Linux Kernel 6.7.5 Kirkwood package and Debian rootfs

Posted by bodhi
Hello,

i am using a Pogoplug E02 with the Uboot from 2012 and after upgrade to Kernel 3.18.5 the LED is not working anymore.

Mike@Webserver:~$ ls -lR /sys/class/leds
/sys/class/leds:
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:47 status:green:health -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:green:health
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:47 status:orange:fault -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:orange:fault
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:left0 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:left0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:left1 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:left1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:left2 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:left2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:left3 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:left3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:right0 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:right0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:right1 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:right1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:right2 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:right2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Feb 22 15:49 status:white:right3 -> ../../devices/gpio-leds/leds/status:white:right3
Mike@Webserver:~$

I add these lines to /etc/rc.local , but after reboot no sucess.

if [ -d /sys/class/leds/status:green:health ]; then
   echo default-on  > /sys/class/leds/status:green:health/trigger
   echo none          > /sys/class/leds/status:orange:fault/trigger
fi

exit 0

Any solution for it?

Thx
Ok,

i solved it. But the Orange LED didnt work. But it is not important.

Mike,

You've used the wrong DTB. Look at your installation notes again. You are running your Pogoplug as the GoFlex Net. Need to create the uImage file using the Pogo E02 DTB.

What command did you use in your attempt to turn on the orange led? And where did you put that in?

Okay, I have a fun one for you...
I have a Pogoplug V4, ran Wheezy on it via the rootfs image and installed to the hard drive (250GB) on the SATA port. went through your steps from the 7th but ended up doing step 4A when I should have done 4B.

now in the serial console, I get this:

so, as my pogoplug is now pretty much a paperweight until this can get resolved, how DO I go about resolving this...? the plug is pretty much my only Armv5 device. aside from this I have a Beaglebone Black... that's about it, and that's Armv7/armhf. setting the machid to ffffffff makes it say OK, Booting the Kernel. BUT. it locks up there.

also, disregard the bad usb errors, that was me unplugging the flash drive I had in to try and boot off it . doesn't work. tries to boot off it, then reboots because something's not correct. but I don't want to boot off the flashdrive, I want to boot off the hard drive.

Re: Linux Kernel 3.18 (FDT) and 3.16 (non-FDT) Kirkwood package and rootfs

@sudos,

Since you want to boot SATA only, and based on your current u-boot envs, you have to use a rootfs that has the DTB file embedded inside uImage.

- With the HDD attached, no USB.
- Boot and interrupt serial console, and then:

seteenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_sata; reset'

and then
boot

Once you've booted into Debian, set it permanently:
fw_seteenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_sata; reset'

Rootfs Debian-3.18.5-kirkwood-tld-1 was uploaded. Please see 1st post for download link.

This rootfs is the first Debian jessie rootfs in my Kirkwood kernel/rootfs release series, and to keep in sync with kernel Linux-3.18.5-kirkwood-tld-1.

Thank you for this as usual!

Quick question, does samba default to samba4 on jessie?

Yes it does. Some adjustment was needed in smb.conf options and syntax.

Hello.

I have a Pogoplug E02, ran jessie on it via the Debian-3.18.5-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 and installed to the USB flash drive.
And I connected external USB 3.0 HDD drive to the Pogoplug E02 but it didn't boot up.

Now in the serial console, I get this:

isevewel,

Yes. Because you're booting with multiple USB drives. Rootfs must be identified correctly as described here:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,19093

Especially section B (Mounting rootfs in multi-drive configuration).

THANKS! that helped a bunch, forgot to reply back. I ended up wiping and re-flashing U-Boot with the 2014-07 build as I previously did and re-set it to properly only boot from SATA and THEN USB in case something goes horribly wrong and my disk dies for whatever reason (it IS an old drive, I have a WD Black 160 on RMA I'm hoping WD will replace with a 500 as they don't make 2.5" black 160's anymore, so I can get a much needed storage upgrade since the original disk in the x86 box this is replacing was 320GB.) That's gonna be a fun dd session, lemmetellya.

Now for the next question: I was unfortunate enough to not see the updates initially when I first got the system going, and ended up installing the 3.14 rootfs/kernel from the qnology blog as most other people have. I've already set this system up the way I wanted, but I want to know if it's correctly the same case to edit using step 4b to update to kernel 3.18.5 for 3.14, or if this step only applies to 3.16? I'm going to make an educated guess that it is, but I don't want to accidentally screw the system up royally from booting like I did last time.

Also sort-of unrelated but probably something to look at since it's happening, but kernel 4.0 is now in RC stages, it seems. I'm not sure if I should be excited or not since I'm heavily unaware of changes between 3.1x and 4 and if there's any changes/improvements over such that apply directly to ARM hardware.

What you're doing here is amazing and I like it a lot. whatever performance improvements I can squeeze out of this thing is 100% A-OK since 128MB of RAM is NOT a lot to work with, and the core has only gone through so little revision since 2007/2008 for improvements. for your hard work and precious time, I thank you heavily.

@sudos,

I just added instructions for upgrading from 3.14 to 3.18 for the Pogoplug V4. Please help me verify it and let me know. Thanks

and I can confirm it sees both flash drives I have on the USB3 ports.
UnrealIRCd is a bit more hesitant to work in terms of connecting (took it a couple minutes before it would actually see the addresses of the two links it's supposed to connect to either one of for fallback) and that probably has something to do with the network config, something I'll have to take a look into later.

