Boots normally from sata-hdd Debian 10 (buster) inclusive until linux-4.4.201-oxnas-tld-1.bodhi

On linux-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1.bodhi and linux-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1.bodhi - Kernel panic - not syncing

With old linux-dtb-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1 and new DTB tarball linux-dtb-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-2.tar - Kernel panic

Also tried your Rootfs Debian-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 - Kernel panic

Looks like you've made a mis-step during kernel installation.

You should not do Step 4 (you are booting with newer u-boot in the HDD, not with stock u-boot).

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with stock u-boot. Skip this step if you have installed the latest released uboot for OXNAS, or are installing this u-boot at the same time.

Mount your HDD on another Linux box and reverse Step 4:

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.IconBIT
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

And connect it back to the box and boot.

Remember that when you run the direct SATA booting, you have 2 partitions. Your sda2 is your rootfs partition, your sda1 is your boot partition (This is the normal set up for this SATA booting).

So check the 1st partition:

ls -latr /tmp/sda1
ls -latr /tmp/sda/boot

If you see the spl, u-boot, uImage, and uInitrd files here, then every time you install new kernel, you need to copy the uImage, uInitrd, and DTB files from the rootfs /boot to this sda1 partition.

I did not see you doing that in the steps above.

And post the entire boot log here if you cannot boot successfully.

That script was just for the 1st boot.

See that you uImage is old, it needs to be replaced with the new uImage for kernel 4.14 you just generated.

Unless schee's script did more than setting for the first boot, the kernel files need to be where u-boot is (sda1).

And as always, it is best that you post the entire boot log here if you cannot boot successfully. It will be faster to troubleshoot since we are likely in a different time zone.

The uImage in the above boot attempt was not a good uImage. It has the DTB embedded inside. The uImage should be a plain one, which is created by the command:
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x60008000 -e 0x60008000 -n Linux-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1 -d vmlinuz-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1 uImage

So you should recreate this uImage and making sure that you boot with it. That's why I asked to see the new boot log if after doing that and you still cannot boot.

In kernels 4.4.x for ox820-pogoplug-classic.dts there is a command, directly indicating where rootf is located

linux-4.4.89-oxnas-tld-1.patch
+		bootargs = "console=ttyS0,115200n8 root=/dev/sda2 rootfstype=ext4 ubi.mtd=data,512";


In kernels 4.14.x this is not

linux-4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1.patch
+		bootargs = "earlyprintk";


The kernel does not find rootfs in my case, which is the reason for Kernel panic - not syncing

You are doing it the wrong way!

We don't use bootargs inside the DTS. The bootargs should come from the env passed in by u-boot in the commandline.

We are loading DTB from u-boot. And that combines with the bootargs env when the kernel starts. The commandline bootargs must take precedent so that the kernel knows where the rootfs is (i.e. using root=LABEL=rootfs).

Also, the DTS has the bootarg defined to sda2, which does not work in all scenarios. You are basically tied to that and never be able to move your rootfs to a 3rd, 4rd partition, or connecting an eSATA enclosure.

Just regenerate the uImage without the DTB appended to it, and make sure the bootargs is defined in u-boot envs.

One more thing to change:

With that, you can move your rootfs to anywhere in the SATA disk(s) configuration. And seeing early kernel log.

It is because in the bootargs

setenv bootargs 'root=LABEL=rootfs mtdparts=41000000.nand:14m(boot),-(ubi) earlyprintk=serial'
We tell the kernel to look for the rootfs partition with label rootfs. This rootfs could be any where we want.

So put the label on sda2
e2label /dev/sda2 rootfs

sync and reboot.

Ah. You need to load uInitrd to be able to use the labeled rootfs.

I have not got around to send this patch to Neil Armstrong. It's a one-line change which should be in all OX820 DTS files. For this box:

I made a patch (with make clean), it did not affect the result, the MAC is also generated by the kernel. These two patches, one at a time and together, do not affect the bug.

Power up, interrupt serial console and

Log into Debian,

If the disk has 2 partitions then the /boot and /boot/dts above should be listed twice, once for 1st partition where the boot files are, once for 2nd partition where the rootfs is.

And post the entire serial console log (from power up until the last line on the screen) here.
