Debian @ NSA325v2 doesn't work after update: Problem reappeared!
January 21, 2021 08:39AM
The issue described here came back also with my new usb flash drive!

Furthermore, now NAS is connected to an UPS to avoid voltage breaks or overshoots.

Using netconsole I found out kernel correctly boots up, but the NAS doesn't answer to ping neither smb or ssh connection work.
Accessing the usb flash by my linux laptop I can see last log.
This is in /var/log/dmesg:

Hi bodhi!
I don’t know if those messages appeared again.
Unfortunately I can’t get SSH access to the NAS, it doesn’t work.
Do you think it could be interesting to re-create the usb rootfs and observe dmesg on runtime?
If yes, should I use another usb stick?
Thanks for help!

Ivan

Yes. It is best to have serial console connected so you can see the kernel mount the rootfs. Often time, it is where the problem occurs.

If you don't have serial console, then cannot really see what's going on after the kernel has booted. If the rootfs mounting has problem, then it will stop booting.

So without serial console, the only thing you can do is to create a new rootfs on USB to get it to boot. And then try figure out what was wrong with the old rootfs.

Ok, I installed Debian on my NSA325v2 after a stock firmware fault recovered using serial console.
I decided to resort serial console again!
Now I forgot the right pins on the board, can sombody help me?
In order to correctly use serial console, do I need to disable netconsole?
Thanks for help.

Ivan

P.S.
Find attached the board picture, and a detail of pins I roughly remember related to the TTL serial interface.
The first on the right should be VCC.

Ok!
I used this post as reference for serial pins header, it works.
Find below the log from serial console:

192.168.1.123 is the IP address of my linux laptop I used for netconsole, now it is powered off.
Note that I first executed fsck on the usb flash drive with my linux laptop and a lot of fix have been made.
I'm pretty sure that if I format the usb stick and re-install a clean rootfs it will work, but I would like to know why the problem always reappear after some days.

Thanks for help.

Yes. systemd strikes again :) it tried to bring in seccomp. I don't have seccomp configured in the kernel (for performance and GPL reason).

You have the uEnv.txt in your /boot folder. And it probably set the option to run systemd.

Loading envs from usb 0...
32 bytes read in 722 ms (0 Bytes/s)
... envs loaded

So remove the uEnv.txt and boot again.

Ivan,

When you have lots of missing shared libraries and lots of segmentation fault like that, the best approach is to recreate the rootfs on USB using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

Ok, I generated a new rootfs. It seems to work, but we did not understand what was the problem.
Now, serial console doesn't work anymore, only netconsole works.
Could it be netconsole and serial console interfere with each other?
How can I know what was the cause of the original issue?
I have to know if I can solve definetly substituting the power supply or not.
Thanks for help.

Ivan,

Yes. Don't set up netconsole when you have serial console.

That's for you to find out. The symptom is pointing to power sypply, as far as I can tell and make an educated guess.

To make sure you see if it is indeed a power problem, you need to measure the power output using a multimeter. And make sure you see the voltage and amp necessary for the NSA325 according to the specs (it is on the wall power unit).

Perfect! I will use a multimeter to observe the power output.
How can smoothly disable netconsole?
Thanks for help, yet! :)

Netconsole keep silcence resetting the preboot variable.
Now serial console works like a charm and it seems the NAS boot up correctly.

I noticed a "low voltage" warning probably due to the mainboard battery; could it cause my original issue?
Thanks a lot.

Ivan,

It looks good!

The RTC low voltage is not a problem. It just mean the battery is almost end of life and it should be replaced. However, it is not critical. Without replacing the battery, you can also install and run fake-hwclock to keep the clock updated each time you shutdown or reboot. The rest of the time, ntp will adjust the clock automatically.

Now you just need to monitor the dmesg log to see if the problem occurs again.

Sometime little things are easy to overlook. Such as if the power supply is plugged into a cheap power strip (instead of the wall), and many other devices are also plugged into that power strip, it could cause some problem. So to eliminate other potential problem, try plug in this box power cord directly to the wall if you can. And then see if you can run it that way for a long time without seeing the problem.

Ok bodhi!
Now the NAS is directly connected through an UPS. That should be the best work condition.
I will take care of dmesg logs. Furthermore, I finally decided to get out the wires for serial console.
Thanks a lot for help!

Ivan
