Zyxel NAS 325 stuck on uboot 2017 ??

Hello ,guys!

Iam new to this forum but not quite new to experimenting w/hardware ;)
Ive been just in process of 'debianization' on my Zyxel NSA 325, flashed uboot w/kwboot - as per Bodhi's instructions BUT
I have not prepared new kernel/boot files while on default uboot... Therefore looks I am stuck on flashing orange LED, NSA325> prompt w/boot built-in commands, 'usbboot' returns me 'Error 44'. I would be happy if you could give some hint to move on - there is so many threads on this subject so Im kinda lost now. Have eventually no idea what should boot USB be like - 1 or 2 partitions, ext2/ext3 ? What to put there? How to force NAS to usb boot etc ?

Create a new rootfs on USB using Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 from the release thread:

Just plug it in and cycle power, (or type reset if you are at the u-boot prompt) it should boot straigh into the USB rootfs.

Thanks. You mean just one Ext3/labelled 'rootfs'/ partition on USB, w/copied content onto it?

You need to follow the instruction how to create the rootfs. And don't substitute any part with any thing that you think it's equivalent. For example, you must be root, one Ext3 partition, untar to extract,.... The instruction was written in a way that avoids all potential problems.

After you booted with the USB rootfs, you can tweak it a bit. For example, you can use Ext4, and you can install the rootfs on HDD, you can use multiple partitions,.... But the 1st boot should be very easy if the USB rootfs was created exactly as the instruction described.

A little off-top: further described procedure tells to upgrade/amend some files, that requires internet link of course.
Is -at that stage-any other option to make it networked except eth cabling to some router /wifi adapter on Zyxel's usb maybe?/

Before running apt-get, apt-get upgrade, either connect ethernet cable, or USB wifi adapter to get network running.

Successfully achieved kernel 6.0.7 on my 325 v2. ))

Still cant make ethernet interface running...anybody any ideas?

No eth although driver for mv643xx notifyies itself in dmesg.

The envs are not good. Looks messed up! not sure if it is an artifact of how you copy the log or they actually messed up.

hi, Iam working w/screen/PC Arch Linux/ so far but the log does not comprise all the output...;
Btw I did NOT put MAC into new envs but-afaik-you stated it was not necessary at uboot stage.

uBoot recognizes egiga0, kernel loads MV643xx eth port, tried to mess with /etc/network/interfaces but eventually no eth at all
and I can neither make WLAN on rt2800usb - some firmware needed /a bit awkward w/out network access/ ?

If above suceeds-would yuo point me to a thread describing recommended setup for HDD partitions on the NAS?
NAND is too small to have newer kernels /and rootfs/ - I mean if its going to be RAID - it would mean I have to define same rootfs partitions on both disks? How many/swap. home?/ - how big?

Your envs are wrong so that's why you have no network.

Power up, interrupt serial console, and

setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/kirkwood-nsa325.dtb'

and then get a listing of the envs before booting.

Hi, thanks for further explanations.
Ive put proper source into sources.list but it gives abovementioned error anyway. Ive ubstalled also libubootenv-tool etc /noticed that remark earlier/.
Would you advice: should ssh/telnet console or other means be used to communicate with NSA325 after disconnecting serial link? /which has to be removed now-Id like to re-assembly all that stuff eventually and install HDDs ;))
Is there any WEB interface to be installed on debian NAS325 ?

Although xfce vnc does not seem to work through Remmina in ArchLinux-sure needs some tune up., BUT:

Id ask you kindly for some additional hint - I tried to move installation from my primary USB on HDD: boot, rootfs, swap, Data partitions, but does not seem to work afterwards - only orange flashing led..

Moreover-even when starting from USB again I cant obtain SSH link anymore - connection refused.

Time to disassembly the housing&back to serial link or any other option ?

You might have changed the u-boot envs incorrectly. Or the HDD rootfs was not prepared properly.

That's the quickest way to fix it.

However, there is another way of recovery with my u-boot 2017.07: use uEnv.txt capabilty to restore the envs to the default state temporarily during boot. See Wiki thread:

If you have change the HHD partition label to rootfs (expecting to boot from HDD rootfs) then it still might have problem booting. In this case, do this:

relabel the USB rootfs partition (assuming it is /dev/sdb1 on another Linux box that you are using to add uEnv.txt):

e2label /dev/sdb1 usb_rootfs

and then modify this variable in uEnv.txt:

set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=usb_rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts $custom_params

So from now on, as long as the uEnv.txt is in /boot of the USB drive, it will boot only to the USB rootfs. Once you can do that, come back and we'll discuss how to migrate the USB rootfs to HDD.

sda1 - /boot "boot"
sda2 - / "rootfs"
sda3 - swap
sda4 - Data, for further sharing.

