motion and opening ports Debian Wheezy pogoE02

Hi
having a few problems getting motion running, the daemon is up and running , but ports 8080 & 8081 are closed.
I've loaded iptables , but haven't set up iptables for years, so it start again from scatch :(
There are plenty of Arch blogs on Motion and webcams, but so far googling is failing with Debian.
Is there a ncurses gui or anything for setting up firewall or just getting ports open
Which app by default sets which ports are open ?, its not iptables as thats not in the inital install

Is there a armel deb for web min, which might make things easier ?
Thanks
Richard

Check with "iptables -L -v" and "netstat -a|more". You can check /etc/services for ports. Here is the page for webmin http://www.webmin.com/deb.html . I don't use it, just pretty much command line (I'm old), but I'm sure others here have. You can run motion not as a daemon, and with a higher debug level.

It took me a while to get away from the Village. I was told that I was a number. I replied, I am not a number. I am a free man! http://youtu.be/Sv813f2Xtrg
Anyway, Richard made some inquiries at the NSLU2 forum and it seemed to be appropriate to re-direct him here for proper help.
Regarding the latest problem with ports in use, It might be good to change to other than ports 8080 and 8081 for the webcam and control ports respectively as an experiment and find out what else maybe conflicting.
Bodhi, good work on keeping the Debian V3 Oxnas machines progressing.

Ah beware of big white ballons on the sands of port Merion, where the prisoner was filmed in North Wales.

ports yes gadugadu 8074/tcp
gadugadu 8074/udp
http-alt 8080/tcp
http-alt 8080/udp
sunproxyadmin 8081/tcp
sunproxyadmin 8081/udp

but 7660 is a unlisted gap so I'll try
motion 7660/tcp and see what happens

Dont need utube, I can remeber the original series.

I'm afraid I do too. But hey, the kids may enjoy it.
By the way, DaylanDarby left you a message at the NSLU2-general site.

Changing the ports used to 7660/tcp and 7661/tcp in ect /services.
added directoty /var/run/motion added motion.pid , it seems happy with an empty file to start.
turned local setting in motion.conf to off

I have now a 1 sec sampled noisy frame , I don't think its happy with the webcam.

I'd like to stream continuous video out , so I can see what the incoming vidoe from the web cam is like,
I could do with some help in that area please

Thanks
Richard
----------------------------
Looking closely at the noisy frame , its small, I can see unable to open /dev/video0
running motion -s

I get
[0] Processing thread 0 - config file /etc/motion/motion.conf
[0] Motion 3.2.12 Started
[0] ffmpeg LIBAVCODEC_BUILD 3482368 LIBAVFORMAT_BUILD 3478785

[1] Could not fetch initial image from camera
[1] Motion continues using width and height from config file(s)
[1] Resizing pre_capture buffer to 1 items
[1] Started stream webcam server in port 7661
[1] Raw changes: 0 - changes after 'EedDl': 0 - labels: 0 - noise level: 21
[1] Retrying until successful connection with camera
[1] Failed to open video device /dev/video0: No such file or directory
[1] Raw changes: 0 - changes after 'EedDl': 0 - labels: 0 - noise level: 16

ls -la /dev/video0
ls: cannot access /dev/video0: No such file or directory

Its a USB webcam , would it use /dev/video0 ?

I've never needed to play with video, and on a headless machine its no the easiest place to start.

any assistance appreciated,
Thanks
