Bricked Seagate GoFlex?
March 16, 2013 05:27PM
I tried installing Debian through the instructions here: http://projects.doozan.com/debian/

At the end of the script, I think there was an error with /dev/sda1. I'm not sure, but I think it may have been because I had the hard drive in it, but I thought I was supposed to. In any case, it looked it was still fine to me, since that was the only error, and I rebooted. After the reboot, the green LED flashes a little, and then it changes to amber and flashes amber only nonstop.

I tried the following:
1) The hard drive in the dock with the usb drive
2) the usb drive without the hard drive
3) Arch Linux untarred in the USB drive

None of these work. I am semi-noob to Linux, so I am not sure at all what the problem is with the system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove all drives and see if you can boot back into Pogo OS.

I tried that, and it just blinks green then amber.

I also tried the instructions here: http://support.goflexhome.hipserv.com/en/reflash/index.html
This is to reflash the stock Seagate Firmware back onto the base, but even that doesn't work.

When you tried to untar Arch on a USB drive, did you make sure that you were root, or sudo root? If you want to run Arch, I would try that again.

If you want to run Debian, then try davy's NSA320 rooft:

It seems you got pass the uBoot installation without problem. Either rootfs should work on a USB thumb. I would use the thumb drive to install first, and worry about cloning to an HDD later.

I tried it again after you said, and somehow it works. I used Arch to just restore it completely to stock. I'm going to try these again: http://projects.doozan.com/debian/

But can you tell me why, when I try to unmount the hard drive while following these instructions, it tells me I can't? It constantly says resources busy or something like that.

Perhaps you were currently on the disk directory so it refuses to unmount. Change to / first:
cd /
sync
umount ....

Hi

I assume you have a GoFlexHome because of the link you put in your second post.

If you ever want to go back to the stock firmware have a look at this:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,8416,8418#msg-8418

I f***ed up mine with installing Arch first and then trying to put debian on it with Jeffs Script fpr installing squeeze, so that no original parts of the seagate-firmware were present. But I managed to put the original one on it and was able to install the 'new uBoot with support for goflexhome ArcNumber' and davygravy's 3.3.2-kirkwood-dg-Kernel. With Vlad's instructions and a vbox running debian on my PC I was able to put debian on a USB-Stick wich works fine on my GoFlexHome.

I did not put it on the SATA Drive, because I wanted it to spin down when I don't use it.

Well I've currently followed the instructions here:
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5/seagate-goflex-home

I have Arch running on my GoFlex, but I would much rather use Debian, simply because I prefer Debian/Ubuntu based Linux (much easier to use in my opinion). Any ideas how to progress? I could go back to stock, and then follow the instructions here: http://projects.doozan.com/debian/
But those instructions fail ALL the time. It cannot run the debbootstrap.

Not sure where to go from here.

Hi!

The only way that worked for me was to follow Vlad's instructions for creating a bootable USB-Stick. There's one thing that I did different, the kernel that I used was the one by Davygravy.

After reverting my GoflexHome to Original Seagate Firmware, I had to update uBoot to be able to boot the Stick. I did it as described here.

I tried to run Jeff's Script for installing wheezy on my GoFlexNet (I have both - net and home) about half a year ago, but it didn't work - the script didn't run completely.
