Change openWRT to debian on STORA
November 09, 2022 03:35PM
Hello.
I have a STORA MS2000 flashed to OpenWrt.
I want replace OpenWrt to Debian (install to usb stick), but STORA freezes when I try to start install.
Tried:
debian/dists/Debian11.5/main/installer-armel/current/images/kirkwood/netboot/marvell/openrd-base/
debian/dists/Debian9.13/main/installer-armel/20170615/images/kirkwood/netboot/marvell/openrd-base/

Ran the following commands:
setenv mainlineLinux yes

mshak,

I realized you want to run mainline Debian on this box. The Stora is not mainlined so you installed it as an OpenRD box. That could be problematic with peripherals such as USB.

It might be easier to create the rootfs on USB using my rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 here:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Plug it in the Stora, power up and setup in serial console:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,102054,105374#msg-105374

======

You can always run mainline rootfs later, once you can boot my Debian rootfs. Switching to that would take few tweaks in the kernel files location.

Thanks for your instruction.

Not that problem.

Did you do Step 4?

Quote

4. (Stock u-boot only) Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time, or running kwboot with latest u-boot image).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

We are treating the OpenWrt as stock u-boot in this case. So do step 4 with kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb.

Once you get it booted, we will do more adjustment.

Bodhi,
Thank you very much.
I skipped step 4 because 2020 is bigger than 2012 :)

Now completed this step and debian booted.
then performed note1, as indicated in the instructions

and after reboot I got back into openwrt

mshak,

Right! the envs are set to boot with DTB appended, so we have to treat it as old/stockk u-boot. Note that the instruction meant to refer to my released u-boot, which is 2017.

This OpenWrt u-boot is new and I'm sure it supports separate DTB booting but I'm not sure exactly what's in there.

So now you can choose to go further and set it up for dual booting Debian (with the stick plugged in) and OpenWrt (without the stick).

Also, you can try to boot with separate DTB. Do this if you intend to keep using my rootfs. But if you really want to boot Debian mainline then you should keep booting with the DTB embedded in uImage (that's how mainline Debian boot all the Kirkwood boxes).

So post what you want to do next.

Bodhi,

Initially, the idea was to install debian on a flash drive, and try not to touch nand, so that if the flash drive dies, I can temporarily switch to it.
I think Debian mainline is no needed.

I would try dual boot, if that fails then boot with separate DTB with your rootfs

OK, that will make things easier.

Power up, interrupt serial console, and
printenv
help
And post the entire serial console log up until this point.

mshak,

With Debian USB rootfs attached, power up, interrupt serial console and,
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'

setenv bootcmd_debian 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop'
setenv bootcmd_owrt 'setenv bootargs ${console} ${mtdparts} ${bootargs_root}; ubi part ubi; ubifsmount ubi:rootfs; ubi read 0x800000 kernel; bootm 0x800000'
setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_debian; run bootcmd_owrt; reset'

and then

boot
It should boot into Debian.

Repeat the test, without USB rootfs. It should boot into OpenWrt.

It worked great!
Stora booted to debian with usb stick and to openwrt without a stick.

Will the 'saveenv' command be enough to store in persistent storage after setting environment variables?

Yes, but first while in Debian, check for bad blocks

dmesg | grep -i bad

If there is no bad block, go ahead, reboot.

Interrupt serial console and enter all envs as before, and before booting
saveenv
boot

That's OK. Those bad blocks are away from blocks 0 to 7 (where u-boot and envs are located). So go ahead and save the envs.

Re: Change openWRT to debian on STORA

mshak,

Looks like OpenWrt rootfs has some issue. But that's a different story.

Boot into Debian and

dmesg
cat /proc/mtd
apt-get install libubootenv-tool # if you have not done this after first boot
echo "/dev/mtd1 0x0000 0x20000 0x20000" > /etc/fw_env.config
fw_printenv

Re: Change openWRT to debian on STORA
November 12, 2022 03:13PM
mshak,

I forgot to modify the bootargs env:

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'

Please try repeating the test booting Debian again with this adjustment.

