:) This box has the same SoC as the Dell Wyse T50.

What we don't have yet for this box is GPL for u-boot and kernel. I'm looking for GPIO info. And see if it will be possible to create new u-boot for this.

And I think your experience will be needed to figure out the graphics capability in this box.

My unit arrives later this week but it seems like I've missed most of the fun :-)

Not really :) Since I had a chance to look at the Marvell Dove SoC for the Wyse T50, this box became quite easy!

I think you and Gravelrash will figure out the Display part. I'll will see if I can activate the LCD devices 0 and 1. We have not seen it in dmesg yet, so that's something to shoot for this box and the Wyse T50.

I have a contact inside a division of HP - ill see what i can find out in relation to " GPL for u-boot and kernel"

Not going to hold my breath as my experience of large organisations is that the right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing!

I don't have time to look at this now, but if you want the u-boot source it can be found at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/tcdebian/pool/thinpro40/source/uboot-t5335z.tgz. There may be other interesting source files located in that same directory. Good news is it seems to be based on a more modern u-boot 2009.08.

That's ancient :) even older than some Kirkwood boxes.

Does that give you what you need though in terms of source code to build a new uboot? and or get pointers towards graphics?

Unit arrived. Ssh in stock is disabled so will need to hook up a monitor and keyboard. Lots of dust inside making it hard to decipher chip numbers at the moment. Will have a closer look this evening.

Yes, even though this u-boot is old (the design is the same as typical pogoplugs and other NAS stock u-boot circa 2010), the information can be extracted and merge into new u-boot.

Graphics is another story. We know which driver this stock kernel uses: dovefb. However, Armada DRM driver has been in mainline since in kernel 3.13.

Quote

Support the "LCD" controllers found on the Marvell Armada 510 devices. There are two controllers on the device, each controller supports graphics and video overlays.

This driver provides no built-in acceleration; acceleration is performed by other IP found on the SoC. This driver provides kernel mode setting and buffer management to userspace.

So I hope we can just ignore the old dovefb and move on to the Armada DRM driver in mainline.

In the new kernel linux-4.18.5-mvebu-tld-1, I've configured the Armada DRM as a module. As long as the module is loaded during boot, we are OK on the kernel side. However, the LCD devices were not activated yet.

This instruction has been updated to reflect the latest kernel and rootfs.

================

Here is how to boot Debian on the HP T5335z.

1. On another Linux box. Download Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 from the release thread, create the USB rootfs (or use your existing MVEBU rootfs if you have one before for other boxes).

2. Create uImage with DTB appended (assuming the USB drive is mounted at /media/rootfs).

cd /media/rootfs/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/dove-hp-t5335z.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.bak
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

3. Boot

a. Unmount and remove the USB drive and attach it to the T5335z.
b. Power up and interrupt serial console.

setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2000000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x3000000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd_exec 'run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x2000000 0x3000000'
run bootcmd_exec

4. (Deprecated).

5. To make it permannently boot into Debian rootfs on USB, and boot to stock OS when the USB rootfs is not attached:

fw_setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
fw_setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2000000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x3000000 /boot/uInitrd'
fw_setenv bootcmd_exec 'run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x2000000 0x3000000'
fw_setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_exec; run thinpro'

Hi,

I've logged into stock OS and extracted some info. Not sure if it is useful since bodhi already has Debian working however I may as well put it here as a reference. There is no ssh on the device so all commands have been executed locally and the output saved in text files on a USB drive.

Thanks Koen! very useful info to cross refererence with GPL. Now I might not need to boot stock to find stuff :)

Hi bodhi,

the post from Rayknight points to the HP ftp server. The following file may be of interest to you since it seems to contain the patches of the stock kernel.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/tcdebian/pool/thinpro42/source/linux-2.6.32.9_patches.tar.gz

There also is a different more recent uboot archive file in the same folder:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/tcdebian/pool/thinpro42/source/u-boot-2010.06-psp04.04.00.01.tar.bz2

Thanks Ray! That was very useful.

As usual when looking at GPL code, I want to curse :) even with open source, they made life a little harder for us (to have to decipher a few things before understanding why a bit is set and what it does).

That's actually the u-boot source for the HP t410 which uses a TI ARM chip similar to the Beaglebone.

@Koen

can you extract the following file and post here for safe keeping

"/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

there look to be a few static linked modules as well as kernel modules we MAY be able to nab.
Re: Debian on HP Thin Client T5335z

@bodhi - Im "brain farting" as i have 5 minutes spare at my desk

i think we will need to have this module generated when you do your run time build "fbdevhw"

also if i remember correctly we added fbcon to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules initialise the console output. so we should look there to enable console outputs etc

The graphics in xorg seem to driven by xf86-video-armada http://git.arm.linux.org.uk/cgit/xf86-video-armada.git/tree/README?h=unstable-devel
and this supports the following
Freescale i.MX
Marvell Armada 510 (Dove)
and GPU drivers:
Vivante libGAL (Armada only)
Etnaviv (Armada and i.MX) with galcore kernel driver
Etnaviv (Armada and i.MX) with etnaviv DRM kernel driver

So I wonder if anyone on here would be able to take up a conversation with the chaps over at LAKKA http://www.lakka.tv/get/linux/ as they have a Cubox system running already utilising the iMX chip and i believe the marvel graphics driver

Edit : added link to same chip as the one used over at Archlinuxarm
https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7/marvell/cubox

GPIO button

There is a "USB-recover" button. This button will trigger the USB recovery during stock u-boot booting.

Do we know where is this button? the only one that I can see outside the case is the Power button.

I'll do that on Monday when I'm back home.

@bodhi

I think I saw a small metal square with a white button on the board but can't remember where. Will have another look on Monday if nobody else has found it before then.

I've uploaded new DTB and DTS in this instruction:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,66989,67269#msg-67269

This now has power off working properly.

@bodhi I mixed up different thin clients. couldn't find a button in the HP T5335Z. I did buy what looked like another Dell Wyse T10 from ebay but it was a TX0D and that has a button on the board (and uses a different CPU than the T10 / T50)

@Gravelrash below some files which may provide useful info to get graphics working.