But, all in all it works! Thanks a million!

as a final note, it may or may not, depending on if a swap partition was made on a normal hard disk (definitely not flash-based media for obvious wear reasons), be a good idea to have it so /proc/sys/vm/swappiness is set to someplace high up, so to relieve some of the RAM for other allocation. I have it echo'd to 95 right now and it was chugging along nicely with 3.14-- I've noticed less RAM usage with 3.18 as well at boot of around ~10MB less, so that's also a plus.

The way I had mine set up in the past when it was running Arch with a 16-gig flashdrive as the boot medium was to use a swap partition on the entirety of a 2GB SD card I had no care for, and have it set to nofail in /etc/fstab so if it failed to mount it didn't error out and halt the system boot. I have it set the same way with the spinning hard disk now, but with a swap partiton on-disk to free up the SD card slot. this may change and I may go back to the old way once I dd the system to the new replacement hard drive, delete the swap partition on that and expand the rootfs partition out to the end of the partitionable space. the thing is going to be sitting idle most of its life ahead with only UnrealIRCd, nginx with php5-fpm and a copy of irssi inside a byobu'd tmux session running 24/7 so I don't expect swap to be used much, just on occasion the website is accessed and anything PHP is parsed (mostly the linfo page.)

again, thanks!

Yes, it is. These steps can be applied the same to any kernel release version. So after step 3, go to 4b like you did before. You only need to worry about impact when you do dist-upgrade, which will drastically change the rootfs, and need to be applied carefully with preplan.

And kernel 4.0 indeed has some improvements that are relevant to ARM, so I plan to go straight to that and skip 3.19.

dist-upgrading to Jessie, you mean? Probably won't happen until half a year into it being switched from testing/rc to stable and anything found really wrong that made it past the current freeze is updated-- did this last time with squeeze to wheezy on the x86/64 box, no problems... same went for lenny to squeeze before that. it's just the cruft that ends up being left behind in some spots that causes problems with such a massive upgrade like that.

much win will be had that day. I look forward to that.

I just did it and it went smoothly following the instructions verbatim. It did take a little while longer (I think) for my Mobile to come back online after the upgrade / reboot but other than that no problems at all.

Dear bodhi,

I replaced the wireless card in the iConnect for Atheros 9287. However the kernel does not seem to recognise it. The card works well under Windows if I put in my notebook.
Please help me enable the card if you can.

Re: Linux Kernel 3.18 (FDT) and 3.16 (non-FDT) Kirkwood package and rootfs

Hello,

maybe I overlooked an solution but I wasn't successful to find any hint.

I installed wheezy on a NSA325-v2 (lvm on LUKS on RAID-1) using

Debian-3.17.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
md5: fae6cfbec8c58da0066af1041cf89f2a

The box has been flashed with

uboot.2013.10-tld-1.nsa325.bodhi.tar
md5: ae163289cb6a5db6bb897c0b96d5264a

Finally I replaced the kernel with

linux-3.18.5-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
md5: 68c96df62427c69bc7599ff31859b9b4

Everything was running fine.

After upgrading to jessie via

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

the box started again and is functioning like before except the
ethernet link is flapping.

Is there any experience how to get this solved ?

Thanks in advance!

Joe
Bodhi,

Does your kernel support TUN/TAP for using things like OpenVPN and N2N? I compiled a copy last night and everything seems OK but I am getting no connection.

Yes. It does have TUN in kernel config.

@jfp,

I have not seen this problem on my boxes. Are you running systemd? try switch back to sysvinit to see if it makes any difference.

Yeah I see that now that I am home and looking at it. I have a very interesting problem that I am very deep into right now. I'm not sure exactly what's to blame, but maybe you know or can jog my memory.

I am using the N2N project to create a mesh network. Basically, it uses the OpenVPN idea, but in a peer to peer way instead of server to client. I have 8 machines all running N2N, and each one can connect to each other when the N2N service is up and configured. I have several raspberry pi deployed in this way, with external hard drives, for offsite storage.

I followed the exact same steps I do for the RPi (which includes compiling the N2N binaries from source), and everything works fine. The main tracker even sees the registration when I bring the kirkwood node online. The problem is that I cannot ping or get any kind of ssh/ft/etc access to the kirkwood box's mesh IP address, and it cannot get any traffic to any other IP addresses on the mesh.

But....it can arping the other members of the mesh, and they can arping it.

I've spent an hour comparing modules and config variables from raspbian to your rootfs, trying to find out why its doing this, and I'm about to smash my table~

I assume the same thing would happen to someone trying to setup an OpenVPN node, pings fail but arps work, and the server would see the client but can't contact it.

This is obviously a linux issue, not particular to this device, Debian, etc. It has the slight possibility of having something to do with the kernel, which is the only reason I even mention it here.

Did you setup properly iptables?

Just want to let you know I have pogoplug setup with OpenVPN with Tun & TAP and both servers work fine. The error is definitely on your end. Double check your iptables rules.

@tanya,

It does not seem that your card was recognized at all. Try reinsert it again. Usually, even if the kernel does not have module supports, the card would appear on the list when you do lspci.

For example, for the iConnect stock Wifi card:
