I know this may seem like getting excited over nothing when you can go out and get a Raspberry Pi 4 that supports 2 displays out of the box.....for $35....however this goal goes back to 7 years ago when scoring a $25 Pogoplug or Dockstar was a steal...............

Anyway,

So I was curious................

Bought a cheap DisplayLink compatible USB 2.0 to DVI adapter. Zettaguard something or the other. Most important thing, it's DisplayLink compatible

Plugged it in to a Dell M300 running 5.5.1-kirkwood-tld-1.

Didn't load any drivers whatsoever.

Presented with a login screen after the boot was done. Monitor reports 1920x1080 p60.

Was completely stoked :)

Now to try to load xwindows on another M300, I don't want to mess up this M300 because it's set up exactly the way I want.

Will report back.

rPi is actually more expensive than that. Add power supply, case, video cable to that and it probably more than $70.

This M300 is using the internal SATA as boot and root. Have a 8821cu compatible combo Wifi / Bluetooth USB dongle that I compiled the driver for. The BT is connected to a BT speaker that I play from Logitech Media Server I have running. And a wireless Microsoft KB and mouse.

Exactly. That has not included a microSD card yet, and one may end up paying more than double. A lot of buyers doesn't seem to be aware of such a hidden fee. For such a budget of US $70, I scored a new Dell Windows10 desktop computer with 4 / 500 GB RAM / SATA HDD under US $70 about three years ago and have been using it since I installed Linux L-ubuntu on it.

Will do. Enabled the MATE gui in tasksel, was 91% completed but it was 100% cpu for over 12 hours compiling the "ca-certificates java" portion of the dpkg. I gave up. This is on a M300 booting from USB. Gonna transfer the image to the SSD but the SSD in this M300 is toast so I gotta fish out a working one.

As they say, it always something :(

I hesitate to post because my memory is so poor, but I recall having the same problem when trying to install java on my M300. I think I let it go for at least 24 hours before giving up. I did get past the ca-certificates problem, but I can't remember how. I think I used an older version of java. In the end whatever I was trying to do that needed java didn't work out and because of my total disdain for java I removed all remnants. So what I'm trying to say is that I think there's more going on than just waiting for it to finish compiling. Please let us know if it does ever finish.

Compiling big job on USB is gonna be slow for sure. Even with a slow SATA disk, it would help quite a bit, because the amount of IO on USB comparing to SATA is significantly different (bufferring).

I haven’t tried a display but have run apps on a dummy display and used them over VNC. I’d suggest starting small...

I’d start by just installing xorg and then see if you can launch xclock. Assuming that works okay try installing a lightweight window manager like icewm. KDE/Gnome/mate/etc might not work very well for this setup but a more lightweight approach might.

Poor choice of words on my part, it's not compiling it's just doing whatever it needs to "Setting up ca-certificates-java (20190405) ...". I guess that involves unpacking some files, moving information around, doing some computing/calculations and alot of disk writes and reads. This is part of the process of loading MATE desktop from Debian tasksel. This package for java I believe this is related to the browser which is part of the whole MATE desktop. IOW, MATE was a poor choice as it's too demanding for the ARM CPU in the M300.

Just got done moving root from the flash drive to the new SSD. Lets see if it completes by tomorrow morning :)

So I did get it working following directions to load LXDE from above but I ran into the same problems with ca-certificates java that I experienced before. I control C'ed out of its configuration during the load process to skip it as it had been running for 12 hours not completing. I believe it's a dependency of libraoffice, everytime I load a libreoffice program it hangs loading until I kill the java certificates process associated with it's loading. The libreoffice programs do load and I can interact with them so I am not sure what the certificates issue impacts. It also loads the default browser. The browser is slow to load anything. Everything else on a default desktop is acceptable to load but this is certainly no speed demon.

Conclusions: It can be done but due to limitations of the video over a USB 2.0 bus, it is best suited to a terminal function. Using a M300, with it's 2.0GHZ processor and 2GB of RAM gives the best chance of success of other USB 2.0 limited plugs but even that it not enough to overcome the limitations imposed by the USB 2.0 connection. I'de be curious to see performance of this setup using a USB 3.0 DisplayLink adapter but do not have a device to do so.

try something lighter that doesn't come with libreoffice like icewm.... unless you were planning on using this for libreoffice that is.

This is true but I got lazy and just used dpkg to load a gui and desktop. I had researched loading a more basic desktop but got overloaded with links, some of them ancient and some of them for other distributions and such. Some time in the future when I feel like screwing with it I will give it another stab but am still happy it works out of the box- as a desktop gui not so much but as a terminal perfectly suitable.

Agreed, or fluxbox (in the old days in this forum we run fluxbox on these 128MB plugs). The performance of such icewm or fluxbox will be great on this box.
