TFTP on Pogoplug-B01
October 18, 2022 11:51AM
I got a Pogoplug off EBay, but it's the B01 model (Pogoplug Classic) with the PLX Technology CPU. I tried to boot it with the Pogo-E02 kernel via TFTP, but it got a "bad magic number" error. The Pogo_e02.dtb was attached to the end of the uImage.

Is there a better uImage I should be using?

This is the stock uboot (1.1.2) environment:

CE>> printenv
bootcmd=run boot_nand
bootdelay=2
baudrate=115200
autoload=n
netmask=255.255.0.0
bootfile="uImage"
kernflmode=s
load_nand=nboot 60500000 0 200000
load_nand2=nboot 60500000 0 800000
boot=bootm 60500000
boot_nand=run load_nand boot || run load_nand2 boot
ethaddr=00:25:31:02:AE:5A
cesvcid=<redacted>
ceboardver=PPV3
serverip=192.168.1.20
ipaddr=192.168.1.122
stdin=serial
stdout=serial
stderr=serial
bootargs=root=ubi0:rootfs ubi.mtd=2,512 rootfstype=ubifs console=ttyS0,115200 elevator=cfq mac_adr=0x00,0x30,0xe0,0x00,0x00,0x01 mem=128M poweroutage=yes

Thanks, David. I pulled that Oxnas image and loaded it with tftpboot:
CE>> tftpboot 60500000 pogo-b01/uImage
Wait GMAC to reset
Wait for PHY reset

Wait for link to come up...............Link up
Wait for auto-negotiation to complete

Is it possible that you have a variable 'machtype' or something like that with value 1152 in your environment? Try to delete it, or set it to -1.

You need to append the DTB to zImage to boot the new kernel with stock u-boot.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,16044

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with stock u-boot. Skip this step if you have installed the latest released uboot for OXNAS, or are installing this u-boot at the same time.

- If you have the Pogo V3 Classic (without Wifi), then the DTB name below should be ox820-pogoplug-classic.dtb (see below for the list of OX820 DTBs).

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.orig
cp -a zImage-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -C none -T kernel -a 0x60008000 -e 0x60008000 -n 'Linux-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1' -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Yours is Pogo V3 Classic.

Re: TFTP on Pogoplug-B01

Thank you, Bodhi. I was able to tftpboot the uImage with the dtb attached. The root filesystem is on a USB drive, so I have a hybrid TFTP/USB debian system running now. These are the env vars and run command I used, by the way:

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10'
setenv ipaddr '192.168.1.59'
setenv serverip '192.168.1.20'
setenv uimage_addr '60500000'
setenv tftp_boot 'bootm $uimage_addr'
setenv tftp_load_uimage 'tftpboot $uimage_addr pogo-b01/boot/uImage'
setenv bootcmd_tftp 'run usb_set_bootargs; run tftp_load_uimage; run tftp_boot'
setenv tftp_bootcmd 'run bootcmd_tftp'
run tftp_bootcmd

As the root filesystem is too big to live in 128MB, I decided to just keep it all on the USB drive, so I tried to flash the new uboot, but received this message:

root@pinkpogo-b01:~# /usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0x0 6
flash_erase: error!: /dev/mtd0
             error 13 (Permission denied)

Do I have to do this from a serial connection?

wirelessben,

> Do I have to do this from a serial connection?

No, you don't have to. The reason it was protected because the lack of envs setup during booting with stock u-boot. Add the mtdparts to bootargs.

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=41000000.nand:14m(boot),-(data)'
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 $mtdparts rootdelay=10'

And boot and log in.

===========

Note that the flashing instruction said this.

Quote

1. uBoot envs config and mtd partitions must be defined as followed in your rootfs
cat /etc/fw_env.config

# pogoplug v3
/dev/mtd0 0x00100000 0x20000 0x20000

cat /proc/mtd

dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00e00000 00020000 "boot"
mtd1: 07200000 00020000 "data"

So just follow the installation instruction from step 1 again.

I still get the error after setting those envs via serial connection:
root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config

mtd1: 07200000 00020000 "data"
root@debian:~# /usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0x0 6

Ah, the 4.14.180 rootfs still have the mtd0 protected.

Download the kernel package 4.14.198.

wirelessben,

Power up, interupt serial console, and

printenv
boot

And post the entire serial console log here.

daviddyer had it right. Just use the original uImage without the dtb attached. Thanks, David. All respect and thanks to Bodhi for all his comments.
root@pogoplug-b01:~# uname -a
Linux pogoplug-b01 4.14.198-oxnas-tld-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Sep 20 22:15:05 PDT 2020 armv6l GNU/Linux
id.

Also, my pogoplug classic could not boot from an ext4 thumb drive. When I copied that whole filesystem to an ext3 formatted drive, everything worked.

I'm still looking for an all TFTP solution, just because I love network booting. Alas, Tinycore only has a Raspberry Pi build.

NFS

NFS - HowTo set up NFS shares (and boot NFS rootfs)

The tutorial is for booting NFS rootfs for Kirkwood boxes. It should be similar for OXNAS boxes.

Note: These Kikwood and OXNAS u-boot versions are quite different, so the NFS driver behavior might not be the same. Also, older u-boots only support NFS V2 (and V3), so the NFS share should be V3.
