I saw this discussion thread and placed an order for the Seagate Desktop 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200RPM 64MB Cache - 3.5" Internal Kit : STBD3000100 $74 (after the coupon) + sales tax. I hope to pick it up tomorrow. This Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM HD Review indicates the HDD isn't bad at all. I am hoping to replace my Seagate GoFLEX Home 1 TB HDD with this one. With such a spec, I am hoping to be able to maximize the R/W throughput on my Seagate GoFLEX Home over my 1 Gbps private LAN.

BTW, what partition scheme, i.e. old dos or new gpt, would you recommend for this 3 TB HDD?

Also, if anyone can provide the link to install armbian OS on a Seagate GoFLEX Home to its SATA HDD, I certainly will appreciate that.

I picked up the SATA HDD and the label says it is an ST3000DM001 model. Here is the Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM HD Review (model:ST3000DM001) and it looks good to me as a NAS drive on my Seagate GoFLEX Home. Anyway, I plugged it into my removable SATA slot and rebooted my computer. The excerpt (shown below) from an output of dmesg shows the new 3TB SATA HDD as sda which has no partition, yet. An interesting observation shows no Seagate label like the WDC label. Is this because the HDD has not been partitioned?

BTW, my sdb is an old 120GB WDC WD1200JB-00GVA0 and is very slow. The output of the hdparm utility from a 3x successive run. It shows the Timing buffered disk reads is about 54 MBps.

I alway use GPT on anything over 500 GB. As for an Armbian install for the GoFlex home that would take a lot of customization as Armbian currently only supports Arm 7 and Arm 8 architectures and the GoFlex home is Arm 5.

The correct nomenclature is ARMv5, ARMv7, and ARMv8. There is no such thing as ARM 5 architecture.

I'm just familiar enough with Debian and Armbian to identify that all the boards that Armbian supports are either ARMv7 or ARMv8 which are based on either Debiian/Ubuntu armhf or arm64 repository. The kirkwood devices (which the Seagate GoFlex Home is one of) use the Debian/Ubuntu armel repository. Debian documents some of this at https://www.debian.org/ports/arm/ with a key fact below:

"Debian fully supports three ports to different flavours of little-endian ARM hardware:
  • The ARM EABI (armel) port targets a range of older 32-bit ARM devices, particularly those used in NAS hardware and a variety of *plug computers.
  • The newer ARM hard-float (armhf) port supports newer, more powerful 32-bit devices using version 7 of the ARM architecture specification.
  • The 64-bit ARM (arm64) port supports the latest 64-bit ARM-powered devices.

I just got sometimes to create GPT partitions on my 3 TB HDD and use f3 utility to do some R/W on a 2GB partition. It gives me about 179/92 MBps average R/W, respectively. I wonder my Gigabit switch will be able to sustain that throughput when I put it on my Seagate GoFLEX Home unit.
