OK. Quite relevant which variation of the 8191 chips that is. I'll take a look.

8191su works via USB signalling :)
Re: Debian on Promwad-Thinclient

MM,

Strange. It should be 8192se (8191/8192). The 8192su (8191/8192) is usually seen in the USB dongle. The rtl8192se is usually seen in the mPCIe card.

Try
modprobe rtl8192se

bodhi,

I also tried the new debian 6.13 kernel (thanks cmp18 for the build and upload).

PCIe slots presents, card AC7260 inserted, not worked. modprobe also dont helping.
USB completelly not worked, any devices not worked and no indication on it (led on flash and mouse).
Looks like a no power on USB ports.

Mikele25 & MM,

As I mentioned previously

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,138540,138974#msg-138974

Quote

There are 2 parts. The PCI ports and the card. First, the PCI ports should be shown in dmesg, but the card will not without the drivers. I added pcie1 in the DTS to make sure both ports are enumerated (before there was only pcie0).

A general pcie0 and pcie1 like below might not be enough, if the card is required to be defined on what device and lane it is on.
&pcie0 {
status = "okay";
};

&pcie1 {
status = "okay";
};
The first part (pcie ports) must happend (i.e. shown up in dmesg) before anything device plugging in will work at all. Look in dmesg to see the PCIe ports enumeraion.

So the best way forward is to plug in the mPCIe card. Boot into stock OS and see if the card is detected. Even without the right driver, there might be info that are very useful. We might be able to incorporate the info found in stock OS into the new DTS to bring up the card.

After booted into stock OS,
dmesg
lsmod
lscpi
lspci -vv

bodhi,

If it hasn't been published here yet, then here are the sources of the stock Debian6 for this client.
Logs above were obtained with this OS installed.

May be, this will help.

My mistake, in post above, kernel and uboot sources, not Debian, of course.

It looks that way to me. When in doubt, you can check it.

bodhi,

I worded the question incorrectly, the LED
doesn't matter, I'm trying to find the reason of this message:

[ 3.571022] kirkwood-pinctrl f1010000.pin-controller: unsupported function gpio on pin mpp7

Ah, OK. That I need to look at kernel code.

The password for Depo Sky A60 default system ( Depo ThinOS ) is root / kiziltas

I have backed up u-boot, uImage, uInitrd and ubi partition, however it is difficult to back up ubi volume properly, since the ThinOS does not include ubi tools it seems, however, I guess I can find static binaries somewhere. I guess, tar archive of individual files should do. There are about 130M of them.

In the OS you can mount USB flash drive with fat32, ext2, ext3 and then copy files over to your main PC.

Does anybody have an a60 with default firmware? I would like to verify whether binaries are identical, also please tell me whether the password is unique to my machine or shared with yours.

Either way, having access to a linux system with USB flash support is going to simplify installation of a different OS greatly, first of all, you can back your system up, then overwrite mtd partition, however be careful! writing to nand without erasing it first can corrupt the erase block permanently, so make sure you use correct tool for the job.

If you manage to corrupt kernel or initrd partitions, you can try to edit u-boot variables to load the kernel from different offset, altering cmdline partition table as well, I guess, but it's better to avoid.

I think it is possible to have 2025.01 u-boot. But
I'm out of time at the moment. I could look into
rolling new u-boot in a couple of months (end of
March).

Are you still going to release it?

Yes, added pcie0 and pcie1, and moved the USB hub to i2c1. I've attached the DTS files to this post.

I'm starting to look in u-boot to see if this particular USB driver is available. If it is available then I'll proceed, if not available then I won't.

Re: Promwad-ThinClient - can't boot 6.11 kernel

The stock U-Boot 2011.06 (Nov 15 2012 - 14:51:21) on my machine is lacking ability to work with ubi subsystem, it cannot access XGI frambuffer and so the screen is black until kernel loads, if it's 2.6.39.2 and stays dark if it's other version.

I was wondering if it is possible to implement a boot selector to pick between USB and NAND boot without command line via serial.

Also I was wondering why you have so complex USB boot sequence, for me this works:
setenv usb_args 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial video=xgifb:mode:1024x768x32'
setenv usb_boot 'setenv bootargs ${usb_args};usb start;ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage;ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd;bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
run usb_boot

I am pondering using conditionals to make it boot USB if it's inserted and nand otherwise, but perhaps direct menu would be nice.

The point about serial came out because I have figured the default password for Depo ThinOS is kiziltas so it is now possible to flash it without serial cable.

