Could you post the link to the log?

bodhi,

I was referring to the first set of logs in this thread.
Re: Debian on Dell Wyse 3020

That pxau2o-ehci must be very old.

Currently this is the driver

Quote

│ CONFIG_USB_EHCI_MV: │
│ │
│ Enables support for Marvell (including PXA and MMP series) on-chip │
│ USB SPH and OTG controller. SPH is a single port host, and it can │
│ only be EHCI host. OTG is controller that can switch to host mode. │
│ Note that this driver will not work on Marvell's other EHCI │
│ controller used by the EBU-type SoCs including Orion, Kirkwood, │
│ Dova, Armada 370 and Armada XP. See "Support for Marvell EBU │
│ on-chip EHCI USB controller" for those. │

Which is also in tld-2.1 kernel.

But I will check the mainline config to see if there is any thing obviously mising.

bodhi,

Did you find any missing modules to include? Also, could you create a new dtb file that changes the status of the mass-storage section from "disabled" to "okay"?

Mischif,

Not yet. But on the safe side, I will include more PXA modules in the next build.

The mass storage and the otg are enabled in the DTS

&usb_otg0 {
        status = "okay";
};

&usb_otg_phy0 {
        status = "okay";
};

&hsic0 {
        status = "okay";

        usb1@1 {
                compatible = "usb424,2640";
                reg = <0x01>;
                #address-cells = <0x01>;
                #size-cells = <0x00>;

                mass-storage@1 {
                        compatible = "usb424,4040";
                        reg = <0x01>;
                        status = "okay";
                };
        };
};

&hsic_phy0 {
        status = "okay";
        reset-gpios = <&gpio 63 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;
};
The DTB was compiled from the mainline DTS version, with that status okay added for hsic0.

Let's see. This box has 4 USB ports, which port did you use for the rootfs? have you tried the other ports?

I will also modify the DTS to add hsic1.

=====

There is one item I need to investigate. The mass-storage in the DTS has the compatible string that might be obsolete : compatible = "usb424,4040". I could not find it in the kernel. But it might be wildcard string in the driver.

Mischif,

Can you find out if there is GPL source for this Wyse 3020 box? either u-boot and/or kernel would be helpful.

Kernel 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.2

I've added CONFIG_PHY_PXA_USB in the chance that it is carried over from PXA to MMP2/3 architecture. I also add device hsic1 (mass storage). However, we still need more info to make hsic1 fully complete, so it might not work yet.

mass-storage@1 {
                        compatible = "usb424,4040";
                        reg = <0x01>;
                        status = "okay";
                };

Is what gets the internal 4GB flash enabled as it is hanging off the SMSC USB4640 USB Hub and Flash Media Controller. There is also a Genesis Logic GL850G 4-port Hub Controller on board as well.

bodhi,

Including those modules seems to be almost all of what is needed, the kernel seemed to recognize my ethernet adapter but couldn't configure it correctly and doesn't seem to recognize the built-in flash.

The kernel is likely missing the smsc75xx driver if you are not getting Ethernet. It appears that USB is identifying it but not loading the driver.

bodhi,

I'm not sure if this is luck or the biggest red herring but I think I managed to find the Wyse 3020 kernel source, given the most recent commit message is a bump to 3.0.31-1.21 and the kernel in the update script is 3.0.31-1-dajia this gives me a good feeling.

I also found a couple other kernel repos that say they're for marvell systems, but I feel less strongly about these than the one above

Cool! great progress.

Try what I recommended before
root=LABEL=rootfs
So you can move the rootfs around to other drive.

Memory is correct.

Which USB port is this sda drive plugged in?

OK, this is the rootfs.

Cool!

So you got a Debian loging prompt after this here?

bodhi,

I still don't have a login prompt, booting hangs after the last line of logs. I normally plug my flash drive into the front rightmost usb port, but I've tried moving it around and things still seem to work. I changed the root to the label after the first boot, but I don't think it matters until I can recognize the mmc correctly.

Not sure what you meant? mmc has nothing to do with the rootfs label.

Using the USB-to-Ethernet is big disappointment. Very much like the older rPi boards.

I don't see SATA either. This box should not be used as a NAS. So what's use case that it is good for?

That module is already in the kernel.

@Mischif,

Mount your USB rootfs on anther Linux box. And comment out the lines that said

# Work around to set persistent MAC address in Armada boxes
if [ -f /root/set_persistent_mac_address ]; then
        /root/set_persistent_mac_address
fi

And bring it back to the box and boot again.

bodhi,

I deleted /root/set_persistent_mac_address but I still don't get a login prompt and the kernel still fails to bring up ethernet, the line about not reading the u-boot env goes away though. Did you manage to find anything useful in the kernel source?

With the decent RAM, flash and gigabit ethernet my goal was to build a low-power pihole.

That source is quite old and general (it is Ariel reference board, not Wyse 3020 specifically). I'm not sure it will be useful. But it is a place to fallback.

That migth be OK. But keep in mind it will not be true Gigabit Ethernet, it is more like 300mbs. That was the shortcoming of the previous rPi boards, because Ethernet is on USB bus.

I'll build tld-2.3.

Here is kernel linux-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.3.

I've reconfigured SMSC75XX module to be builtin kernel module. So hopefully that will bring up Ethernet much earlier.

bodhi,

No luck; I'm still missing ethernet and mmc but I rebuilt my boot usb and the error about a corrupt config file has gone away:

I don't know how much this matters, but comparing the logs when I booted with the Dell kernel to the logs from the generic kernel the usb addresses and irqs are different.

