Trying to save a Pogoplug E02
September 08, 2017 10:36PM
Hello, all
First time poster. I "inherited" a broken E02 and want to see if I can salvage it. Not sure what happened previously but could never ssh into it. Just received USB TTL converter and soundblaster cable, hooked it up and at least it's talking to me. Have been reading LOTS here, learning much -- but still not understanding much of what Pogo's telling me. Here's what I got:

It has Jeff/davygravy old 2011 u-boot installed.

You don't have any USB drive plugged in.

So it booted into stock Pogo OS.

--------

It will be simple to get you to boot the latest rootfs, since you have serial console.

1. Power up again, interrupt serial console at countdown

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

and get the listing of current u-boot envs and post here:

printenv

2. While I'm looking at the envs, you can go to the kernel/rootfs release thread, download the latest rootfs Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 .

Updated 24 Jul 2017:

Basic Debian stretch Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 188M
- install size: 488M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see note 2 below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, and sysvinit-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Download at Dropbox:

Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

md5:

sha256:

And remember to check the hash of what you download, as always.

Create the new rootfs on USB thumb drive, following the instruction very closely (don't substitute any commands that you think it is equivalent, if a command cannot be executed, then post the question here).

Note: you need to do step 4, since you are going to boot with old u-boot circa 2012.

Is this u-boot ok, or would it be better to replace with a newer one?

Again, should I instead use something newer?

Will do it tomorrow and post it here.

Thanks again!

Yes, after you've booted into new Debian rootfs, then install new u-boot:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

> It needs a USB drive to boot into stock Pogo OS?

No, it does not.

However, U-Boot 2011.12 (Feb 20 2012 - 21:21:59) was installed so that it can boot USB roots.

radiodude,

Once you have the USB rootfs ready.

Plug in the USB rootfs, power up, interrupt serial console and execute

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'
printenv
boot

And post the entire serial console log here.

radiodude,

1. Typo:

u-boot>> setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'

2. USB rootfs drive was not plugged in (or was not recognized):

scanning bus for devices... 1 USB Device(s) found
scanning bus for storage devices... 0 Storage Device(s) found
** Block device usb 0 not supported

bodhi:

Looks like I've developed a different issue altogether - power supply failed for some reason. Gotta look into that before I can go any further, maybe a week or two when time available. Shouldnt be a biggie, pretty simple supply.

Thanks, will be back shortly. . .

Hi, bodhi

Pogo power supply back up, continuing your instructions. Your post (8 Sep 2017) re installing new rootfs seemed to go OK until (forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096) Note 1 -- was unable to remove
rm /etc/ssh/ssh_host*
rm: cannot remove '/etc/ssh/ssh_host*': No such file or directory
Did not go any further

Also, what should I expect to see? Last line (serial console) . . . XCE: XCE: LED -> DISCONNECTED
and the LED is orange.

As usual, thanks!

All this above means you are not running the new rootfs, it was booted into stock OS.

Please post the serial console log.

USB drive was plugged in; will install rootfs on a different one

The Formatted Code button is the right most icon right above the text box where you typing in the post (the left most is B for bold text, the next one to B is I for italic, next one to I is U for underline).

Select the text, and click on the Formatted Code button.