I don't know if it was mistype or intentional in the kirkwood-promwad-thin-client.dts:

1. kirkwood-88f6283 shouldn't it be 282? Stock bootlog, it is complete since the boot messages go to screen as well as login prompt:
U-Boot 2011.06 (Nov 15 2012 - 14:51:21)
Promwad-ThinClient

SoC:   Kirkwood 88F6282_?? RevID 0x01
DRAM:  1 GiB
NAND:  1024 MiB
In:    serial
Out:   serial
Err:   serial
Net:   egiga0, egiga1
88E1121 Initialized on egiga0, devadr 1
88E1121 Initialized on egiga1, devadr 0
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

2. bootargs = "console=ttyS0,115200n8 root=/dev/sda1 earlyprintk";

Shouldn't it be ttyS0,115200,8n1 though it works fine with just 115200. Also I was unable to type anything until I disabled hardware flow control in minicom. My 0-modem cable wiring is complete and I'm using a PC with real COM port.

Though I guess bootargs from u-boot env take precedence, so it doesn't matter?

3. partition table. In stock Depo ThinOS rom it is:
dev:    size   erasesize  name

UBI: attaching mtd3 to ubi0

I don't understand the rest of the file so I can't comment on it. Also I think it would be useful to provide copy of Depo ThinOS stock ROM, along with debian from https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,138037

Do you think I should make a new post and attach the files right there or something? It would be 147 MiB total approximately.
Re: Promwad-ThinClient - can't boot 6.11 kernel

For the new u-boot,

1. UBIFS should be easy.

2 .Graphics is not possible due to lack of driver.

3. USB might be possible, but that will remain to be seen. Currently the power regulator in kernel is not working as we want. There is only enough power to use 1 USB flash drive.

If you can, please test the latest DTB in kernel linux-6.13.8-kirkwood-tld-1

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

It's best that we can figure out as much as possible about the USB hub before I roll new u-boot.

4. kirkwood-88f6283 in DTS: I vaguely recall somebody has identified the SoC is 6283. It's practically the same a 6282 in a lot of respects. So not a real issue.

5. bootargs = "console=ttyS0,115200n8 root=/dev/sda1 earlyprintk":

Should be just "console=ttyS0,115200".

What's in the DTS is not relevant if the bootargs is passed to Linux from u-boot.

6. Provide copy of Depo ThinOS stock ROM: you could upload it somewhere and post the link here. The forum does not allow large files attached to posts.

Could you summarized what is lacking with stock u-boot that you guys want to have? and what is working, i.e SATA, USB, saving envs,...

stock u-boot is quite functional, but for IP Plug netconsole would be very convenient (to get access to UART, i need to disassemble the entire case), it is also desirable to have u-boot envs in a script (uEnv.txt)

Stock U-Boot already has usb support, however ext2load is fairly slow. I have tried to run 6.13.8 kernel but apparently load address is incorrect or something, because I get GZIP error when trying to uncompress with bootm. Kernel address is set to 8000 and initramfs to 0, perhaps that's the problem. I am going to try different load addresses when building.

No, that's not the problem. The Kirkwood kernel has been always like that. Unless a board uses different address base other than 0.

See here for how to boot Kirkwood kernel with stock u-boot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,102054,105374#msg-105374

The u-boot load addresses are also important.

Re: Debian on Promwad-Thinclient
April 17, 2025 02:16AM
I have found that problem was with -C gzip while creating uImage / uInitrd, it started to boot when I changed to -C none.

Also I wasn't able to run lspci and dtc on debian system, so I think you might want to include them in next version. I have verified that attached dts file matches the file from tar archive from page 3 so I have used the tarball dtb file instead of compiling it.

The message came right after bootm printed headers and verified checksums:
   Uncompressing Kernel Image ... Error: Bad gzipped data
GUNZIP: uncompress, out-of-mem or overwrite error - must RESET board to recover
resetting ...
WTPlug: setting SYSRST_OUT low.

After rebuilding uImage and uInitrd without compression (-C none) I have produced this boot log, slightly censored to remove exact bad blocks and mac addresses.

From what I see in the entire log, your rootfs has some problem. Are you using Debian-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 or using your own rootfs from somewhere else?

When you install Debian kernel, the compression in this file take precedence: /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf. What's in the command line is not relevant if there is compression specified in this conf file. For example:

#
# COMPRESS: [ gzip | bzip2 | lz4 | lzma | lzop | xz | zstd ]
#

COMPRESS=gzip

And the network also has problem.

Configuring network interfaces...ifquery: /etc/network/interfaces:3: unknown or no method and no inherits keyword specified
ifquery: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
ifquery: /etc/network/interfaces:3: unknown or no method and no inherits keyword specified
ifquery: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
ifup: /etc/network/interfaces:3: unknown or no method and no inherits keyword specified
ifup: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"

Install the tools:
apt-get install pciutils
apt-get install device-tree-compiler

There is problem with the DTS regarding the USB 251x hub.
[    9.302386][   T22] usb251xb 1-002c: configuring block 0 failed: -6
[    9.308754][   T22] usb251xb 1-002c: Failed to connect hub (-6)

But you are still able to boot Debian on USB.

So I think this USB port is not on that hub. Am I correct? I don't have the hardware so you guys must point me to the info somewhere in this thread.
