Squeeze install boot problem
August 17, 2010 01:54PM
Hi,

I first made a Lenny install which worked fine (except the boot alternate discussed on other posts) then tried to reinstall with the squeeze release.

The install process seems to complete without any error but I'm not able to boot on this system. When rebooting from pogoplug, the usb stick gets initialized but the boot process seems to stop.

When mounting the usb stick manually under pogoplug, i can see a file tree that seems correct:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 bin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 boot
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 dev
drwxr-xr-x 41 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 etc
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 6 2010 home
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Aug 17 2010 initrd.img -> boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-kirkwood
drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 8192 Aug 17 2010 lib
drwx------ 2 root root 16384 Aug 17 2010 lost+found
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 media
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 6 2010 mnt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 opt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 6 2010 proc
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 root
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 sbin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 21 2010 selinux
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 srv
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 4 2010 sys
drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 tmp
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 usr
drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 4096 Aug 17 2010 var
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Aug 17 2010 vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-kirkwood

/boot is populated with kernels and initrd:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1001526 Jul 24 2010 System.map-2.6.32-5-kirkwood
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 84154 Jul 24 2010 config-2.6.32-5-kirkwood
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4703301 Aug 17 2010 initrd.img-2.6.32-5-kirkwood
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1432436 Aug 17 2010 uImage
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4703365 Aug 17 2010 uInitrd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1432372 Jul 24 2010 vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-kirkwood

I've noticed a different /etc/fstab with this release but maybe this is not related.
Squeeze:
/dev/root / ext2 noatime 0 1
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0

Lenny
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
/dev/sda1 / ext2 errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0

Any idea ?

Hi again,

Please ignore the previous post, I've noticed that my usb stick partition scheme was not correct. Sorry for that !

I'll keep the thread posted as i've started a new install, lets see if it will solve my problem.

After fixing my usb strick partition and a new install, I'm still not able to boot with Squeeze.

Hi,

Trying my 10th install ;-)

I've noticed that fw_set_env thrown an error like 'cannot parse no such file or directory'. pparently it was looking for fw_env.config file located in /usr/bin.

I just launched an intall from this directory (Pogoplug:/usr/bin$ /tmp/dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh)

When intalling UBoot I had the following errors :
# Verifying uBoot environment

# uBoot installation has completed successfully.

Then the 'debbootstrap' started normaly.

Then another error at the very end

Then nothing better after reboot.

Does anyone manage to sucessfully install Lenny but not Squeeze ? Did I missed something.

Regards
sylbal

Hi again,

All solved, I figured that my problem was related to an old /usr/bin/fw_printenv version (all commented in the uBoot section of the forum).

Sorry for noob monologue ;-) and Thank's to Jeff for his work !
Cheers,
