№ 2 blocked (no access to myverbatim.com)

there is a serial cable

I will be glad to receive your instructions step by step
P.S. I don't know Linux well

Oleg,

This is a Kirkwood box. So it is easy to run Debian on it. If you like to do that (instead of restoring stock OS), then do the steps below.

=====

1. Create a new Debian rootfs on USB:

Using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 from the release thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

2. Plug in this new USB rootfs. Power up, interrupt serial console at count donw, and

printenv
usb reset
help

And post the entire serial console log (you can post this, no need to attach the log file).

Thanks for the quick response!

I read this forum and tried instruction
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

this step is not mine Verbatim MediaShare

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).
which DTB to use?

P.S. It turned out to run Debian Wheezy for Netgear Stora according to this article
https://github.com/kirov/stora-debian-install/blob/master/README.md

Oleg,

> which DTB to use?

Kirkwood box is very similar to one another. The RAM and NAND capacity is important (it could affect the u-boot booting). Your box has 256 MB RAM.

The closest to your box would be the Pogo E02.

/boot/dts/kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb

However, if there is repor tthat the Stora is working for this box, then try that one first.

/boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb

Re: Verbatim MediaShare 47490

Oleg,

That looks good. But I meant using this rootfs (with the kernel 5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 already installed in it):

Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

And in Step 4, create the uImage with /boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb.

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Do not do this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Re: Verbatim MediaShare 47490

At this step

"It turned out to run Debian Wheezy for Netgear Stora according to this article https://github.com/kirov/stora-debian-install/blob/master/README.md";

I gave commands

setenv mainlineLinux yes setenv arcNumber 2743
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb reset; ext2load usb 0 0x200000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0 0x800000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd 'setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=root rootdelay=8; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x200000 0x800000' saveenv
reset

is this the problem?

Oleg,

Those envs settings were not very good.

This is a better example I wrote (I forgot to add to the Wiki, will do so):

Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot

When you are testing booting envs, don't do saveenv.

After booting successfuly a few times, then use saveenv to make it permanent.

I used dts kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb
This is victory?
dts kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb need to try?

Looks great.

Maybe you can try to kwboot with stora's uboot. Bodhi's modern uboot is much better than stock one.

dts kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb need to try?

pogo e02 has no sata, I guess stora's dtb should be better.

Do I need to transfer the download to NAND?

NAND is not big enough to hold the new system.

Oleg,

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,112609,112694#msg-112694

It looks very good. Victory!

Yes, as David said about NAND spae. This box has only 128MB NAND, so it is not enough room. You need to run the rootfs on USB or HDD.

Oleg,

> is not mine Verbatim MediaShare

Since you can boot with the Stora DTB, chance is that Stora u-boot will work too. But test it first by booting the Stora u-boot with UART, using kwboot.

Example:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,51739,51919#msg-51919

Using uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb image.

And then once it boots your current rootfs OK, you'll know the Stora u-boot will be the correct one.

And we can make a new DTS properly for this box Verbatim MediaShare 47490 using the Stora DTS as a base.

Bricked NSA320S during 2017.07 flash

But I'll try
Re: Verbatim MediaShare 47490

That's why you should try kwboot first. If you can kwboot it, you don't need to worry about brick.
Re: Verbatim MediaShare 47490

Oleg,

Always try UART booting with kwboot before doing any thing to u-boot in flash, if possible.

Changing a few envs for booting is OK when you have serial console. But replacing u-boot is quite a significant modification that could brick your box with typos, power outage...

Yes, RAM is the first thing to hang u-boot when the memory size is incorrect.

But the good news is UART booting works! now you know there is a rescue mechanism if things go wrong during flashing.

Try

Quote

uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_e02.mtd0.kwb

and if that does not go far, also try

Quote

uboot.2017.07-tld-1.iconnect.mtd0.kwb

Try kwboot with your mtd0 image.

./kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b verbatim_mtd0.img -p

If it can work, at least we can confirm we have an easy way to recover the box if we accidentally do something wrong.

Yes, it is most likely stock uboot image. Give it a try with kwboot.
