Problem booting debian rootfs on pogoplug-pro
October 08, 2022 02:38AM
Hello,

trying to run debian on my pogoplug-pro, following this thread i managed to install uBoot. But booting from the usb drive lead to a kernel panic
VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using oxnas-ehci
1f00 14336 mtdblock0
 (driver?)
1f01 116736 mtdblock1
  (driver?)
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Did i missed a step flashing uBoot or is something wrong with my usb device ?
Any hint pointing me in the right direction is much appriciated.

Most likely, you did not name your root file system "rootfs".

Mount it to another linux box, suppose that partition is /dev/sdb1, then do

sudo tune2fs -L rootfs /dev/sdb1

sync; umount, remove usb, replug to pogopro, then try to boot pogopro again.

the label is correct:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo lsblk -fp /dev/sdc
NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
/dev/sdc

Is it traditional MBR partition or GPT? GPT is not supported in this u-boot yet.

dsg,

Looks like either of these 2 problems.

1. You had a mis-step while creating the rootfs. Step 4 should not be done while booting with the new u-boot (U-Boot 2015.10-tld-2).

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with stock u-boot. Skip this step if you have installed the latest released uboot for OXNAS, or are installing this u-boot at the same time.

- If you have the Pogo V3 Classic (without Wifi), then the DTB name below should be ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb (see below for the list of OX820 DTBs).

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.orig
cp -a zImage-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -C none -T kernel -a 0x60008000 -e 0x60008000 -n 'Linux-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1' -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

In this case, you need to restore the original uImage. Mount the rootfs on another Linux box. And assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

OR

2. Your u-boot envs were not set correctly. To fix the envs, boot again with serial console. Interrupt u-boot at count down

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

and get the listing of envs so I can see what's wrong.

printenv

looks like the embeded dtb problem.

@bodhi
Yes indeed, i did step 4 and that was the issue.
Now wiped the USB drive, and repeat every step, skipping step 4 and it is running!
Thank you very much!

dsg,

Usually, MBR is more common and should be a given that it is supported (there are many old u-boot don't support GPT). But my released u-boot supports both.

Sometime you just need to wiple and recreate the partition using fdisk, and it will be OK with MBR partition table.

Did some tries and yes, both working.
Seems that ext4 did not work for me, but ext3 does. I did some tries and could reproduce it.

Thanks for the help and all the work you did !
