[NSA310S] Boot Debian USB + Boot ZyxelOS NAND?

Posted by ianco
Hello everyone! I have Zyxel NSA310S and I would like to be able to boot Debian from USB and start ZyxelOS when the USB flash drive is not inserted. I have read the 2 guides on Debian and Uboot but I can only boot Debian USB and went back to Uboot Stock. How do you recommend me to set it up? I am connected to the nas via Serial. A big thank you to bodhi!

My envs:

I've not tried to make this work, so atm it is not possible to boot stock OS from the new u-boot. If you want to boot both stock OS and Debian on USB then you have to stay with stock u-boot.

Thanks for your reply. It is fine for me to keep, how to adapt envs for the purpose? I'm ready to take the tests

This is a list of commands available for my stock Uboot:

ianco,

See this post:

And since you are booting from stock u-boot, the Debian rootfs installation Step 4 is applicable.

Quote
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Do not do this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-nsa310s.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

If your Linux box does not have mkimage, then install it

apt-get install u-boot-tools

Thanks for the reply. I had tried this procedure before but it didn't work. I tried again with 2 different usb drives but does not boot from USB, boot from NAND, here are the commands I ran, no terminal errors:

sudo -s
mkfs.ext3 -F -L 'rootfs' '/dev/sdb1'
mkdir /media/sdb1
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
tar -xjf /home/ianco/Downloads/Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 -C /media/sdb1/
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-nsa310s.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

I also wanted to try the usbboot command but nothing ...

ianco,

usboot is not good for this purpose.

At this point, do a check like this to see if the partition is good, and you can see the files on /boot folder:

usb part
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

And then if it's all good, go ahead with the setenvs to boot USB rootfs.

Please post the entire serial console log here.

Updated: make sure you use the front USB port.

I noticed that using "usb start" or "usb reset" the device is "seen" as if by default it was not initialized. Could this be it?

The above is good. So go ahead and enter all the setenvs.

And then get a listing of envs, and boot

printenv

So,

These are the envs to set (after you tested with 'usb reset' and can list the files on the USB drive with 'ext2ls'):

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'

setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; if run load_uinitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'

Hello bodhi
I did the tests as you asked me and I encountered this problem:
Unknown command 'if' - try 'help'
Unknown command 'then' - try 'help'
Unknown command 'else' - try 'help'
This command can be used only if enaMonExt is set!
stopping USB..

even setting "setenv enaMonExt yes" I had this problem:
Unknown command 'FSrun' - try 'help'
Unknown command 'FSrun' - try 'help'
Unknown command 'FSrun' - try 'help'
Usage:
fi	- Find value in the memory.
stopping USB..

I did some research. and i found my uboot version of zyxel is incomplete so i changed:
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; if run load_uinitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'

to:
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'

then I had Kernel panic problem "Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)" and then I changed:
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'

to:
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'

and I was finally able to start! keeping this warning during boot: findfs: unable to resolve 'LABEL = rootfs'
But in this way it only starts from USB and not from NAND if I remove the USB pendrive.

so I changed it like this:
setenv nand_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=nand_mtd:0x100000(uboot),0x80000(uboot_env),0x80000(key_store),0x80000(info),0xA00000(etc),0xA00000(kernel_1),0x2FC0000(rootfs1),0xA00000(kernel_2),0x2FC0000(rootfs2) root=/dev/nfs rw init=/init'
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000'
setenv nand_boot 'nand read.e 0x2000000 $(kernel_addr) 0xA00000; bootm 0x2000000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv nand_bootcmd 'run nand_set_bootargs; run nand_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run usb_bootcmd; run nand_bootcmd'
saveenv
boot

and I can boot from both USB and NAND!
I did further research and found a blog (madadmin) discussing NSA320S and its setenvs working perfectly on your rootfs package with the necessary changes:
setenv bootdelay '3'
setenv ipaddr '192.168.1.214'
setenv netmask 255.255.255.0'
setenv serverip '192.168.1.134'
setenv bootargs_console 'console=ttyS0,115200'
setenv bootargs_mtdpartitions 'mtdparts=nand_mtd:0x100000(uboot),0x80000(uboot_env),0x80000(key_store),0x80000(info),0xA00000(etc),0xA00000(kernel_1),0x2FC0000(rootfs1),0xA00000(kernel_2),0x2FC0000(rootfs2)'
setenv init_usb 'mw.l f1010100 1361c000;usb reset'
setenv init_eth 'phyWrite 1 0x16 0x3;phyWrite 1 0x10 0x1017;phyWrite 1 0x11 0x4408;phyWrite 1 0x16 0;phyWrite 1 0x4 0x1e1;phyWrite 1 0x9 0x300;phyWrite 1 0x10 0x3860;phyWrite 1 0x0 0x9140'
setenv init_sata 'mw.l f1010104 c70e0ffd;ide reset'
setenv bootcmd_sata 'setenv bootargs ${bootargs_console} ${bootargs_mtdpartitions} netconsole=6665@${ipaddr}/eth0,6666@${serverip}/ root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial;ext2load ide 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage;ext2load ide 0:1 0xf00000 /boot/uInitrd;bootm 0x800000 0xf00000'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'setenv bootargs ${bootargs_console} ${bootargs_mtdpartitions} root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial netconsole=6665@${ipaddr}/eth0,6666@${serverip}/;ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage;ext2load usb 0:1 0xf00000 /boot/uInitrd;bootm 0x800000 0xf00000'
setenv bootcmd_nand 'setenv bootargs ${bootargs_console} ${bootargs_mtdpartitions} root=/dev/nfs rw init=/init;nand read.e 0x2000000 ${kernel_addr} 0xa00000; bootm 0x2000000'
setenv bootcmd 'run init_eth;run init_usb;run init_sata;run bootcmd_usb;run bootcmd_sata;run bootcmd_nand'
saveenv
boot

So I am able to boot from USB, SATA and NAND and have even activated a light version of netconsole! ("Unfortunately, the U-Boot provided by Zyxel does not include the netconsole option, so we can only see messages from the Linux kernel. However, with a properly reversed U-Boot, you could even use netconsole instead of a serial console.")
I just have to solve the "LABEL=rootfs" problem which is not found even if the label is correctly set, tested with both USB and SATA:

That's good.

Regarding the rootfs, you should keep root=LABEL=rootfs in the bootargs. And make sure your USB parttition was created correctly with the label rootfs. There is no need to use root=/dev/sda1.

The rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 has the root device set to find the LABEL rootfs (in /etc/fstab).

Use the envs set I posted should be enough, don't try any other solution.

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

I don't know why it gave me kernel panic before, now it works!
How could I add reading of /boot/uEnv.txt?
