WD My Cloud Home Duo - Install of a new kernel
February 15, 2026 06:07PM
Hi,

I have installed debian12 on this Cloud Duo and it works fine.

Now, I try to make and install of a new kernel, but i cannot find any howto or tips, to do this.
For now, all i have tried, the kernel isnt able to boot.

The options of a baking kernel is ok, but then? Got the gpl-files from WD, kernel 4.9.233

fwtutil -r 5:/mnt/emmc.uImage -r 12:/mnt/emmc.uImage -r 8:/mnt/linux/rootfs2.bin -r 9:/mnt/linux/rootfs2.bin -r 6:/mnt/rescue.emmc.dtb -r 7:/mnt/rescue.emmc.dtb

That is at the end of the debian install i used. Maybe anyone knows better about, like the kernelimage and dtb-files. I could give more informations about the maschine, if neccesary.

Thanx.

@User1223,

Do you have serial console connected? It'll be good to see the boot log, ie. specs of this box (to create DTS file or matching it with an existing DTS).

No, there is no serial connection. I made a boot script for logging.. Nearly everthing is working, raid etc. But the network-card has no link (green LED is working). Speed: 10Mb/s, Duplex: Half ?
So, every test of booting the system, i have to restore the data of emmc, when it fails again.....

Without serial console, I don't think it's possible for me to help booting the latest Debian kernel.

Thanks for your answer.

It is not, that I would need help for booting a kernel or the configuration to start correct. I think I am doing
something wrong handling the tools like 'fwtutil'. Sadly, there no hints about the EMMC of the cloud duo.
When someone build a kernel for this machine and its working, fine. So i have to do more try and error.
