How LWN is faring in 2025

https://lwn.net/Articles/1019217/

"To put it bluntly: starting around the beginning of March, we have observed a distinct drop in both new subscriptions and renewals. That timing roughly corresponds with the US administration's increasing attacks on the global system of trade and the economic downturn that has been its result. As it stands, this subscription drop does not pose an existential threat to LWN — or to the salaries of its writers — but it is a matter of concern."

"Beyond the immediate situation, there are a number of potential problems to be concerned about. For example, inflation did not stop after our price increase in 2022, with the result that subscription dollars buy significantly less then they once did. We are not considering a price increase at this time but, if the situation worsens, we may have to go there.

For better or worse, LWN is a US-based company, but a large portion of our subscription sales come from outside the country. If the backlash against US companies grows, we are unlikely to escape its effects entirely. Further attacks on global trade could make it more difficult for us to accept payments from outside the country, even when the buyer is willing. In a truly terrible world, there may be attempts to reduce US participation in (and support for) free software; the probability of that seems low, but not zero.

Those are all future worries, though. For now, we will focus on getting through the current economic storms. The good news is that LWN has been here since 1998, which is long enough to have been through more than one difficult cycle. We are still here, thanks entirely to the steady support from you, our readers. Our subscribers, especially, have our gratitude; if you have not yet subscribed to LWN, please consider doing so now."

"Meanwhile our primary focus will remain being worthy of the support you all have given us since the beginning. It is the least we can do for all of you who have made our existence possible for the last 27 years."

https://lwn.net/Articles/1019677/

"On a separate note, for many years I've handed out LWN.net subscriptions as prizes during our closing game at Embedded Linux Conference.
I'll plan to give out a few more than usual this year to help out."

NAS326 Temperature (4 replies)

Hello,

Been a while since my last post. I've got a Zyxel NAS326 still running the Zyxel embedded OS (busybox). I'm not looking to convert it to Debian at this time but I have been working on setting up environmental and performance monitoring. Right now I'm hung up on temperature. The Zyxel web interface is reporting a CPU temperature of 39-41 degrees Celsius. The only sensor I can find is at /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and it's consistently reporting a value of 79000 to 82000, which to my understanding should be interpreted as 79.000 to 82.000 degrees Celsius.

Can anyone with experience help me understand this value? I'm trying to figure out if 1) the web interface is wrong, 2) I should be dividing the value returned by /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp by 2000 instead of 1000, or 3) the only sensor I seem to have access to just isn't the CPU temperature -- though I can't understand why any other temperature in the device would be double what the web interface reports for the CPU.

The device has 2 SSDs installed. Pretty light load, ~10-20% generally.

Thanks for any help.

Kirkwood/ Arm Mass Production Runs (2 replies)

Does anyone know the process for how an Arm-based product is developed and then mass-produced?

I've been researching the PogoPlug ethernet+usb+arm device, and it's really cool that they're something like $20 a pop nowadays. What would you suspect the cost per unit to have been when they first did their production run? I saw a price sticker on one indicating they retailed at $100 originally so maybe there isn't some Kirkland magic going on that puts the board + case at below the cost of most SoC dev boards.

If you were going to go to market with an arm-based product of your own, what would your starting point be that allowed you to develop from day one, but also be easy to go into production with?

I’m looking for a way to install a light cloud/sharing service on my NAS to publish data.
Installation of Nextcloud according to standard instruction goes wrong due to fail to start mariadb server and fail to install a proper version of MySQL which can work on arm architecture.
I find a little old installation toturial of Owncloud 10 . Did someone have a success on NSA325 v2?

What is your favorite site or store for computer parts? When I was inventorying the various computers and laptops around the house I realized that I don’t own anything newer than eight years ago and most are well over ten. I started shopping for parts to upgrade my main workstation (Intel core2 dual with 8Gb – woohoo!) but quickly realized that there aren’t any parts stores in town anymore except Best Buy. Online, I know most people default to Amazon but I’m loathe to give Bezos any more of my money than I absolutely have to. NewEgg also torques me off by showing a good price but then saying they won’t ship it to foreign countries like Hawaii and Alaska. Most of the sites I used to use have gone out of business. I’m hesitant to get serious new hardware from eBay so that just leaves B&H Photo as about the only online store I’d trust.
As a lot of you know, I am not advanced in Linux and don't want to waste experienced people's time (I'm paying it backwards LOL), but any fun lovers out there, maybe this is fun. I suppose Stellarium is already going to break my machine LOL

You're all bright, and previously benefactors here pointed out some wireless chipsets that are known to disconnect from time to time, like Reaktek RT as compared to the more stable options like the one I never received the wireless dongle I'd ordered. I forgot the brand of the good one.

And along comes Wifi6, AX and all that. I'm not up to spec yet but with its power saving abilities it's headed our way. Also you and I are the kind of people who probably run many items electronic without full benefit of shielding, and WiFi 6 looks to connect better through all the clutter. WPA3 needs negotiation too.

Of the choices out there, the dirt cheapest seems to be the HNK TARZAN AX1800, commonly sold for $11 open box including shipping lately; it would seem something needs to be hacked. The low price makes me suspicious but then again the TP-Link AX1800 is reviewed as best budget router by some.

I can't verify a claim made that D-Link firmware is underneath Tarzan's hood (funny).
Any thoughts? Thank you :-)

I have a bunch of Netgear Stora boxes that I no longer use. They are all in good conditions and have all been upgraded to current firmware, including U-Boot 20017.07, Linux kernel 6.1.7 and bodhi's root file system with Debian bullseye. Some of the boxes are booting from HDD and some are booting from an industrial grade USB-stick. I only charge shipping costs. Tell me if you already have a power adapter to save weight.

The performance of the 2009 Netgear Stora as a NAS is a bit poor compared with today's standard, but it is a good candidate for remote backup where the link bandwidth often is the tightest bottleneck. It may also be a good platform for your personal U-Boot, Linux, data acquisition, surveillance or web hosting project.

My Netgear Stora is disconnected since a couple of years, and while I bought the material to perform the flash and I have a basic knowledge, I am not sure I will ever find the time to mess with this. I am wondering if I there would be a way that I would sending the board or the fash chip to anybody from you to receive it flashed.

I recently came across my old Samsung Chromebook (the 1st ARM based Chromebook) that is no longer provided updates to Chrome by Google. Found the Velvet OS project on GitHub that provides Debian and Ubuntu images and a build mechanism for not only older Chromebooks but a variety of other ARM devices. I'm happily running Debian Bullseye with kernel 5.18.1 and will be building my on 6.0 version shortly.
Just thought others might be interested as it gives new life to Chromebooks obsoleted by Google.

pretty cool. Well they are interlinked with Gog and Steam. They seem legit, but all three have different prices. I probably have the Editor's version even though I don't think you could ever make your own faces for the monsters like they promised (and is so I prolly don't have the time).

Steam has one for $15 (abandonware has one for $2.50 but it's 2.5GB and and not 5.5 GB like mine, so if that matters then -edit- I've played 250 hours over time.
Government tensions aside, we (I) wouldn't expect Apple to stop Chinese manufacturing although anything's possible in the current mess. Even so I'm not an apple guy, though M1... oh M1... back on topic...

I'm thinking more like a final order at least for a while, a nicer many-core TV box, maybe something Armbian loves. I don't have the means to order form Ali Express but eBay/China has stuff.
