NSA325 with bad blocks in NAND and no network connection
February 27, 2026 05:47PM
Hello,

Thank you, Bodhi and others, for supporting the EOL NAS.

I have an NSA325 with stock firmware which used as a backup nas.

For the past few days, my NAS device has been unable to boot up or be accessed over the network. There might be a problem with the NAND or the network interface. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is.

Try booting with UART. I can read the boot logs, but they don't help me understand what happened.

Can I continue using this device for data storage, or is it completely unusable due to a hardware failure?

Thank you for your help.

To test the connection in u-boot: repeat kwboot, interrupt u-boot count down and
setenv ethaddr 62:86:25:d1:0b:51
ping <your router IP address>
And then boot into Debian
boot
Log in and see if network is up.

If u-boot failed to bring up Ethernet, you might want to check the connection to the router, and the ethernet cable.

Re: NSA325 with bad blocks in NAND and no network connection

Hi Bodhi,

Thank you for the quick feedback.

I've configured the parameters, but I can't ping the router. The LAN port LED is blinking green.

It seems the network card is faulty. Can I buy a USB-to-LAN adapter and connect it to the front USB 3.0 port, which is natively supported by Debian? Which adapter would be best suited for this?

Re: NSA325 with bad blocks in NAND and no network connection
February 28, 2026 02:18PM
Tai,

Before you buy the USB-LAN adapter, try a few more tests.

kwboot again and at u-boot prompt
setenv ethaddr 62:86:25:d1:0b:51
setenv ipaddr < your IP address for this box (conform to the router IP subnet 192.168.178.x)>
ping <your router IP address>

If no net work, log into Debian, remove the ethernet cable and reattach it. See if any thing appear in dmesg.

=====

I don't have much experience with USB-LAN adapter so can't recommend any.

To improve your chance that the adapter you're getting has support in Linux mainline, look in this file for the chipset and some brand.

Re: NSA325 with bad blocks in NAND and no network connection

Hi bodhi,

I think the network card is defective.

NSA325> setenv ethaddr 62:86:25:d1:0b:51

Warning: egiga0 MAC addresses don't match:
Address in SROM is 62:86:25:d1:0b:51
Address in environment is 52:3b:20:9c:11:51
NSA325> setenv ipaddr 192.168.178.8
NSA325> ping 192.168.178.1
Using egiga0 device

ARP Retry count exceeded; starting again
ping failed; host 192.168.178.1 is not alive
NSA325>

No entries are logged in dmesg after logging in debian and disconnecting/reconnecting the network. The LED starts blinking green, but nothing else happens.

I'll look for a USB stick in the next few days and hopefully find one that works with Debian. I'll keep you updated.

Re: NSA325 with bad blocks in NAND and no network connection
March 05, 2026 02:29AM
Hi bodhi,

I bought this usb-ethernet adapter from Amazon which should natively supported by linux kernel.

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Tp-Link-UE300-Gigabit-Ethernet-adapter-White-Flyaway-Orchid/dp/B00V4BGDKU/ref=sr_1_1_mod_primary_new?crid=VTIN3A5W0HMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.lu6xcSLw3QeR8Y7q4cr47g.3Gb0E-m6o09t57SK23DPh6lIvDIKGw3ZMMhzp07NnU8&dib_tag=se&keywords=ue00%2Btp-link&qid=1772699057&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=ue00%2Btp-link%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-1&th=1

In Debian, the OS cannot load the driver, or there is a naming conflict with the old built-in LAN adapter, eth0. How can I configure the USB adapter?

Tai,

It does look OK. But you need to do a couple things.

1. Edit the file /etc/network/interfaces

Comment out the rename and auto

#rename /end0=eth0
#auto lo eth0
and add
auto lo enx00e04c3b8d18

And reboot. Hope it will enable the network.

2. You might need to install Debian package firmware-realtek.

Look for /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8153b-2.fw in the rootfs.
ls -l /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8153b-2.fw
If it's not found,
apt-get install firmware-realtek
Installation might be a probem, if there is no network. So let me know I should upload this file here for you to use temporarily.

Hi bodhi,

Great, thanks for your help!

After modifying the configuration file and rebooting the NAS, the adapter will automatically connect to the internet. No further changes are needed.
root@debian:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
#auto lo eth0
auto lo enx00e04c3b8d18
iface lo inet loopback
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface enx00e04c3b8d18 inet dhcp

and reboot the NAS

Hi Bodhi,

Thank you for your support!

The NAS can be accessed using the USB-Ethernet adapter.

Now, I would like to install Debian on my hard drives and boot from there. They are 3 TB and 8 TB. Which u-boot version should I use: uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb or uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.bodhi.tar?

Could you provide instructions? I can't find the relevant post right now.

Cool!

Note that the new initrd.img-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 was generated. For completeness, you should recreate the uInitrd

cd /boot
cp -a uInitrd uInitrd.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

Let me update the u-boot installation to include the latest version first before you try. Both of these 2 version have some problem. The uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb has a bug in accessing large HDD.

Hi bodhi,

I've updated the kernel to Linux-6.18.10-kirkwood-tld-1.

Great that you'll be able to create a new version of the u-boot for zyxel nsa325 soon. I'm looking forward to testing it once you've finished. Do you have a timeline for when the new version will be released?

I'd also like to ask if I can install OpenWRT without encountering any other critical problems. What should I consider if I want to install Debian afterward? Debian is more flexible and modern.

Can OpenWRT be booted from a USB drive without modifying the system, as I previously tested with Kwoot and USB-Debian? Or, do I have to flash the NAND, as described in the instructions?

I already did. Sash has tested this version (see a couple posts after the linked post).

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,135222,140560#msg-140560

I just need to create the tarball and update the release post.

You can install OpenWrt. But you should use this procedure after you've installed my new u-boot and have booted to Debian on USB or HDD rootfs. It wil be simpler later to dual boot Debian and OpenWrt.

OpenWrt must be flashed to NAND.
