's reaching.
-update 2- 29 this time.

This last time I put an insulator between the USB 3.0 card and the circuit board of the Pogoplug, in case it was something like that. The only other things that cross my mind are maybe power supply in Pogoplug is anemic, or maybe my swap is incorrectly set because it gets so far before failure. Or the USB 3 unit is damaged or something.

-update 3- This time I formatted it FA32 on the ThinClient and named it: JOEYUSB3

The result of this:
mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
mount -o noatime /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
Is this:
mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock

I didn't find anything useful searching for answers. Mostly Ext3 & Ext4 issues with various kernels, AMD chipsets and things.

Break time.

Re: Pogoplug V3 OXNAS - USB 3.0 on mPCIe - Main thread

Joey,

1. If the disk is high capacity, Ext3 will take a long time.
2. It must be sdb1 (sdb is the whole disk). sdb1 is the partition to be formatted.

mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

Or you can try ext4. Ext4 will be very fast (it only partially formats the partition, and will slowly perform a background task to complete).
mkfs.ext4 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

-----

BTW, my USB-molex black wire got detached (It is a very low quality job of crimping). And the USB 21 pin connector is not that great (very tight). These parts are not something I would trust. I think you need to solder them (instead of molex).

Different strategy this time, back to ThinClient/CinnoMint, use GParted more carefully, format Ext4 and wait.

root@DebianPlug:~# fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Disk /dev/sdb: 28.7 GiB, 30752000000 bytes, 60062500 sectors

root@DebianPlug:~# mount -o noatime /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~# mount
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)

So this is seen on the LAN but you can't copy to it.

As for the lovely Molex parts, me too I changed to a different power supply, the full Molex 5 and 12 volt one you get with a hard drive-to-USB adapter. I'll come back to the cheap molex cables one of these days and make them heavy duty with Dolar Store USB cables and better crimping like you said, and careful epoxy strain relief. For now I no longer trust the ones from Singapore.

So, any quick code to make the Media > JoeyUSB3 folder read and writable? Or does that involve SAMBA yeah it probably does Lol I still have doubts this will write anything. But I'm not touching a thing for now :-)

root@DebianPlug:~# mount

/dev/sdb1 on /media/JoeyUSB3 type ext3 (rw,noatime,data=ordered)

This is great so far!

Now check capacity

df -h

Now just copy some files and measure the time:
cd /media/JoeyUSB3
time cp -a /boot/vmlinu* .
sync
chekck the files sizes
ls -lh vmlinu*

Download a large file (this is the kernel source code):
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v4.x/linux-4.4.54.tar.xz
Check the size:
ls -lh linux-4.4.54.tar.xz
Extract the kernel source code and measure the time
time tar xf linux-4.4.54.tar.xz
