wlan0 Interface Not Working on iConnect after Upgrade to Kernel 5.16.5 Kirkwood

Posted by teledog
Just tried to update my iConnect to kernel 5.16.5 from 5.15.5 and it seemed to go fine, except the wlan0 (wifi) interface is not found and of course wifi doesn't work. I tried a "reinstall" and still had the same result.

In the meantime I've reverted back to kernel 5.15.5 and got wlan0 and wifi working again.

Any ideas why kernel 5.16.5 has problems with the iConnect built-in wifi hardware?

teledog,

Please pos the serial boot log if you have it. Or if you don't have serial console, then the output of:

dmesg
ifconfig -a

teledog,

There was no change for this iConnect box in kernel 5.16.5.

You are not booting with uInitrd. The module for Wifi is in the initrd, which is loaded automatically when the kernel detects the device. Is there any reason why you are not booting with uInitrd?

That's what Mijzef alluded to above, i.e. perhaps the Wifi module was not loaded.

=========

You could look at the log for the previous boot with kernel 5.15.5 and see the module being loaded during boot, also see the module in the output of lsmod.

And then try to load it manually when running kernel 5.16.5 (with modprobe).

Not sure why uInitrd is not being used. The bootcmd obviously does not refer to it.

Here is my uBoot env dump that I've been using for years and this worked with wlan0 for kirkwood kernel 5.15.5 and earlier. I've been using these boot args for years on this iConnect and I don't really remember where I got them from. FWIW, I'm booting the iConnect off of a 32GB SLC SD card in a USB card reader.

Is there a change I need to make the the boot args env setting?

Re: wlan0 Interface Not Working on iConnect after Upgrade to Kernel 5.16.5 Kirkwood

The booting method in your box right now is pretty old.

In order to boot with your current rootfs, each time you upgraded kernel, the uImage needed to be copied to the root folder /.

That's not how we boot the roootfs we have here.

But let's not worry about that yet.

=============

To boot with uInitrd, copy the uInitrd in the /boot folder to the root folder (to make it consistent with where uImage is).

Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x00800000 /uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /uIinitrd'

uImage was not currently in the root directory. It only exists in the /boot directory.

I tried copying both uImage and uInitrd into the root directory and not uBoot gets this error:

Bad Magic Number

Doesn't seem to know how to access files in the root directory. Makes me wonder how it ever found uImage in the /boot directory all these years...

Ah! that's yet another wrinkle in this configuration.

What you see in / is not really the rootfs. There is another old style configuration where you'd have 2 partitions. First is the boot partition, and the 2nd is the rootfs.

It seems that's what you have. To see if it is true.

fdisk -l

If I'm guessing correctly, the 1st partition /dev/sda1 is labeled boot and the kernel file uImage is on that partition.

Note that your rootfs is on the 2nd partition (/dev/sda2)

bootargs_console=console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda2 rootdelay=10

So to see what's in the root folder of the boot partition:

mkdir /tmp/sda1
mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/sda1
ls -lart /tmp/sda1

If you see /uImage is listed under /tmp/sda1, then my analysis is correct.

Now you can copy the uInitrd to that root folder
cp -a /boot/uInitrd /tmp/sda1/
After this you'll have both uImage and uInitrd on that / root folder. And can boot with the envs

setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x00800000 /uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /uIinitrd'
setenv bootcmd 'setenv bootargs $(bootargs_console); run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x00800000 0x2100000 ; reset
boot
