Dockstar with Debian. Can I use Debian's kernel? or one of the ones posted here?

Posted by troutsoup
basically if i install debian, is the stock debian kernel able to work fine? or do i need one of the tweaked ones listed here?

i've messed around with my dockstar before but it's been over a year so i dont remember what needs done with the kernel. It is a Seagate Dockstar.

thanks for the answer to a probably simple question!

You can't go wrong using one of bodhi's rootfs'. If you wanna get experimental and try straight issue Debian, see here for limited support for o Dockstar: http://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/sheevaplug/plugs/#limited .
Stick with bodhi's - you cant go far wrong and as most if not all the people on here use it its fairly well tested and there are people around to assist if you have a problem

i had an old install that worked, but had a lot of clutter and half finished ideas. after a little tinkering and reading i decided to try wiping the partition to start clean and used http://projects.doozan.com/debian/ to get a fresh clean wheezy install. changed it to jessie and did apt-get dist-upgrade and got a nice clean debian 8 install. everything seems to work.

the only reason i asked about the stock debian kernel is awhile back i remember a debian kernel update breaking things to where i manually had to roll it back.

so now i am wondering what is the advantage of bodhi's rootfs and/or kernel?

thanks!

@troutsoup,

There are pros and cons in using a customed built kernel and rootfs such as this. I can't speak in generality for other similar releases. But I'll list the differences so you and others can see which are really pros and cons for each individual purpose.

Pros:

- GPL compliance. You can build the exact kernel/rootfs by yourself from the release packages. I would be hesitate to use anything that I can't see the source, unless it's from the kernel mainline.
- Addition capabilities specific to these plugs, which are not in the mainline source tree.
- Bug fixes that have not got into mainline source tree.
- Active supports by the maintainer. And if you are using it, you can exchange ideas with everybody who are using it in the forum, when encountering kernel bugs. Or when you are not sure how to do something.

Cons:

- It's not built directly from the mainline source tree by you. So you need to trust the reputation of the maintainer. And if you don't feel you can trust the maintainer, then you have to verify that the packages are not malicious yourself. You can run several security suites to do that (google will tell you which ones).

I have to dockstars and both running debian jessie + kernel and newer U-Boot from here.
The only thing thad doesn't work is shootdown, the device doesn't power off.
@troutsoup - in simple terms bodhi's a good guy ... I've been using his kernels for years now, without major incident ... the advantage for me, is if there is/was a difficulty then I can post a question here and bodhi will (probably) answer ...

The other thing is that the mainstream Debian wheels do seem to turn quite slowly, they turn a little faster here :)