Old logs:

The kernels seem to recognize the nic differently as well, but I don't know if that's due to an issue or older/newer code:

Old logs:
Jun  1 00:00:28 localhost kernel: [    2.852416] smsc75xx 1-1.2:1.0: eth0: register 'smsc75xx' at usb-mv ehci-1.2, smsc75xx USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet, 00:80:64:d7:16:82

New logs:
[    4.514224][   T37] smsc75xx 3-1.2:1.0 eth0: register 'smsc75xx' at usb-f0001000.usb-1.2, smsc75xx USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet, 00:80:64:d7:16:82

Also, the old logs seem to suggest mmc needs the sdhci/sdhci-pxa/sdhci-pltfm modules, are those already compiled into the kernel as well?

The rtc isn't being recognized so we may need mmp-rtc and spi isn't being recognized which I think is an issue with the dts file somehow, but I care about these a lot less than getting ethernet up and getting to a login prompt.

I don't know if it'll be useful but I had the idea to boot into Ubuntu 12.04 with the Dell kernel and check lsusb since it should recognize all the hardware; to me it looks like it says everything we already knew but maybe I'm missing something.

lsusb -t:

What we see above is that the old kernel used a different driver (pxa-ehci), and the modern kernel use another one (mv-ehci). And the location "usb-f0001000.usb-1.2" is a device tree style specific location.

So everything looks good as far as bringing up the USB Ethernet device.

[    5.185250][ T1121] smsc75xx 3-1.2:1.0 enx008064d71682: renamed from eth0

Now that the reason why it failed to bring up "eth0". USB Ethernet got a different naming convention. So eth0 was renamed to enx008064d71682.

See Trond's tutorial here:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,134026

$ sudo cp -a /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.orig

$ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

$ tail -5 /etc/network/interfaces
rename /enx*=usb0
allow-hotplug usb0
iface usb0 inet static
    address 192.168.100.100/24
    gateway 192.168.1.1

So you'd want to change the /etc/network/interfaces in the USB rootfs like below, if you want dynamic IP address (or use Trond format for static IP address above):

iface eth0 inet dhcp
to
rename /enx*=usb0
iface usb0 inet dhcp

I don't think "allow-hotplug usb0"is applicable to this box, because this device is not an USB adapter.

Success!

I've managed to log in over ssh, I think I was just thrown off by not getting a login prompt over serial like I do with a pi.

fat32 support isn't in the kernel so I can't mount my boot partition from Linux, and the screen output is stuck on wloader but I plan to use this headless so that doesn't bother me too much.

I think next steps should be getting the built-in mmc recognized so I can stop booting from a flash drive, getting the rtc working again to keep time and getting the spi flash recognized again; we can try to get display output and a login prompt over serial if we have time.

Cool!

You should get serial login prompt. If it stuck there at "starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server: sshd", just let it sit there, don't disconnect serial console and see how long it will take to get a login prompt, if at all. Once in a while press <return> key to see if the prompt will show.

After an hour or so, if serial console still stuck, exit it. And then run serial console again (picocom or minicom prefered). This time you should get a Debian login prompt.

Yes, it is in the kernel as loadable module, also exfat and vfat.

vfat.ko
fat.ko
exfat.ko

So you can modprobe it

modprobe fat

Yes, that woutd be a new topic.

First thing is to create a rootfs on an SD card. Or you can clone the rootf on the USB drive to SD card. Make sure you use the label rootfs in the bootargs.

Unplug the USB drive and attach the SD card. Power up, let it boot to see if you get any output to serial console.

Those are easier to do than the display.

bodhi,

I can't find or load the fat modules on my system, I think it's a conflict between my 6.2 kernel and my 5.3 rootfs:
root@debian:~# modprobe -v vfat
modprobe: FATAL: Module vfat not found in directory /lib/modules/6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.3
root@debian:~# modprobe -v fat
modprobe: FATAL: Module fat not found in directory /lib/modules/6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.3
root@debian:~# ls -l /lib/modules/
drwxr-xr-x  3 root root 4096 Sep 23  2021 5.13.8-mvebu-tld-1
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4096 Sep 24  2021 5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1

My system doesn't have an SD card reader, it uses mmc for its onboard flash; I expect we'll have to mess around with the dtb to get this working (along with possibly the modules I suggested earlier).

Maybe getting rtc working is just another module, but I think getting the spi recognized is an issue with the dtb.

I've waited for like half an hour now and still no serial login, but I did start getting this message repeatedly and now I seem to be locked out of the console, is it possible the system looks at a different uart when it's booting as opposed to when it's running?
INIT: Id "T0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

My interfaces file is straightforward like the example:
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
rename /enx*=eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Ah, my bad. I should have recomended you install a full kernel 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.3 first. You are booting the mismatched initrd. Since you have SSH now, you can install the kernel tld-2.3 using the instruction for 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 in the release thread.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,32146

After that you should have the fat module and the exfat module. And from now on it is a real kernel installation at each upgrade.

OK. That's another topic we need to dig deeper later.

I've just build kernel tld-2.4 that should get both working. Will upload shortly.

Ah. Now I recall some simlar problem, let me revisit the DTS again.

bodhi,

Just installing the updated kernel didn't change anything, but when I built and installed the 6.2 initrd the spi flash/rtc were recognized and I could mount my real /boot partition:
