Thanks Bodhi for the latest u-boot / Debian to make this possible.

Openwrt provided the dtb / dts (Thanks Ray)

I put these most wanted files in the first post for lazy guys (me included).

Looks like it would be straightforward to boot from usb or sata, and there’s a exposed serial header.

You going to pick one up?

A nice box for 20 USD :) should not be too difficult to boot Debian. Even has serial header pre-installed (i.e. no soldering needed). Only thing is how the u-boot on this box behaves.

If you get this box, try kwboot it with the Sheevaplug or Dreamplug 2017.07 u-boot.

I will get one. Will try to find one 12v power supply with the right plug. The original power supply is 12v 5A. That's normal for two 3.5" HDs and the board...

Cool!

Yeah, there are 2 sizes for the barrel jack plugs.

Support for OpenWrt was added for this device back in August, so there is already an available DTS. See https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=3843c641d83b621e07f03753a5617ab27e55e262

Got it today. Used Seagate Goflex Home adapter since there's no disks attached.

Boot with no disks attached.

Serial output

Will try kwboot later.

David,

Cool :) you're almost there. Let's check the OpenWrt site, as Ray has post above:

Quote
Ray
Support for OpenWrt was added for this device back in August, so there is already an available DTS. See https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=3843c641d83b621e07f03753a5617ab27e55e262

The network problem is typical. It's likely a different LAN chip.

It seems Uboot requires modification to enable the 512MB ;)

There're plenty of cheap devices like these in the US, ex. lots of pogoplugs under $20.
But living in the EU, shipping costs are crazy...
I've been searching something like the dockstar, but most today's cheap SBC lack sata, USB3, pcie, although some have gigabit.
These crappy Allwinner SOCs...2GB RAM, quad core, but null expansion options, only USB 2.0/sdcard?
Not that the board didn't use them, the soc themselves don't have them.

I believe, in the EU you can find many $20 HP Thin Clients (T5325, T5335z) are quite capable, with internal SATA port (iirc ?), and high RAM.

I don't think you can find the Dell Kace M300 in the EU, but that would be extremely low cost for what it provides (SATA port, 2GB RAM, 2GHz).

But these old HW don't have USB 3.0.

Parkytowers Thin Client wiki

As much as I love playing with my bodhi'tized Plugs, I play with other devices and Parkytowers is your friend when it comes to thin clients. Alot of them are available cheap in the EU too. His site is awesome and very comprehensive.

A little progress... Not much. eth0 is up with the c200 dtb from openwrt, but the box was not able to grab an IP address.

Bodhi, help with the dtb file / new uboot..., haha. I can test it.

Grabbed openwrt, let it make world, got one image-kirkwood-c200-v1.dtb, I think this should be the compiled c200 dts.

Put it to the bootdisk's /boot/dts folder. Copied it to replace the old kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb

Hey david,

Why are you kwboot'ing the replacement uboot? Is the factory uboot locked?

Getting it booting on the factory uboot will make it more likely to operate correctly.

David,

That was very good boot! so we've confirmed that the GF Net is closest to this box. And it can be kwboot for recovery pupose.

In this boot, the DTB is different:

loading DTB /boot/dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb ...

<snip>

So did you use a different DTB, or you've changed the GFNet DTS to have new model name?

If you used a different DTB, perhaps from OpenWrt, then please post the DTS source, and the DTB for that.

I still say the Sheevaplug is the closest one to this box (512 MB RAM).

I copied the dtb from openwrt (image-kirkwood-c200-v1.dtb), rename it to kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb and kwboot the c200 box withuboot.2017.07-tld-1.goflexnet.mtd0.kwb so it will load the replaced dtb (name was kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb, actual content was image-kirkwood-c200-v1.dtb)

Here is the dts / dtb file.
Attachments:

I tried to kwboot with the uboot.2017.07-tld-2.sheevaplug.mtd0.kwb with the replaced sheevaplug dtb (actual content was image-kirkwood-c200-v1.dtb). I stopped uboot and did a printenv, this time, the long long long error (at about 10 seconds) did not show up. :P

kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyAMA0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-2.sheevaplug.mtd0.kwb -p

(used Rpi0's hard serial . The usb-ttl I have was a cheapo from eBay and sometimes it jumps back/forth from usb0/usb1)

Indeed sheevaplug uboot is better. Although eth0 was still not able to grab an IP, at least the memory is OK now.

Factory u-boot is very old and the function is very limited

This is expected.

So far so good. But that PHY timed out is also kind of expected. It means we need to find out which PHY address this chip is using. Perhaps it is in the DTS.

This is also expected, this box does not have SD slot.

We need to define the mtdparts env correctly.

Memory is 512MB, as it should be.

This box does not have have USB 3.0. So not sure what PCIe is used for.

OK, NAND is working,

RTC is working.

Now that's interesting. The link is up and ready.

Let me take a look at the DTS.

In the mean time, you should get a listing of the envs in stock. Boot with stock and interrupt u-boot countdown,

printenv

==========

And then kwboot with Sheevaplug u-boot again, interrupt u-boot countdown, and

setenv ethaddr 00:25:25:00:8c:54
boot

See if Ethernet will behave differently during boot. If got no dynamic IP, then bring the link up and down a few times

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

Yes, a different PHY address on this box.
ethphy9: ethernet-phy@9 {
		reg = <9>;
	};

Just found out, with the "correct" dtb, the long error won't show up. The "correct" dtb did this, not the printenv command.

The stock u-boot can not be stopped.... so I can not do this.

I tried to set the correct Mac address in kwboot uboot, but still the same. I also tried ifconfig eth0 down / ifconfig eth0 up several times, still the same.
I disabled ipv6 in systemctl.conf, still it won't be able to grab an IP

Meanwhile, even I set the correct Mac address in kwbooot, when debian system was up, it still shows the default env mac address. (52:xxxx)

Sheevaplug> setenv ethaddr "00:25:25:00:8c:54"

Warning: egiga0 MAC addresses don't match:
Address in SROM is 00:25:25:00:8c:54
Address in environment is 52:3b:20:9c:11:51

I confirmed in uboot with printenv and the ethaddr was 00:25:25:00:8c:54 after setenv

after booting,
root@debian:~# ifconfig
eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

Tried "ifconfig eth0 down" / "ifconfig eth0 up" a few times, still the same.

However, ifdown eth0 showed some interesting info.

ifdown eth0

Still won't be able to grab an IP--it seems system gave it 192.168.7.239 (from "ifdown eth0" but it did not grab it.)

David,

I think you might have another box with the default env for ethaddr in your network.

Trykwboot with the attached new sheevaplug u-boot version.

All the other boxes use their own ethaddr(s). I don't use default ethaddr once it is put into use.

Besides, I was not able to find that ethaddr on my router either.

I will try kwboot with the new uboot tonight.

OK, so the new u-boot is stricter about the PHY, probably takes a long time to time out. How long did you wait?
