Heya,

after my DS214 is unbricked, it's time to brick my old DS413J ;) I'm curious how a Debian would perform on it.

The first steps looked quite promising but ... no network, no fun.

[    8.556268][    T1] mv643xx_eth: MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4

[    8.610990][    T1] mv643xx_eth: probe of f1076000.ethernet-controller failed with error -22

Here is the complete log. How could this be fixed?

I used dts/kirkwood-ds411.dtb for building the uImage. That should be compatible with the DS413J.

Look like the DTB for DS411 is incompatible with this DS413J. I'll need to take a look at the DTS.

Also, power up, interrupt serial console countdown and get a listing of envs.

Jan,

2 questions.

1. Does this box have 2 Ethernet ports?

2. Can you request the latest GPL source from Synology? there seems to be some difference between this box and the DS413jv10 (not sure what v10 is about?).

Bodhi,

the box does have 1 Ethernet port.

Following is a log of a standard boot including environment and available uboot help commands. I spotted that they set syno_hw_version=DS413jv10 in the environment and netif_num=1.

I checked that the sources seem to be available. Not the latest as this box is EOL but they are from 2021. But I'm not sure what parts of the source you are exactly looking for. The last time I used a compiler is decades ago and I'm a bit out of practice when it goes that deep ;)

Jan,

With 1 ethernet port, it is eth0. The envs confirmed that. So this kirkwood-ds411.dts is mismatched in that it also specifies eth1. Looks like the ds413jv10 version has 2 ethernet ports.

That's OK. Please post the URL to that GPL sources folder. I'd imagine it will be useful when and if we cannot solve this right away. I only want to see u-boot source code.

I'll do that if we need to!

So first thing is I will compile a new DTB for you to try.

Bodhi,

here is a link to the GPL sources from 06/2020 that seems to contain exactly the stock uboot 3.5.9 that is shown in the log.

GPL sources DS413J build 24922

I will try the new DTS now.

Bodhi,

eth0 still is not found. The error about PIN20 already in use seems to have gone though.

Bodhi,

I wonder why they use regulators-hdd-34 for a box with 4 disk slots in the dts file

kirkwood-ds411.dts

and then define only 3 regulators in kirkwood-synology.dtsi

regulators-hdd-34

It is disk 1 (1st slot from top of the box) that is not detected. I heard about dts just a couple of days before and I'm far away from really understanding them completely but this looks suspiciously. What might happen if we use this instead?

regulators-hdd-30-4

Do you feel that we might fry the hardware if we poke around und maybe use a wrong definition here?

That's why I was thinking about the GPL source. It means there are more differences from the ds411.

kirkwood-synology.dtsi
&mdio {
        status = "okay";

        ethphy0: ethernet-phy@0 {
                device_type = "ethernet-phy";
                reg = <8>;
        };

        ethphy1: ethernet-phy@1 {
                device_type = "ethernet-phy";
                reg = <9>;
        };
};

That's the network PHY address 8.

But the puzzle is it is in the common file dtsi, therefore that seems to indicate all Syno boxes use the same PHY addresses.

Usually if a hard disk was powered on in u-boot, there is no need for regulator (to power it on in Linux). So that must have been the reason. So HDD 1 should be able to spin up in u-boot.

This u-boot is old, therefore use the ide command to test. Insert an HDD to the 1st slot. Shutdown and repeat for other slots.

There is no ide command in this uboot. I watched the boot process. All 4 disks are spun down when I stopped the uboot into command prompt. They remain spun down.

After continuing with bootm, kernel and ramdisk are loaded. This is the moment they were spun up. One after another, beginning with disk 1. If one disk got ready and is shown in the log, then the next was spun up. So this step takes quite some seconds until all 4 are ready.

Jan,

Please post complete dmesg log, so I know which kernel we are looking at. That does not look like latest kernel, is that stock? If it is stock, then it's only good for information about how stock kernel spinning up the HDDs.

Bodhi,

this is stock kernel. I just copied & pasted a part of my post from June 21, 2022 02:54AM where a full boot log with stock is documented. It was only meant to show that the HDDs are started after uboot.

If it helps, I can stuff 4 HDDs in the box and post a dmesg from a stock boot. Will this be helpful?

Ah, OK.

Usually, dmesg won't tell us which GPIO is assigned to be a power up trigger for HDD1. But since I don't know stock kernel, it might be worthwhile to see what the stock boot log is printing out. The kernel is customized by Synology, so they could print out anything that they think useful for troubleshooting.

About the issue with Ethernet. I think if we can find the u-boot source code at that Synology site, it might have some info about Ethernet. In the older Marvell u-boots, phyaddr is usually the variable name for the Ethernet PHY.

Bodhi,

you will find uboot sources here.

The Synology website is not sooo helpful when it's about those older hardware.

Jan,

Not much SATA low level info being logged by stock kernel.

A note about SATA ports. Usually, the 1st two should be from the SoC. The 2nd two should be on the PCI bus.

Ethernet is a bit more interesting. It's the same LAN chip as other 88F6282 SoC boards. Not sure what ifindex is, could be the phy addr in another name. We could try that before searching GPL.

I forgot this. Try in u-boot,

So the address 2 is not the correct one. It was just my wild guess.

That was the result of eth1 node removal.

Hi jhackert,

I'm trying to unbrick my DS413J. Can you explain me how to connect to the console port ? I can't find the way to do it properly.

Thanks !

Hi

Thanks bodhi for your help.

So I'll try to install debian on my DS413J.

I have some knowledge about linux but not in doing from scratch.

I'm trying to understand the original post and I'm asking how we define the number in this command :
Marvell>> setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial
Marvell>> tftpboot 800000 uImage
How do we know we need to put 800000?

Same for this one:
Marvell>> tftpboot 2100000 uInitrd

Do you have link to understand how to make this two files and how do we put inside DTS and DTB ? That I saw in the thread?

Thanks again.

OK I found this link
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

If I'm correct, I'll use the option 4b embedded dts ?
Noob question, I need to do that on another linux ? I'll be able to do it inside my nas after the first debian install, correct?

With stock u-boot, it is just a trial and error mostly, but we also use info from other Armada boxes that have been working. The idea is that those are far apart enough to let u-boot load them safely, and kernel can decompress them safely.

Yes, correct.

You can create the rootfs Debian-5.13.8-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 on any Linux box (as long as you can log in and become root). And then after the box is running in Debian, you can upgrade the kernel to the latest (i.e linux-6.1.8-mvebu-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2).

Yes. That was the latest version. The Ethernet might not work right yet. So log in to Debian with serial console and see if you can ping the router.
