Debian @ NSA325v2 doesn't work after update
November 26, 2020 11:36AM
Hi guys!
I've been away for a while!
Debian installation worked very well on my NSA325v2 until yesterday!
Yesterday I performed an "apt -y upgrade & shutdown -r now", and my NAS has not appeared on the network anymore.
Root fs is installed onto an usb stick, then I tried to solve the problem running fsck on the disk from my laptop, but nothing; a lot of nodes have been cleaned but the NAS doesn't boot, yet.

You find below the last logs of the system upgrade (dpkg.log).

Furthermore I attached below my last dmesg logs. It's so strange, it seems that dmesg doesn't correspond to the last tried boot (2020-11-26):

Ivan,

First, don't do this.

Quote

"apt -y upgrade & shutdown -r now"

Whenever you upgrade, just run one command
apt -y upgrade
And look at the log and make sure everything is OK before doing reboot. The upgrade might change initramfs (the log will show that was the case) so uInitrd might need to be regenerated.

The error above is a symptom of power supply problem. So check you power supply, and make sure that if it is plugged in a power strip with other devices then nothing would potentially cause too much power fluctuation (the power strip might be of poor quality).

I'm working from home due to COVID, and I need to access data sored on the NAS asap.

If you need the data ASAP, then take out the HDD, connect to another Linux box, mount it and copy the data.

Quote

Root fs is installed onto an usb stick, then I tried to solve the problem running fsck on the disk from my laptop, but nothing; a lot of nodes have been cleaned but the NAS doesn't boot, yet.

You did not say if you have installed new u-boot on this box. If you did, then did you set up netconsole ?

Quote

10. Set up netconsole. It's important to set up neconsole if you don't already have serial console connected. If you have serial console, don't set up netconsole at this moment, because it will interfere with serial console.

=======

The best immediate action to take (other than take out the HDD to copy data) is creating a new rootfs on USB using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2, and try booting with that.

I forgot to say you I'm using your last u-boot.
Anyway I solved recreating a new rootfs with your last distribution and reinstalling all of my old softwares (I hope so).
Now it seems to work well.

Ivan,

The boot log looks very good!

Next time you could keep the old rootfs USB. Boot with the new USB rootfs, and plug the old one in, you might be able to fix it (so don't have to reinstall packages).

Also doing backup for the HDD data is important. If this is indeed a power supply problem, then the problem wil come back eventually. See if you can rearrange the setup so that the NSA325 power source will not be effected by other devices.

After few days I had the same problem, but at the moment I’ve not yet reboot.
It seems that file system has been mounted as read-only.

How can I do?
Thanks a lot.

Ivan

[UPDATE]
I cleaned rootfs using fsck.ext3. At the end reboot is needed, but I can’t reboot before generating uImage and uInitrd; I generated them on the RAID partition, I should be able to get the files by smb and copy on the rootfs usb stick using my Linux laptop, then reboot.
Before shutdown I’ll wait for your comments.

[UPDATE 2]
Today I can't access to the NAS via SSH.

I don't know what's happening; I found out that NAS is correctly running because I can access the Transmission web interface.

[UPDATE 3]
I successfully compiled u-boot tools, now I should be able to run mkimage also on my desktop when necessary.

[UPDATE 4]
I decided to power off the NAS.
I got the rootfs usb stick, run fsck on my linux laptop, mounted it, recreated uImage and uInitrd from my linux laptop, powered on the NAS.
I've the same old issue: NAS doesn't answer to ping, I think it doesn't set the ip address.
I could activate netconsole modifying uEnv.txt, but if the NAS doesn't answer to ping I think netconsole would not work.

Ivan,

Since you've updated your post instead of posting a new one, I cannot tell if you still have problem and need helps or not ( I only read a thread if I see new post indicator).

What is your status now?

The best next step to take is to install serial console. And then observe the serial boot progress to see where it stopped booting.

--------

If for what ever reason you cannot install serial console then it is a little bit harder to troubleshoot.

Create a fresh USB rootfs and boot with it.

If you have also set up netconsole during u-boot installation, and start pinging the box before power up. It should respond to ping during u-boot booting.

Observe the LED behavior, record your observation and post here.

After a few minutes, on another Linux box start pinging debian.local:

ping debian.local
See if there is any response, keep the ping going for at least 5 minutes.

Unfortunately I removed my serial interface after upgrading u-boot and install Debian.
I'm pretty sure I didn't install netconsole when upgrading u-boot. Can I do it now, without using serial console?
However, I booted NAS with a fresh USB rootfs (based on your Debian-5.2.9 image).
How can I recover my last installation?
Could it be possible my rootfs usb is dying? Is it not possible the same issue accurs in abaout 15 days!
Thanks for your precious help.

If you can boot into Debian rootfs, then you can set up netconsole.

