Yes. it's normal. You are running Debian on USB rootfs. So the USB rootfs must be attached. The USB rootfs is your entire GNU Linux system.

> rootfs: Clearing orphaned inode 51454 (uid=0,
> gid=0, mode=0100755, size=1133392)

When you see this in the log, your rootfs was corrupted. It could have been because you removed the USB rootfs while the system was running.

Always shut down the system this way at command line:
sync
shutdown -h now
And if needed, remove power cord only after about 10 seconds (how long is depending on how heavy the rootfs is).

Now if you can not cold start and boot to the Debian prompt, then power down. Bring the USB rootfs to your Linux VM. At the terminal, if the USB drive is mounted, unmount it and fix errors:

# if the drive was assigned /dev/sdb
umount /dev/sdb1
e2fsck /dev/sdb1

And then
sync
Remove the USB rootfs and bring it to the ix2 NAS and cold start.

======

In some instances, if the rootfs was too corrupted that Debian cannot boot, then you need to recreate the USB rootfs again.

Here is how to back up the rootfs using tar command:

bodhi,

Now it works again with the USB stick inside, thank you. But how do I now get access to the NAS to save things on it? How can I change settings on it? Is there a web interface?

This is a headless box so you would SSH in using a terminal like you did using serial console. And install Debian packages.

Network file sharing to other Linux or Mac boxes is through NFS, which is already installed. To set up file sharing to Window boxes, you need to install Samba.

See the Wiki thread for these topics.

Also, I'd recommend you backing up the USB rootfs often, while you are installing and playing with Debian packages. When things go badly, you can just restore the rootfs to a previous good state (that you were running and reboot successfully).

how to backup it?

is it that what i see in the wiki for the backup?

but if i do it via a server, then it is not saved locally on the device. And if I use the USB stick then the USB stick has to be reformatted first and then Debian would no longer be on it, right?

Yes.

Backup and Cloning rootfs

Back up a live rootfs using rsync
Backup/Restore rootfs using tar command

- Backup/Restore rootfs using tar command:

Shutdown the NAS, bring the USB rootfs to another Linux box and create tarball.

- Back up a live rootfs using rsync:

a. Scheduled backup: If there is another Linux box running in the network, schedule a job to backup the rootfs (prefereably after hours) to a NFS share on that Linux box.

b. On demand backup: need to plug in another USB drive to backup the rootfs to it.

All right, thank you very much. I'm really pleased that it's finally working. Thank you very much for your great help. I have already installed samba and am currently loading my first backup. I'll install the web interface and so on later. Is there a way to switch off the hard drives when they are not in use? Or can I set this in the web interface?

Use Debian hdparm for a simple solution. It's in the Wiki thread

bodhi,

I've been trying to shut down the HDDs with hd-idle for a while now, but somehow it doesn't work.

root@debian:~# cd /tmp
root@debian:/tmp# ls
. cores logsamba.192.168.178.25 logsamba.nmbd
.. hd-idle_1.05_armel.deb logsamba.jans-pc logsamba.smbd
root@debian:/tmp#

the confusing thing is that there was nothing in the file you are supposed to edit.

  GNU nano 7.2 /etc/default/hd-idle
START_HD_IDLE=True
HD_IDLE_OPTS="-i 60 -l /tmp/hd-idle.log"

is there a way to put the shutdown -h now command on the button on the back so that you can shut down the nas without an ssh connection?

bodhi,

it is now running but I have the problem that I can only copy 10GB at a time when copying to the Nas, because otherwise it says that there is not enough memory available, although I have 2x 1TB hard drives in it. Also, I can only write to it at a maximum of 6mb per second. I had a look and the CPU load goes up to 100% during the write process. Could this mean that the Nas is simply too slow to write more than 6mb per second?

Your Samba (?) shares are defined incorrectly.

It sounds like the file transfer (instead going to the shares on HDD), it is going to your rootfs, which is USB.

bodhi,

And how do I have to change my Samba share so that this is correct? And where the files are saved to I had actually checked that this is definitely not the USB stick, because I checked this in the Rasp Controller software (you can easily integrate other debians systems, not just Raspberry Pi) and it said that this is written to the HDD. So you could see how the free space on the HDD became less.

Post (attach) your /etc/samba/smb.conf here. Or post the part of smb.conf where you defined the shares.

Try this

Remove the media share.

Keep the DATA2 share.

So now when you connect from a Windows or Mac boxes, you will only see DATA2.

Reboot.

That might be a serious problem with this HDD. What type of disk is this? what is the HDD model?

Try testing with a smaller file to see what the performance is.

/dev/sdb1 on /media/Disk1 type fuseblk (rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096)
/dev/sda1 on /media/Disk2 type fuseblk (rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096)

That was likely your problem. You are using NTFS file system on these disks? NTFS performance on Linux is very bad comparing to other filesystems. The only reason why one should use NTFS is so the disk can be mounted on Windows. If you are using these permanently on the IX2 NAS then it should be Ext4 file system. Your rootfs is on USB, so it's OK to use Ext4 for the HDDs.

Re: Arch Linux on Lenovo ix2 NAS stuck at Starting kernel

Jan_Grz1,

Using Ext4 on the NAS HDDs, and define the Samba or NFS shares on the HDD folders. Samba will export these shares. And then you'd mount the Samba shares on Windows. And it's highly recommended to use Ext4 or Ext3 to host these shares. Windows does not know what file system these shares are on.

Only when you remove the HDD itself and install it on a Windows box (SATA or USB adapter), then Windows will not mount the Ext4 file system. That's what I meant above. If you don't care for this scenario then don't worry, just use Ext4.

You vm.min_free_kbytes is too low. See the Wiki thread for explanation:

Memory & Swap Settings

Tuning for low RAM boxes. Also read several posts after for setups for logging to RAM.

The vm.min_free_kbytes parameter should be at least 16,384 kbytes. This box has 256MB RAM, so you should try 32,768 kbyes or 65,536 Kbytes

Like I said. You need to set up Samba properly.

- Is the Samba share specified in /etc/samba/smb.conf to point to a mount point?
- Is the mount point shown in the system when you run "mount" or "lsblk"?
- Is the mount point a directory in side the HDD?
- When you pull a file from that share to your WIndows PC, is it copied over?
- When you push a file from your WIndows PC, does it appear on the HDD?
