next Netgear Stora Recovery

Hello Bodhi. After a four-year break, I'm reaching out to you again for help. In 2019-2020, I installed Debian on Store's new releases with your assistance, and it worked perfectly until I decided to expand my storage from two hard drives to 3 terabytes. After restarting Store, the system stopped loading. My entire system was stuck on a 30-gigabyte USB drive. I tried to boot from another flash drive that had worked well before, but it didn't work, and the store wouldn't load. I just looked at your photos and realized that the loader can only handle hard drives up to 2 terabytes in size. My mistake was not checking your tutorial immediately. My question is, is there a way to fix this? I think I can connect to the store via a serial port, but I haven't done that in a while. I'm hoping you can help me with this. Is it possible?

Go ahead and connect serial console. Power up and let it boot automatically. And then post the entire serial console log here.

Hello Bodhi. Thank you for agreeing to help. My problem is that I can't connect via the serial console. I'm working on a raspberry pi 5, downloaded a minicom, connected a usb-ttl converter to Stora. In the terminal, I log into minicom with the command sudo minicom -b 115200 -o -D /dev/ttyAMA10
I turn on the power in Netgear Stora and there is no download. What am I doing wrong?

Now I tried to connect Netgear Stora to the router via a wire, a new
ip address 192.168.1.105 has appeared on the home network. Is it possible to use
this for recovery?

Here at last I managed to activate the serial port. Now I have a usb stick in my usb port with your Debian system in the rootfs partition. It worked perfectly. And now it stopped booting. The automatic boot stops here. How do I continue?

The problem with this previous error

EHCI timed out on TD - token=0xb4008d80

is that old u-boot code is not very robust dealing with USB. When you have large HDDs in the slots, a lot of power is used initializing them. Especially with this Stora box, it is problematic.

Do you intend to run this system with USB roots? or do you really want the rootfs in the HDD?

Something broke again. It doesn't boot with or without hard drives

You have already booted this configuration above.

Power up, in serial console, interrupt u-boot countdown and 

setenv devices 'usb ide'
setenv bootdev usb
boot

The setenvs are transient. After testing this manual step to boot USB rootfs a few times, and satisfied that it works consistently, you need to make it permanent with one of the 3 following methods. PIck one that you like. The uEnv.txt is most resilient method that you don't have to save envs at all.

1. Use uEnv.txt

Boot into Debian and create

touch /boot/uEnv.txt

edit the uEnv.txt to have this content:

devices=usb ide
bootdev=usb

And reboot.

sync
shutdown -r now

2. Set envs in Debian

Log into Debian and

fw_setenv devices 'usb ide'
fw_setenv bootdev usb

And then reboot.

3. set the envs in serial console

setenv devices 'usb ide'
setenv bootdev usb
saveenv

and then

boot

So now regardless what's in the HDDs, the USB drive will be considered first by u-boot, and it will boot without scanning the HDD for the kernel uImage.

Thank you so much for your help. One more question. For a combined boot, I want the system to boot from the hdd if there is a rootfs on the hard drive, and if there is no rootfs on the hdd, it should boot from the flash drive. Is this possible?

fw_setenv bootdev ide

Will this command be correct?

Yes, it is correct.

However, if the HDD are large disks (> 2TB), this u-boot version 2027.07 for Stora will have problem booting. If the HDD is small (2TB or smaller) then it's OK.