As to envs: afair you mentione at uboot stage that hdd is just second boot defined if usb not plugged, anyway?

Correct. So if you have not changed any envs at all, then only the HDD rootfs is suspected to be incorrect.

How did you migrate the USB rootfs to HDD rootfs (i.e tar, cp, dd... ) ? and did you use any of the howtos in the Wiki thread as a guide?

Generally ive followed inverted procedure you described already/excatly as above indicated/: Backup/Restore rootfs using tar command
hdd->usb, i created tar.bz2 image of whole rootsfs then copied as root, only /boot content copied to another/mapped hdd partition/ 'alive'./no udev rules adjusting though/.Btw same way i prepared WORKING usb AND in arch linux i can only 'su -l root' in terminal.

As to a log: if you tell me where to look for it.../i am playing w/arch linux - partly screen, picocom and remmina's ssh plugin/as to remmina sh session did not have logging defined so far afaik/.

What pisses me off is SSH link denial - i ve just removed usb to try hdd boot twice and thats it. After that and pluggin my primary USB again- SSH /whatever type/ refuses connection.

I meant copy/paste what's on the terminal after you are done creating rootfs.

Create a new USB rootfs and boot with it (or wipe the current one if you have not done much on it). New rootfs will have a new SSH key at 1st boot.

hi. Copied renamed uboot-sth.. into Env.txt and onto USB's rootfs, changed kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb into ...._nsa325.dtb and within .dtb as well, still SSH refused after booting.

Just pulled out HDD and booting primary USB and SSH link works...and hot-plugging HDD also maps hdd partitions to /dev/sdb so...would you kindly point me to correct procedure of preparing HDD now ? ;)


Btw. Adjusting LEDS&beeps: in proper *.conf there are already some paragraphs defined although Ive added those referring strictly to .../class/nsa325. Should the others be removed?

Yes, that was because the kernel on USB was used, but the mounted rootfs was still the HDD rootfs. So after you removed the HDD, the USB rootfs was mounted, and everything works.

They are conditionally executed so it does not hurt to leave them just the way it is.

How to clone USB rootfs to SATA rootfs.

1. Backup your current USB rootfs on another Linux box using this backup/restore instruction:

And copy the backup tarball my-rootfs.tar.bz2 to the USB rootfs /boot folder. Sync, umount, and remove this USB rootfs.

2. Boot the box with the USB rootfs.

And then plug in the HDD if it is not already in. From now on, assuming this HDD is detected as /dev/sdb. If it was assigned a different drive letter, then adjust the instruction below where /dev/sdb occurs.

3. Create HDD rootfs partition

Wipe your HDD and create a single Ext3 partition to be the rootfs. Note that you can aslo use Ext4 but only if you are running u-boot-2017.07-tld-1. But you need to make sure to use "no lazy init" option to finalize the the EXT4 partition.

Note: at this point you can partition the HDD into multiple partitions if you want, but the 1st partition must be for the future rootfs, and it must be format as Ext3 (or Ext4).

4. Restore the tarball my-rootfs.tar.bz2 to the 1st partition in the HDD.

Mount the HDD first partition /dev/sdb1, and label it rootfs.

mkdir -p /media/sdb1
mount -o noatime /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
e2label /dev/sdb1 rootfs

Retore the USB rootfs

cd /media/sdb1
time tar -xjf  /boot/my-rootfs.tar.bz2

After it is done, sync a few times

sync
sync

5. Boot with HDD rootfs only

Shutdown the box and remove the USB rootfs. Power up. It should boot into the HDD rootfs exactly as was with USB roots.

Note: keep your USB rootfs as a "rescue" system. It will be handy if you ever have problem booting the HDD rootfs. This USB drive should not be plugged in during boot because it will confuse u-boot (where to find kernel files) and kernel (where to find rootfs). But after booted, you can plug in this USB drive just like a normal data drive.

6. [Optional] Post Install recommendation

You should create a swap file on HDD rootfs (if you had not created a separate swap partition during step 3). Swap file works as well as swap partition and less prone to error/problems.
