Pogo B03 Hangs on boot - VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6

Posted by BobM
Re-Posted As requested

I have followed your excellent guides to reconfigure my PogoPlug B03 OXNAS [I thought I had bought an EO2 but when it arrived I realised it was a V2 case with a V3 board). I have loaded the latest U-Boot successfully ( U-Boot 2015.10-tld-2 (Oct 21 2017 - 22:00:02 -0700) OXNAS OX820 and have been able to boot openWRT via tftp as well as following the rescue instructions to allow my plug to boot from the original linux partition. In the main, I am using a serial console plugged in to this device but I can access the booted platforms with putty across the network too.

I have tried installing what I believe is the latest Debian from your instructions here

During the boot process, I saw this message sequence

[ 3.780710] hctosys: unable to open rtc device (rtc0)

The last two lines on the serial console before it hangs completely are:

The USB stick is EXT3 formatted 8GB capacity/partition. I blanked the stick and formatted it on a system which uses Zorin. On my last attempt to create the Boot drive, I extracted the files and linked (ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb) using the the new kernel on the Pogoplug B03 via the serial console command prompt.

Anyone got any thoughts on where I should be looking?

Thanks - Bob
Thanks @rayknight

I used the command as requested
# e2label /dev/sdc1
to check the label and it confirmed the EXT partition had been formatted with the correct label (I used gparted to delete all the partition info and create one partition the full size with label rootfs. I also used the e2label command to relabel the partition just in case but got the same problem.

I booted the Pogo B03 from the NAND OS and remounted the stick to check the fstab which was also OK
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#

As requested, here is the complete serial dump of the whole boot sequence:

Please restart and stop the autoboot process by hitting a key. Then at the uboot prompt run 'printenv' and post the output.

Re: Pogo B03 Hangs on boot - VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6

BobM,

There was a mis-step: you should not do Step 4. Step 4 is only when you boot with stock u-boot.

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with stock u-boot. Skip this step if you have installed the latest released uboot for OXNAS, or are installing this u-boot at the same time.

- If you have the Pogo V3 Classic (without Wifi), then the DTB name below should be ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb (see below for the list of OX820 DTBs).

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.orig
cp -a zImage-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -C none -T kernel -a 0x60008000 -e 0x60008000 -n 'Linux-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1' -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

So you need to reverse Step 4. Mount the rootfs on another Linux and assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1,

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync
And umount bring it back to the Pogo and boot.

Doh - schoolboy error - the first few times, I was skipping that step when I was having other problems then got into some sort of autopilot groundhog loop doing it.

The latest config of my Sandisk USB stick is GPT partition table with an EXT4 single partition called rootfs. I copied back the correct uImage as requested by bodhi and this produces a hang at a different point. The new serial dump is below:

The USB stick is currently in the slot nearest the Ethernet cable. I also noticed that there is a NAND error line 3.773071 but I thought the system would just mark that as a bad block.

[ 4.767183] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using oxnas-ehci

Unfortunately, this is the case that I have seen in the past with a USB 3.0 flash drive, even with Sandisk USB 3.0 (The older oxnas-ehci driver was still being improved as each version). I'm guessing yours is a flash USB 3.0 drive? What capacity is this ? (if it is 32GB Ultra Fit then don't use it for rootfs).

Assuming it is not 32GB Ultra Fit.

The quickest way to solve is to use a USB 2.0 flash drive for rootfs. Or connect a USB 3.0 hub, attach this rootfs to the hub. These are to test my theory of the problem.

After you got it booting OK, then update the kernel to linux-4.14.198-oxnas-tld-1. And then try to transition back to USB 3.0 at some point. Currently I'm booting my Pogo Pro with Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 16GB. The only difference is my drive has MBR partition (just a data point, GPT/MBR should not be an issue).

bodhi's corner (buy bodhi a beer)
USB Sticks seem to be the bain of my life with this project! I had lots of problems with USB sticks on my PogoV4 which all seemed to melt away once I got the SDCARD to boot. That's now happily working as a Samba Server with a USB 64GB Ultra Fit for the data.

The stick I am using in the B03 is a SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 16GB. I just put it back to GPT/EXT3 so I could recopy the uboot environment which seemed to have become very random/corrupt when I copied it out for Ray.

I will dig out another stick as I don't have a hub and let you know how I get on.

Thanks - Bob
I don't have a USB hub to hand but I have now tried a SanDisk Cruzer Orbit 16Gb with an EXT3 partition and this stops in the same place. Although I have been formatting all my sticks on a Zorin based machine, I expand the tar file on the Pogo using the original Pogo OS to boot. This allows me to mount any EXT3 partition on my USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 sticks and expand the Debian tar. I also have two other sticks, one Samsung and one unbranded that when mounted, and I start the tar, I get messages like

[ 91.730000] EXT3-fs error (device sda1): ext3_new_block: Allocating block in system zone - blocks from 393666, length 1
[ 91.740000] EXT3-fs error (device sda1): ext3_new_block: Allocating block in system zone - blocks from 393667, length 1

All very frustrating. - Bob

Please post the boot log with SanDisk Cruzer Orbit rootfs. This problem with mounting rootfs could be because of a few different reasons..

Hi Bodhi,

Appreciate your time. The first log is me booting into the onboard OS in NAND, inserting the memory stick, running e2fsck then mounting the drive. The second is after performing a warm reboot (warm or cold seems to make no difference). The hispeed USB device is recognised in both instances but something about the Debian environment on the USB stick seems to be unhappy but I don't know how to drill down further I'm afraid. I did have a quick look at the instructions for how to bring the Kernel up to the latest version - I had to have a few beers to steady myself. is it possible to make the new kernal booted from the NAND Pogo O/S?

BTW - Just tried a USB2 unpowered hub this evening and the system stops in the same place.

Logs below as requested

1. Boot from NAND O/S, Insert Sandisk Cruzer (port nearest ethernet), check and mount

Bob,

2. After warm boot with Cruzer still in port nearest Ethernet. The freeze happens after recognising the high speed USB

I should have caught this earlier! your box is B03, meaning it is the Pogo V3 Classic, without the PCI port for Wif.

So the DTB must be the Classic version.

With USB rootfs attached, Power up, interrupt serial console and

setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb'

and boot

boot

Woohoo - That's cracked it :)

Not sure where I missed that step but thank you very much for spotting it. I have just logged in as root and am now in the process of securing the OS before I remove the serial port and pop the lid back on.

Cheers - Bob
