Open Media Vault OMV NAS326 Samba transfer speeds
November 14, 2020 11:22AM
Hi,

I decided to create this thread to try to find the optimal Samba parameters to achieve maximum read/write speeds when using OMV installed on NAS326.

With the stock firmware I was able to achieve about 105MB/s read/write speeds and with Debian and OMV 5 installed I get around 60MB/s read/write.

Any suggestions?

a lot is down to configuration etc.

take a look at the - now outdated - howto for samba setup and it should give you a few pointers on optimisations.

Thanks for replying. Everything I tried so far didn't change the transfer speed. Do you have any suggestion I could try?

Hi nickba,

If you switched Linux kernel, you may try to run Debian with the old stock kernel. And vice verse. It may not work, but if it one of the two does, at least you know which part of your current firmware to blame.

Thanks for replying.

Sorry for asking, but how can I run Debian with the stock kernel?

No, it will not work properly.

Samba 60 MB/s is not bad.

However, there is more tuning needed in this kernel and rootfs. Things such as turning off network flow control, and tuning Samba parameters.

Thanks for replying. Just tested it. It was already disabled. I enabled it just to test and it got slower. So I set it back to off.

Any other suggestion?
