Check at serial console. Interrupt u-boot and
printenv

You might need to post some more info so that I can show you how to set up fw_printenv in Debian. But serial console should list the envs the same way.

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?

iomega ez,

You are not done yet until you can boot with the rootfs label like this:

make_usb_bootargs=setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10

And the mtds are not visible in bootlog, so that bootargs_mtd variable seems to have problem. Please get the output of:

cat /proc/mtd
cat /etc/fw_env.config

so how should I change uboot ?

iomega ez,

> so how should I change uboot ?

Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'

and then
boot

If you can boot all the way into Debian just by doing the above then you can save envs (but don't try anything else). This is to prove that your rootfs was correctly created.

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?

Cool!

Now you can save it:

Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv make_usb_bootargs 'setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_mtd) $(bootargs_end) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'
saveenv

Re: Can install Bodhi's kernel on still 'unsupported' kirkwood device?
June 03, 2017 07:30PM
Regarding your mtdparts that have not been detected by the kernel. This was one of the reasons you could not use fw_printenv.

Try this,

Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv bootargs_mtd 'mtdparts=spi0.0:0x7e000@0(u-boot),0x1000@0x7f000(env),0x1000@0x7e000(env2)'
boot

Please post the entire serial boot log here.

So now SPI is working and MTD is working. But the definition seems wrong.

[ 1.598138] 3 cmdlinepart partitions found on MTD device spi0.0

[ 1.642221] mtd: partition "env2" doesn't start on an erase block boundary -- force read-only

You need to:

1. Look for the correct MTD definition (search here and NAS Central).
2. Look for the correct /etc/fw_env.config for this box.

should I boot with old kernel on debian 6?
First, you are probably better off with a DTB that supports this device. There is no absolute guarantee that the DTB for the IX2-ng has all the bits and pieces in the correct place. That said, most of these devices are pretty close to being the same.

The MTD has sector misaligned problems even on the IX2-ng. This is because Linux does not know about the actual SPI flash chip in the device. Linux has picked the flash geometry for the closest SPI flash device that it knows about. The actual flash chip in the device can erase to page boundaries that the stock Linux driver just cannot use. Uboot knows about the page boundaries and sets up the Uboot environment to those boundaries but Linux chokes.

You would need to edit the Linux m25p80 flash driver to correct the problem.
I need to point out that the MTD sector misaligned problem is documented in the kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-ng.dts file. If your device has the same SPI flash chip, you will have the same problem. If your device has a different SPI flash chip, you need a DTB/DTS file that supports the hardware in your device.
as far as I know, they use the same board. but EZ boark have only 1 sata port and 128MB memory on board.

same board but less parts.

Since you have serial console, and can set the envs there, no need to worry about the MTD. As long as other aspects of this box are working then it is fine. You can remove the mtdparts from bootargs.

iomega_ez,

> is this why I have wrong MTD?

Not really. What you have

mtdparts=spi0.0:0x7e000@0(u-boot),0x1000@0x7f000(env),0x1000@0x7e000(env2)

is the same as in the DTS.

Regardless, the mtdparts in bootargs takes precedent. So it is fine.

The error Indicated that the flash sector boundary is not 0x1000 (4K).

[ 1.593304] m25p80 spi0.0: mx25l8005 (1024 Kbytes)

[ 1.642221] mtd: partition "env2" doesn't start on an erase block boundary -- force read-only

So the only explanation for this error is the flash sectore boundary is 0x10000 (64K). But your stock boot log says it is 4K.

SPI Serial flash detected @ 0xf4000000, 1024KB (256sec x 4KB)

So the DTS needs to be defined differently for this box to match the one that u-boot already knows about (4K).
.

Please post what you know about the SPI flash type (probably from GPL or webistes such as NASCentral), and also post the DTS that you are using.

Just changing the DTS won't help the fact that Linux does not know about that flash chip. It would require patching the SPI flash driver to recognize the chip correctly.

You can, however, get the U-Boot environment to appear correctly in Linux. It will be in read-only mode because Linux can't erase/program to the 4K sector boundaries of the U-Boot environment.

In Debian, you need to install "u-boot-tools" package. Then put this in a configuration file named "/etc/fw_env.config". You will have to be "root" to do these things.

# device Offset Size Sector size
/dev/mtd2 0x7e000 0x1000 0x1000
/dev/mtd1 0x7f000 0x1000 0x1000

This will describe where the U-Boot environment(s) are to the U-Boot tools. Now you should be able to use the "fw_printenv" command. You will have to be "root" or you will have to change the permissions on the "/dev/mtd" devices to use the fw_printenv command.

True, there are 2 parts: DTS and dirver. If the flash type appear on the list, then it's easier. If it is not, then some change in the driver is needed, and it might be quite simple, might be not.

All these are in the rootfs Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

I installed omv3.0 on iomega ez.

it works fine except network speed is reduced to
samba 20MB/s
ftp 30MB/s

normally I get 50MB/s.

but I don't know why???
old kernel on debin wheezy

is it something wrong with new kernel? or jus omv?

Re: Debian on Iomega EZ Media & Backup Center

Hi I am trying to install Debian on a Iomega’s Ez Media & Backup Center

I have a 6Tb empty Hardrive ready to make some test,
I have serial-ttl cable, and pin of ttl identified on the board.
I have a ready to use debian VM and connected a USB to Sata Cable that I was able to use with another 6Tb HardDrive to flash a WDMyBookLive-Single with LEDE and It worked perfectly.

I have asked for help in LEDE forums and one user prepared to me a file with LEDE but it is not uImage formatted: https://forum.lede-project.org/t/lenovo-iomega-ez-media-backup-center/5031

I want to try to install LEDE or Debian.

Thanks.

braian87b,

Create the USB rootfs using Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (24 Jul 2017).
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

And use the kirkwood-lenovo-iomega-ez.dtb from this post:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,15887,36138#msg-36138

If you have serial console, then try what iomega_ez did to set up booting the new USB rootfs:

The Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 with the kirkwood-lenovo-iomega-ez.dtb still shows
[ 7.781037] mtd: partition "u-boot" doesn't end on an erase/write block -- force read-only
[ 7.796000] mtd: partition "u-boot env2" doesn't start on an erase/write block boundary -- force read-only
[ 7.812164] mtd: partition "u-boot env" doesn't start on an erase/write block boundary -- force read-only

I found that
$ cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 0007e000 00010000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00001000 00010000 "u-boot env2"
mtd2: 00001000 00010000 "u-boot env"

while stock firmware has 0x00001000 erasesize.
$ cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 0007e000 00001000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00001000 00001000 "env"
mtd2: 00001000 00001000 "env2"

How can I correct this?

jeon,

With Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs, get these info:

dmesg
fw_printenv
cat /proc/mtd

If you have stock u-boot envs and bootlog, please post here also.

It seems there is a mismatch somewhere in your u-boot envs, and how the kernel detect the SPI chip.