Re: Change openWRT to debian on STORA

mshak,

At this point, you should try to kwboot the u-boot image uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb from my relase thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

Use this instruction as a guide how to kwboot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,51739,51919#msg-51919

This is a precaution before you play too much with u-boot envs. It's a rescue path in case the mtd0 and mtd1 are messed up and you can no longer boot. If you can kwboot and run the new u-boot, then we have more confident messing with u-boot and envs.

mshak,

> yes, i tried and kwboot worked

That's all we care to know. Meaning you have a recovery path in case it's bricked for whatever reason.

OK so go back to when you saveenv.

Boot up with USB rootfs, interrupt serial console. And enter the envs like you did.

Netgear Stora> setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
Netgear Stora> setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
Netgear Stora> setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
Netgear Stora> setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
Netgear Stora> setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd_debian 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd_owrt 'setenv bootargs ${console} ${mtdparts} ${bootargs_root}; ubi part ubi; ubifsmount ubi:rootfs; ubi read 0x800000 kernel; bootm 0x800000'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_debian; run bootcmd_owrt; reset'

Here save the envs and print them out.
saveenv
printenv
And then boot into Debian.

cat /proc/mtd

and dump mtd0

cd /tmp
nanddump --noecc --omitoob -f mtd0.owrt.uboot.2020.04.stora  /dev/mtd0

This file should be 1MB. And you can post it here (attach to the new post). I'd like to use hexedit to find where the envs are located. You can do the same too. The envs are very easy to see on the right side.

bodhi,

I dumped and attached mtd0.
I opened it in a hex editor, and as far as I can see, the address of the variables is 0x0005ffde

mshak,

That's the location of the internal envs, not ones in flash.

Please do the same for

nanddump --noecc --omitoob -f mtd1.owrt.uboot.2020.04.stora  /dev/mtd1

Re: Change openWRT to debian on STORA

mshak,

OK the bad news: the envs are not in mtd0 or mtd1.

So what we see here could be just the internal envs. And u-boot can be configured that it will use only the internal envs.

Netgear Stora> printenv
arcNumber=2743
baudrate=115200
bootcmd=setenv bootargs ${console} ${mtdparts} ${bootargs_root}; ubi part ubi; ubifsmount ubi:rootfs; ubi read 0x800000 kernel; bootm 0x800000
bootdelay=2
console=console=ttyS0,115200
ethact=egiga0
ethaddr=52:3b:20:9c:11:51
ipaddr=192.168.0.2
mtdids=nand0=orion_nand
mtdparts=mtdparts=orion_nand:0x180000@0x0(uboot),0x20000@0x180000(uboot_env),-@0x200000(ubi)
serverip=192.168.0.1
stderr=serial
stdin=serial
stdout=serial

Environment size: 454/131068 bytes

I could not find this OpenWrt u-boot in their source tree. So that is my educated guess.

=======================

Perhaps now is the time to flash my relased u-boot and then adjust the envs to boot Debian and OpenWrt.

1. Save these envs so you can rerofit the part about booting OpenWrt to the new u-boot envs
Netgear Stora> setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
Netgear Stora> setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
Netgear Stora> setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
Netgear Stora> setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
Netgear Stora> setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd_debian 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd_owrt 'setenv bootargs ${console} ${mtdparts} ${bootargs_root}; ubi part ubi; ubifsmount ubi:rootfs; ubi read 0x800000 kernel; bootm 0x800000'
Netgear Stora> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_debian; run bootcmd_owrt; reset'

2. Boot into Debian and adjust your USB rootfs so that it has the original uImage

cd /boot
cp -a uImage uImage.stora.dtb
cp -a uImage.orig uImage

3. And install uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110 (both u-boot image and env image) following the instruction.

And reboot.

After that, I'll help to adjust the env so you can dual boot. Note that the mtdparts will be redefined also.

The pull request has not yet been merged by someone with commit access. It likely will not be merged as activity seems to have stopped by the developer back in May and the code will need to be re-based at a minimum.
