Hi,
does anybody know how to Install readonly emdebian on NAND?
Is it the same procedure as dockstar?
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,72

maybe some different memory adress?(needed by mkimage)

can somebody help me or give the result of cat /proc/mtd in a dockstar...

Now,my pogoplug is running archlinux from an usb key...

Thank you!

It is the same. I have one pink pogo and Jeff script works wonderfully!

But you've noticed that the pogo-e02 has only 128MB of flash memory (maybe less if you are using the stock pogo firmware or jeff's rescue system). I removed all mtd partitions except the first (u-boot), and create another two partitions (the first one for a stripped down kernel:3MB) and the last one for the UBIT root filesystem.

If you want more information, just ask and I write some useful tips as soon as I can

Cheers

Hi Pazos,

I'm currently trying to achieve the same thing with a Pogo-plug Pink and would appreciate any notes you have on the process.

Ok!

First of all; Did you hook a serial connection to your pogo device?

It would be a good idea to have serial access before touch anything in nand partition.

Second thing: you must check if Openwrt doesn't suit for you needs. Openwrt is a great piece of software and can fit in 4 - 8MB, leaving free space for all stuff needed. I installed emdebian after trying openwrt. Reasons? My pogo act as a service server and needs a lot of customization; and I understand the inner work of debian better than openwrt's one.

You can also check other alternatives like Angstrom or a stripped down version of armedslack (check for minirootfs); or, If you want to run a few services on your device and you want to learn a lot of things, you could try to use buildroot or openembedded. I've installed buildroot on a friend's dockstar to act as basic sql, php & web server and the whole image size is 52MB (with system utilities to admin the device).

Remember that pogo-e02 has only 123MB (+-150MB using UBIFS) off usable space for all the system data. If you want to install a little distro (like openwrt or angstrom) you can leave untouched the pogo original firmware or jeff's rescue system. If you choose a bigger distro (like emdebian or armedslack) you need to use the whole nand (recreate nand partition table). Distributions like debian or archlinuxarm didn't fit on pogo_e02 unless you mount some system folder on a USB device.

Check all those stuff; then
let's play

Ok, serial connection is up and running. After weighing up space needed I think openWRT might be the one to go for.

Whats my next step? Point me in the right direction!

I have written up the process I went through to create the serial cable for my PogoPlug Pink E-02 at http://www.hack247.co.uk/pogo-plug-pink-serial-connection/

Just in case anyone is looking to do the same

Hi hack247, sorry but I had no time to give you a response!. I just check your post and it is wonderfull, but it seems that you have the original bootloader on your device (at least putty screen shows that). In order to install another linux distro I would recommend you to install jeff bootloader http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/uboot . If you want to install Openwrt this is not neccesary (as seen here: https://wiki.xkyle.com/Install_Openwrt_on_a_Pogoplug) but is the best way if you plan to boot openwrt from nand and, sometimes, another distro from usb.

Openwrt has a guide to install in devices like Dockstar: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/seagate/dockstar | The difficult part is understand how to repartitionate you nand disk: I would suggest OpenWrt FlashLayout 2 and forget about openwrt bootloader cause you've just install jeffs bootloader...
