Kernel/File System/Debian Version Upgrade Help
September 27, 2025 01:26PM
My Pogos and Dell Kace boxes are far out of date as shown below, although working fine. I need advice on sequencing the updates/upgrades. Update the kernel only, or the kernel and file system? What Debian version is the file system in Bodhi's current kernel/file system package? Or, do I upgrade the kernel only and then do a distribution upgrade as described in the wiki? Also, can the Oxnas Pogo even be upgraded to a later Debian version?

Thanks.

root@PogoMobile:~# uname -a
Linux PogoMobile 4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1 #1 PREEMPT Mon Jan 25 20:35:24 PST 2016 armv5tel GNU/Linux

root@PogoP21:~# uname -a
Linux PogoP21 3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Oct 25 15:59:43 PDT 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux

Which Debian version are you on?
cat /etc/debian_version

It's bookworm and kernel 6: Debian-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

That's what I usually do. The newer kernel usually work fine for old Debian version (unless it's too old).

Back up the rootfs first before you do distribution upgrade.

Given your systems are very old, it might not be possible to skip Debian versions. Debian only supports upgrading one version to the next.

The Pogo V3 Oxnas is end-of -life. The OXNAS (armv6) architecture is no longer in mainline Linux for last several versions. But kernel 5.15.xxx still exist as a LTS kernel.

- The last kernel is linux-5.15.158-oxnas-tld-2.bodhi.tar.bz2
- The last rootfs is bookworm Debian-5.15.158-oxnas-tld-2-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

If there is important security issue, or requests here in the forum, I will build the latest linux-5.15.xxx-oxnas kernel. But I don't plan to release more newer stable 5.15.xxx.

So you should try to run the latest OXNAS Debian version and latest kernel now. Because bookworm is now oldstable and have backports.

Here are my boxes and their versions:

Pogo Mobile is 8.7 Jessie
Pogo P21 is 9.11 Stretch, I'll have to check the U-Boot version
Black Pogo is 10.3 Buster
M300 LMS is 10.1 Buster

These boxes don't do much, the M300 is a music server and the Mobile and P21 are client players. The Black Pogo is the backup box.

If there is not a significant vulnerability, maybe I should just run them until they die. I'm certainly not having any real problems.
