OK Chris.

I think since you are booting with a new kernel. You might need to reassamble the RAID array..

See this post:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,130039,130404#msg-130404

And also the link I've mentioned in the post

Very carefully. See posts from Mijzelf and me starting from here:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,129924,129934#msg-129934

If you have valuable data in the RAID array, you need to consider backing them up first. I cannot guarantee that you can keep the data. Usually a mdadm rescan will not touch the data, but you need to take precaution to back up your data first.

=====

So boot with USB rootfs and try the above. And then see if you can mount the HDD rootfs partition in md0. I know you can see them in the boot with old kernel on NAND, but you need to be able to see them while running the new kernel and USB rootfs.

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/ram does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Can you show the log of the boot with USB rootfs and then how you run "mdadm --assemble --scan", and mount the rootfs partition.

Cool!

So it is just a matter of fstab and the label of this rootfs in /mnt/root.

Perhaps somebody is running RAID on their box can chime in to help here? My RAIDfu is rusty, since I'm not running RAID at all for home NAS (I think it is overkilled).

You've missed Step 3.

Quote
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,32146

2. Extract the kernel and the DTB files in the archive:

cd /boot
tar -xjf linux-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
tar -xf linux-dtb-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1.tar

3. And install it with dpkg. Remove flash-kernel first to avoid potential problem (if flash-kernel was not installed then you'll see some error output):

cd /boot
apt-get remove flash-kernel
dpkg -i linux-image-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1_1.0_armhf.deb

4. Create uImage and uInitrd (kernel file initrd.img-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 was generated by dpkg in step 3). I am using the Zyxel NAS326 as an example here. Please replace armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb below with the appropriate DTB name for your box.

A kernel is not installed until you run dpkg (even though you can boot with the kernel zImage, the rootfs does not match the kernel). dpkg populate all kernel files in the rootfs.

you are right!

do I need to copy now the uImage and uInitrd to the stick?

Thanks!

Chris,

If you intend to use the stick as a rescue system then you should install the new kernel on the USB rootfs. Remove the HDD, and boot back to USB, and then do the kernel installation.

If you don't think you would use the USB rootfs at all, then copying the kernel files only would be OK.

As I mentioned

B. Setup rsync to back up a live rootfs to a local USB drive

Once in a while, you can instert the stick while the system is running. And run the rsync.backup.ondemand to backup th HDD rootf to the USB drive. That way you don't need to do any manual step to keep the USB stick in sync with the HDD rootfs.

But I am booting the uImage and uInitrd from the stick.
Can I boot somehow direct from HDD?
It didn't work because uInitrd is too big, no?

and the kernel is on HDD

Yes you can. I forgot that's where you are.

> It didn't work because uInitrd is too big, no?

Not that reason. You have updated u-boot so the initrd size is irrelevant. We need to changes some envs to make it boot HDD rootfs. Also make it boot USB if the HDD rootfs has probem. I'll show you how to do that.

With serial console, power up (or reboot). Interrupt u-boot countdown and,

printenv
Please post the log here.

It boots HDD rotfs but not with RAID
that's why I changed to without RAID instead /dev/sda1

Re: How to install Debian in a WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra: Definitive edition

I see,

boot_debian_usb=usb start; sleep 5; fatload usb 0:1 0x00800000 /boot/uImage; fatload usb 0:1 0x02100000 /boot/uRamdisk; bootm 0x00800000 0x02100000
bootcmd=run set_bootargs_debian; run boot_debian_usb; reset

So you are still booting with the FAT USB drive using fatload.

See this Step 4 in this thread.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,133718,133722#msg-133722

The new u-boot can boot with Ext3 file system.

Quote

Marvell>> ext2load usb 0:1 0x00800000 boot/uImage
5236595 bytes read in 576 ms (8.7 MiB/s)
Marvell>> ext2load usb 0:1 0x02100000 boot/uRamdisk
9649885 bytes read in 736 ms (12.5 MiB/s)

=====

OK now you should create a new rootfs on a new USB stick using Debian-5.13.8-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. Just like you did for the HDD rootfs. You should use Ext3 file system, don't use Ext4.

Plug in the USB roofs, remove the HDD rootfs. Power up, interrupt u-boot countdown and,

setenv boot_debian_usb 'usb start; sleep 5; ext2load usb 0:1 0x00800000 boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x02100000 boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x00800000 0x02100000'
boot

Cool!

> Next step?
> I'm starting to be sleepy, here is 23 ...

Come back tomorrow and try these next steps (before I'll wake up in PST timezone :)

Remove the USB roofs, and plug in the HDD rootfs. Power up, interrupt u-boot countdown and,

ide reset
If the output shows that the HDD is initialized with capacity,... then do,
ext2ls ide 0:1 /boot
If the files are listed correctly then do,
sleep 5; ext2load ide 0:1 0x00800000 boot/uImage; ext2load ide 0:1 0x02100000 boot/uInitrd; bootm 0x00800000 0x02100000'
boot

Failed or successful, please post the entire serial console log (until the Debian login prompt). We are setting an example how to boot with the HDD rootfs here if it is successful.

Re: How to install Debian in a WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra: Definitive edition

Bodhi,
I see you posted a new kernel. Nice.

there is a typing mistake
the kernel name is:
linux-image-6.3.5-mvebu-tld-1_1_armhf.deb

and the dpkg
dpkg -i linux-image-6.3.5-mvebu-tld-1_1.0_armhf.deb
has a .0 too much

i think this is the right one
dpkg -i linux-image-6.3.5-mvebu-tld-1_1_armhf.deb
or the kernel needs it?

How about:

or if scsi reset failed:
scsi init
