Netgear Stora - Debian rootfs questions
January 04, 2023 06:12AM
So I managed to pickup an old Netgear Stora from ebay for £30, thought it was worth having a play with.

I had the old uboot on the device but had a serial console. I stupidly used the "resetenv" command and ended up with loads of errors but following other posts I was able to chain load another uboot from an ext2 usb drive (3.4.16 I think it was), mine was the buggy 3.4.14 version.
Anyway thats all fixed, I was able to boot into the rootfs image and flash the newest uboot. Thats now all working.

I tried to follow the guide to update the kernel, but it wont boot, this is the error.

Please check your kernel config and/or bootloader.

So I have reverted back to my old backup files which now boots fine again.

My questions are, can you explain why the new kernel didnt work? I thought the uboot I flashed had FTD support.
Secondly, is it possible to boot this from a hard drive installed in the box? I havent put any drives in yet, just running the usb stick for now. My aim is to run either 2 x 8TB or 2 x 10TB from it.

Here is the full boot log from the working usb stick (Its ext2 due to the really old uboot i started with)

Re: Netgear Stora - Debian rootfs questions
January 04, 2023 09:37AM
Answered my own question about transferring it to a drive. Thats done. added a brand new 8TB and created a 250GB partition, copied the files over from a tar I created. Just making my swap file now. Boots much faster from sata. Created a 2nd ext4 partition for my storage space and shared via samba, all fine. :)

Just wondering about updating the kernel, now, but its working nice so I may just leave it.
Re: Netgear Stora - Debian rootfs questions

spaceballz,

You've missed an important env in running new kernel: dtb_file.

You can set it either temporarily using uEnv.txt (see u-boot 2017.07 installation instruction). Or set it permanently

fw_setenv dtb_file /boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb
When you boot the new kernel, make sure that the uImage is the original one (no DTB appended to it). This is because u-boot will load the DTB separately (using the env dtb_file)

Currently you are booting kernel 5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 with the DTB appended to uImage. The reason it booted OK was because you don't have dtb_file defined.

If you have booted with stock u-boot the uImage with DTB appended was necessary, but for new u-boot it's best to boot with separate DTB and original uImage.

Re: Netgear Stora - Debian rootfs questions

Awesome, Thanks Bodhi.

Now I totally understand why it didn't work.

I followed step 4a, so created the uImage without the dtb and wondered why it didn't work when it recognised the same board id in the new images. LOL

I'll add it into the env from this version and install it again.

Thanks again for all your work with this. Seeing speeds of around 20-24MB/s over samba transferring large files so its not too bad as a little storage box.

All went perfectly Bodhi. Apart from those usb bad device messages. Is that just because I have no USB inserted?
I kept my old usb bootable stick as an emergency which is using the old kernel.

spaceballz,

Exactly. Because the booting script in the envs scans everything that would be available for a Kirkwood box. To make it less noisy and faster boot, set the envs to the way you boot this box: SATA rootfs and then USB if no SATA drive.

fw_setenv bootdev ide
fw_setenv devices "ide usb"

I noticed you also set up netconsole server to the ip address 192.168.1.63. It's a good idea when you plan to disconnect serial console later, and rely on netconsole to see booting progress. It slows down booting ony by a few seconds, so no big thing. But if the box 192.168.1.63 is running, you will see interferences with this serial console.

I would do that too!

Good evening,

can someone help me with what kind of command I can disable the LEDs from the Netgear MS2000,
the blue flashing annoys me a little.

rom me also need none of the leds light up.

Or can I delete the whole thing in the RS.Local out?

Ok done.

echo none > /sys/class/leds/status:blue:power_led/trigger
echo none > /sys/class/leds/status:blue:activity_led/trigger
