Seagate GoflexNet - Debootstrap FATAL: kernel to old
October 19, 2013 01:51AM
Hello,

I took my Seagate Dockstar and GoflexNet devices from under the dust to install and use them to control some devices in my house (EIBD).
I have an "old" debian squeeze USB stick that boots the dockstar. Which works "like a charm"
I try to create a new USB stick with the GoflexNet using the serial port connection (the Seagate online service does not allow you to enable SSH anymore :-( ).
When I run the kirkwood.debian-wheezy.sh script I get the messages:

W: Failure trying to run: chroot /tmp/debian/mount -t proc proc /proc
W: see /tmp/debian/debootstrap/debootstrap.log ->
FATAL: kernel too old

And then the script stops.
I'm trying the squeeze install script, which seems run beyond the point where the kirkwood script fails.

and after this nothing happens.
Quite stuck now I Can't boot the device to create a new image on another stick.
I'll try my "old" USB image (which I luckily backed up).

My main concirn is I want to install wheezy but I'm unable to.

If you can boot your backup Squeeze stick, then upgrade to Wheezy (don't install Wheezy, lot of people have problem installing).

- change /etc/apt/sources.list to point to Wheezy (use the source that is close to your location)
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main

- upgrade:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

It takes ages to rewrite the image on the USB stick.
It took me less time to reinstall a USB stick with the install script on the dockstar, but it doesn't boot, even on the dockstar.

on the dockstar and the Goflex Net it says:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UBIFS error (pid 0): ubifs_get_sb: cannot open "ubi:rootfs", error -19
Error reading superblock on volume 'ubi:rootfs'!

Loading file "/boot/uInitrd" from usb device 0:1 (usbda1)

Wrong Image Format for bootm command

stopping USB..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm really beginning to think there's really something wrong with the install scripts of Jeff.
I'm still waiting for the image to finish writing on the original USB stick
I know the pogoplug(alike) devices are very sensitive, doesn't run with some sticks, but 3 different USB sticks, I don't really believe this.

It would be handy to have an image somewhere on the doozan website, which you can just write to a stick and which works. Like the firmware (openwrt) for routers. The Uboot stuff seems to work fine (appart from it not booting on the GoflexNet). I would be saving a lot of time with an image ("dd if=..." on linux) which I could deploy directly onto an USB stick.

I can see you put a lot of work into this.
I first need a running device (yes my USB stick is still writing), then I'll try to re-format a second USB stick and put the rootfs from your post there.
There must be a reason why uBoot isn't able to find the uImage and uInitrd from the USB stick created with ./dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh.
What's the point of having an install procedure which does not work?! let alone ./kirkwood.debian-wheezy.sh is also not working!

It boots the Goflex Net with my old squeeze USB image from my dockstar. But There's no network :-(.

I'll try to boot my dockstar and try to deploy the rootfs from http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096 by bodhi.
Re: Seagate GoflexNet - Debootstrap FATAL: kernel to old

When I try to extract the file:

root@debian:/mnt/usb# tar -xjf Debian-3.11.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
tar (child): bzip2: Cannot exec: Ñ Ñка Ð½Ñ Ð¹ÑнÑе
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

:-)
Or the bz2 file is corrupt, or squeeze isn't able to read the bz2 file.

Was able to extract the bz2 on PC. Will transfer the tar file to the dockstar and extract the rootfs

bodhi, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!! The Goflex Net booted 1st time. :-)

Very dissapointed about the non functional install scripts from Jeff, but if this works I'll be doing it this way from now on.