Step 10 in u-boot installation

10. Set up netconsole. It's important to set up neconsole if you don't already have serial console connected. If you have serial console, don't set up netconsole at this moment, because it will interfere with serial console.

If you've flashed the default environments in step 8 then activate netconsole with the following envs:

Adjust 192.168.0.xxx and 192.168.0.yyy below to the real numbers in your network configuration. 192.168.0.xxx is this plug IP address, and 192.168.0.yyy is the IP address of the netconsole server where it will monitor the output from the this plug (adjust them to the real values in your own local network settings).

fw_setenv preboot_nc 'setenv nc_ready 0; for pingstat in 1 2 3 4 5; do; sleep 1; if run if_netconsole; then setenv nc_ready 1; fi; done; if test $nc_ready -eq 1; then run start_netconsole; fi'
fw_setenv preboot 'run preboot_nc'
fw_setenv ipaddr '192.168.0.xxx'
fw_setenv serverip '192.168.0.yyy'

If your current rootfs has a lot of setup already done, then you should try to salvage it. Boot with new fresh USB rootfs, and then plug in the current rootfs, fix errors, mount it. And then copy/tar the rootfs to another disk.

If the issue occur again and again with another USB flash drive, then it is most likely a power supply problem.

Re: Debian @ NSA325v2 doesn't work after update

Hello,
ok, I installed may new rootfs on a fresh USB stick.
I found out that in my old USB stick there's not the /etc folder anymore?
I definitely think it was an USB device problem (I hope so!).
However, I configured environment variables for netconsole in u-boot, but I receive nothing on my server.
I'm running CentOS 8 on my laptop and I opened udp port 6666.
When I run nmap on my NAS I see:

root@nsa325v2:/home/user# nmap -sU -p 6666 192.168.1.123
Starting Nmap 7.70 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2020-12-12 15:55 PST
Nmap scan report for 192.168.1.123
Host is up (0.019s latency).

PORT STATE SERVICE
6666/udp closed ircu
MAC Address: 00:1E:64:D8:A7:2F (Intel Corporate)

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.27 seconds

To be sure that I'm correctly opening port, I tried tcp one, and nmap says open.
I don't know what's going on...
It could be port 6666/udp is banned by my firewall because it was used by many virus/trojan.
Maybe change port would be useful.

Ivan

You can post what you did with this instruction

fw_setenv preboot_nc 'setenv nc_ready 0; for pingstat in 1 2 3 4 5; do; sleep 1; if run if_netconsole; then setenv nc_ready 1; fi; done; if test $nc_ready -eq 1; then run start_netconsole; fi'
fw_setenv preboot 'run preboot_nc'
fw_setenv ipaddr '192.168.0.xxx'
fw_setenv serverip '192.168.0.yyy'

And also make sure you run netcat traditional in Centos 8 (I don't know which nc version this distro uses). On Ubuntu, people has to install netcat traditional to make it work.

And u-boot netconsole is default to port 6666, so you have to connect to that port.

Hi bodhi,
I don't know why... Now it works!
I didn't change configuration. To make it works on CentOS 8 only two steps are needed:

1) Open UDP port 6666 on the public zone
[root@NB-user user]# firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=6666/udp
success

2) Run netcat as user
[user@NB-user ~]$ nc -l -u -p 6666

Restarting my NAS I obtained the logs below.

Thanks a lot for help, I hope now needing netconsole at all... :)

Now, what's for:
Unknown command 'mmc' - try 'help'

Maybe I need to change my boot options?
root@NAS:/home/user# fw_printenv | grep mmc
devices=usb ide mmc
init_mmc=mmc rescan
scan_disk=echo running scan_disk ...; scan_done=0; setenv scan_usb "usb start"; setenv scan_ide "ide reset"; setenv scan_mmc "mmc rescan"; for dev in $devices; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo Scan device $dev; run scan_$dev; for disknum in $disks; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo device $dev $disknum:1; if load $dev $disknum:1 $load_uimage_addr /boot/uImage 1; then scan_done=1; echo Found bootable drive on $dev $disknum; setenv device $disknum:1; setenv bootdev $dev; fi; fi; done; fi; done
scan_mmc=mmc rescan
uenv_init_devices=echo Initializing devices...; setenv init_usb "usb start"; setenv init_ide "ide reset"; setenv init_mmc "mmc rescan"; for devtype in $devices; do run init_$devtype; done

Furthermore, just out of curiosity, why are we loading "legacy" kernel image?

Still thanks for help.
Regards!

Yes. The default envs cover all types of devices. This box does not have SD card. So take it out to make it less noisy during boot.

fw_setenv devices 'usb ide'

It means these kernel images are uImage and uInitrd. Later U-boots support a new type of image called FIT image. It provides more functionality than the legacy image. However, the current version works quite well for old boxes such as this NAS, so there is no need to spend more time upgrading to FIT image.
